FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER OF PRESBYTERIAN LADIES' COLLEGE, SYDNEY Thursday 18 October 2012 Issue 15, 2012
From the Principal
All of us who read the occasional corporate mission statements or promotional material know
that ‘excellence’ is a much utilised word.
In relation to motor vehicles and communications technology it often implies a continual state of
near perfection, a machine that is sleek and finely-tuned.
In schools we use the word frequently. Yet, when we apply it to the education of a choosing,
feeling, thinking young person it needs to carry a range of inferences. I believe the PLC Sydney
musical The Wizard of Oz was excellent. The performances were stunning, the direction of the
cast was intelligent, and the music and set were both created with a high degree of
professionalism. There was definitely a ‘fine-tuning’ of the performances, an attention to detail.
Yet it wasn’t a machine. Each student had to balance her commitment to the production
alongside her school work and other activities. There were challenges to face and people
sometimes were upset. There was a lot of human support from staff, parents and the cast that
brought about the final result. And after the lights dimmed for the final time, we clapped the
excellent performances, but those of us who were close to the behind the scenes action,
realised that there was another form of excellence working itself out: there were many young women who had grown
and matured through the struggle and hard work, through the conflicting emotions, and through the times when they
would either take the initiative or permit someone else to lead them.
Equally I think of the recent 1-0 win over Pymble Ladies College in the grand final of 1A Division by our First Hockey
XI. Here were young women playing at the highest level in the state in their chosen sport, and they proved
themselves to be a resilient, athletic and skilful team. They are an ‘excellent’ team. And, on the day, they scored the
critical goal and they won the cup. It too, however, was a human affair. They doubted themselves when they lost to
Pymble in the round robin and they required both rigorous drills and a clear strategy.
Those of you involved with PLC Sydney’s achievements in winning the IGSSA Swimming in NSW or the IGSSA
Speech and Drama, or in numerous other individual or team achievements, could continue the narrative. Excellence
in schools is both the great performance based on structure and the commitment to fine-tuning, and the intangibles of
heart and doubt and emotion that get us there.
One of the issues that exercises the minds of staff at PLC Sydney is how we continue to develop excellence in the
girls and young women in the day-to-day academic life of the College. Excellence can be measured by performance
in a summative assessment such as the HSC. Another indicator is the student’s commitment to the ‘struggle’ of
learning. Students don’t just need to seek to ‘do’ the work, they need to understand it. The person who has ‘mastered’
a subject is making evaluations and synthesising information rather than just recalling or using knowledge. The
learning becomes part of the learner. They have experiences that enable them to develop confidence.
Of course, even students who have achieved First Class Honours at University are still at the beginning of this
process. A partner in a very successful Sydney law firm said to me recently that even the most gifted recent law
graduate knows very little when they commence work. What they do have is the belief and capacity to learn how to
do it.
In developing the plan for the school in the years ahead we make choices that enable us to educate young women
well. These include staff appointments and curriculum choices.
It is thus a pleasure to inform you that our Head of English, commencing 2013, will be Dr Elizabeth Guy. Dr Guy has
been the Head of English at SCEGS Redlands, and in Executive roles at Emmanuel College and Wenona. She is a
very experienced and able educator who is spoken of very highly by her students, her colleagues, and by the parents
she has served. She has strong experience as a Senior Marker in HSC English and has served on the Examination
Committee for the Board of Studies. Dr Guy has many published papers on both Australian and global literature.
Having worked at the University of Sydney, the University of Scotland, the University of the South Pacific and at
Santiago College, Chile prior to her appointment at SCEGS Redlands, she brings a rich understanding of how people
from different backgrounds create literature to communicate about our world. She holds a Teaching for
Understanding Certificate from Harvard University and a Gifted Education Certificate from UNSW. English is a critical
subject for any school and I believe Dr Guy will bring clear leadership, a strong understanding of how students learn,
a rich tapestry of literature and language, and some real pizazz to the study of English at PLC Sydney.
In regard to curriculum choices, in 2013 you will notice some changes. The 2012 initiative in Science in the Junior
School will continue, and we will add the next step. On the subject selection evening in 2013, students in Year 8 will
be able to select an extension science course as an elective. This Cambridge University IGCSE course will broaden
and deepen their knowledge of Physics and Chemstry in particular.
Also at the 2013 subject selection evening, the Cambridge Global Perspectives course will be offered to Year 8 for
study in 2014. This dynamic course will enable our students to link up with students around the world in seeking to
find solutions to global issues.
There are other initiatives, but I will mention only one more now. David Hastie has the task in 2013 of leading the
development of a Theology and Philosophy elective for Years 9 and 10, as an introduction to the Pre-University
course from Cambridge of the same name.
Thus, in science, global issues and theology and philosophy our current Year 7 cohort will be given some real
opportunities to develop their thinking and their depth of understanding.
In a technologically savvy world, if we want excellence, we must build depth as well as breadth.
Speech Night 2012
Dear Parents,
I advised you in an earlier edition of Connections and by mail that we will have a Speech 'Night' this year at the Sydney
Opera House. This is due to their renovations.
I am pleased to be able to update you on progress we have made in our discussions with the Opera House.
Firstly, we have been concerned about the late start time for our younger students. I am pleased to report that we have been
successful in arranging earlier access to the venue. Speech Night will therefore now commence at 7 pm.
Secondly, The Opera House has now confirmed with us a return to a Speech 'Day' in 2013. There are advantages to
evening activities, but holding the event in the day time is a much better option for our Junior School students.
2012 Literary Tour
WESTMINSTER, WORDSWORTH AND WALKING: STUDENTS EXPLORE ENGLISH WRITERS
AND HISTORY
In the recent school holidays 32 students and four teachers embarked
on PLC's inaugural Literary Tour of England. Their quest: to discover
which words remain with us throughout history and why.
During the two-week tour, the group visited the homes and places of
inspiration of some of England's most famous writers and poets such
as Jane Austen and John Keats as well as several of Britain's
well-known sights, including Westminster Palace, Warwick Castle
and the picturesque Lakes District.
John Keats, a mere 25 years of age when he died, had requested the
following words on his head stone: "Here lies One Whose Name was
writ in Water, Feb 24 th 1821". Keats could not have been more incorrect.
His poetry remains with us today and continues to inspire.
Dorothy Wordsworth wrote in her diary each day, like so many of the
students who came on the tour. Today, extracts are painted in oils on
stones which are placed around what was once her garden. Her words
too have become permanent.
What is it that makes these words last through time Virginia Woolf, in
A Room of One’s Own, refers repeatedly to Shakespeare’s ‘incandescence’. Stephen Greenblatt, in Will in the World, describes Shakespe
describes Shakespeare’s writing as ‘luminous’. Is that it If the words resonate with the audience and lead us to believe that
through this resonance is the path to ‘enlightenment’ then we desire to preserve and revisit them again and again
One only needs to visit Wordsworth’s garden at Rydal Mount to feel the power of nature and to feel the connection to it
when you listen to his poetry.
The tour actually felt that power of connection when, on our final day, our guide took us along the Rydal Lake walk up into
the huge cave at the top. There, Stephanie Bell from Armidale led us in singing 'Advance Australia Fair'. The fresh clean air,
the fabulous singing which rang throughout the cave, and the connection we all felt – both with nature and each other – will
stay with us forever.
Classical Languages Drama Festival
Sporting Success
Contrary to popular belief, Latin is well and truly alive as a language, as
seen on 12 October, when Year 9 and incoming Year 12 Latinists were
privileged to be able to attend the professional musical production of Cupid
and Psyche. It was performed entirely in Latin and Ancient Greek by
students from 10 Sydney high schools with opera-esque surtitles above
the stage.
The music, acting and set were exceptional, and the experience of a live
classical performance will be unforgettable for everyone who attended,
including the Governer of NSW. The Classical Languages Teachers
Association (CLTA) was behind this production, and hired in a
professional artistic director from overseas.
The story was adapted from Metamorphoses, a novel by Apuleius, with
insertions from various other Latin and Greek authors. We are very
fortunate to have attended as there is only one production every ten years!
HOCKEY
PLC Sydney had a phenomenal IGSSA Hockey season. It may not be the biggest sport in the school, but what it lacks in
size, it definitely makes up for in spirit. Seven teams representated PLC Sydney on Saturday mornings with three teams
making it into the semi-finals. Two of these teams went on to the finals. What really stood out during the season was the
genuine enjoyment of the game, clearly visible at training sessions and in games, by all teams. The PLC Sydney parents on
the sideline also appeared to get caught up in the infectious enthusiasm. This, combined with excellent coaches, resulted in
skill development, a clearer understanding of the game of hockey and passion.
The 'pièce de résistance' of the hockey season was the PLC Sydney firsts and seconds making it into the finals. Both games
were held on the Olympic pitch at Homebush. The seconds went down in a tight game against Pymble 3, 2–1. Kate
Haldane scored in the last minute of the game, which was a fantastic way to end the season.
The game of the morning, I think it is fair to say, was the almighty clash between PLC Sydney 1 and Pymble 1 in the top
division S1 (1A). The quality of the skill displayed by both teams was simply amazing with many spectators commenting that
they couldn’t believe that this was ‘school girl’ hockey. Caitlin Lawrence scored in the first half and PLC Sydney never
looked back. They girls went about their business with a controlled confidence. The level of team work and skill execution
was second to none. Congratulations to all members of the PLS 1 team and their coaches, Stephan Madyki and Lee
Capes. Taking out the top grade has been a goal for the last 12 years. It goes to prove that goals are worth pursuing.
PLC Public Speaking Challenge Finals
Last term 21 of our best speakers in the Senior School competed for the
title of PLC's Junior and Senior Public Speaker of 2012. This is a
knock-out competition with girls from Years 7 to 11 participating.
The audience was captivated by the poise and charm of the speakers.
The three adjudicators said they were very impressed by the diverse
response to the topics given and even more so by the confidence
demonstrated by the speakers.
Congratulations to all speakers who communicated so effectively and also
gave us food for thought with their insightful and persuasive speeches.
