THIS YEAR IN KONA
It was an Australian sweep at this year’s Ford Ironman World Championship when Chris “Macca”
McCormack and Mirinda Carfrae claimed titles in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i. McCormack, who won the
event in 2007, added a second World Championship title to his resume by finishing in 8:10:37, the
fifth-fastest men’s winning time in Kona. Carfrae secured her first-ever Ironman title when she
crossed the line in 8:58:36, the fourth-fastest women’s time in the history of the race.
Last year, Chrissie Wellington broke Paula Newby-Fraser’s long-standing overall course record
when she crossed the line in 8:54:02. This year, it was Karin Thuerig’s (SUI) 4:48:22 bike time that
overtook the Queen of Kona‘s 1993 bike-course record by eight seconds. Carfrae broke her own
run-course record, set in 2009, by running a 2:53:32 marathon. The race was a fast one for the
age groupers, as four men’s and five women’s division records were broken.
