I. Aim of the <strong>Program</strong><br />

The aim of this program is to develop competent family physicians capable of provid<strong>in</strong>g high<br />

quality patient-centered comprehensive medical care, cover<strong>in</strong>g the biopsychosocial aspect<br />

of their patients based on the best available medical evidence. Our tra<strong>in</strong>ees will learn to<br />

work <strong>in</strong> teams both as members and as leaders. They will share <strong>in</strong> community focused<br />

research and will be committed to life-long learn<strong>in</strong>g. They will also learn to apply appropriate<br />

ethical and professional standards <strong>in</strong> their day to day practice and <strong>in</strong> their relationships with<br />

their patients and colleagues.<br />

II. Intended Learn<strong>in</strong>g Outcomes of the <strong>Program</strong> (ILOs)<br />

A. Knowledge and Understand<strong>in</strong>g: By the end of the program the candidate should be<br />

able to:<br />

1) Def<strong>in</strong>e health, health spectrum and factors affect<strong>in</strong>g health.<br />

2) Identify the role of the family physician <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g comprehensive health care.<br />

3) Identify health needs and problems accord<strong>in</strong>g to the human life cycle.<br />

4) Identify the etiology, cl<strong>in</strong>ical manifestations, differential diagnosis, prevention and<br />

management of the common, important and emergency medical conditions affect<strong>in</strong>g all<br />

age groups <strong>in</strong> the Egyptian population accord<strong>in</strong>g to the best available evidence.<br />

5) Def<strong>in</strong>e epidemiological needs of the community<br />

6) Identify the basics of cl<strong>in</strong>ical epidemiology.<br />

7) Identify how the health care delivery system <strong>in</strong> Egypt operates as well as the medico<br />

legal legislations <strong>in</strong> Egypt.<br />

8) Identify the uses, effects, side effects and drug <strong>in</strong>teractions of common drugs <strong>in</strong> adults,<br />

pediatrics, geriatrics, and patients with liver or kidney diseases, pregnant and lactat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

females (essential drug list).<br />

9) Identify the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of medical ethics that guide the doctor-patient and the doctordoctor<br />

relationships at the different levels of health care services.<br />

10) List the basis of research, critical appraisal of researches and evidence based<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

11) Identify the etiology, cl<strong>in</strong>ical manifestations, differential diagnosis and management of<br />

the common drug and substance abuse problems as well as the management of their<br />

withdrawal symptoms.<br />

B. Intellectual Skills: By the end of the program the candidate should be able to:<br />

1) Integrate the <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation gathered from medical records, history, cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

and <strong>in</strong>vestigations to reach a proper diagnosis or a differential diagnosis.<br />

2) Appraise research articles critically.<br />

3) Interpret statistical results efficiently and apply the results <strong>in</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance improvement.<br />

4) Manage resources effectively (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g time).<br />

5) Conduct community needs assessments.<br />

C. Professional and Practical Skills: By the end of the program the candidate should be<br />

able to:<br />

1) Apply proper consultation through; medical records, history tak<strong>in</strong>g, cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

and selection of the proper <strong>in</strong>vestigations accord<strong>in</strong>g to the human life cycle to develop<br />

an appropriate patient centered management plan.<br />

2) Provide appropriate counsel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> health and disease.<br />

3) Manage acute emergency cases <strong>in</strong>itially, per<strong>for</strong>m fundamental life support measures<br />

when <strong>in</strong>dicated and per<strong>for</strong>m proper referral.<br />

4) Per<strong>for</strong>m rout<strong>in</strong>e procedures needed <strong>in</strong> family practice.<br />

5) Use drugs appropriately <strong>in</strong> a cost effective manner.<br />

6) Demonstrate the ability to communicate <strong>in</strong> multiple modalities with patients, their<br />

families, other health care providers and adm<strong>in</strong>istrators.<br />

7) Use the different models <strong>for</strong> behavioral modification and change <strong>for</strong> life style<br />

modification.<br />

8) Initiate, utilize and audit medical records to <strong>in</strong>sure appropriateness of cont<strong>in</strong>uity of care.<br />

IV. <strong>Program</strong> Admission Requirements<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Cairo University Bylaws <strong>for</strong> Post Graduate <strong>Program</strong>s (July<br />

2009), applicants should have MBBCh or equivalent degree. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Cairo University<br />

requirements, all applicants <strong>for</strong> postgraduate studies should fulfill prelim<strong>in</strong>ary courses on the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects; Medical statistics I – English language (Toefl or equivalent degree) –<br />

Computer skills (ICDL) or equivalent computer course offered by the medical education center<br />

(MEDC). Admission to the program is open dur<strong>in</strong>g July. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g prior to registration may be<br />

Residency Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Program</strong><br />

· Phase 1 Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the new Bylaws, July 2009 <strong>for</strong> post graduate programs, all the candidates<br />

should have cl<strong>in</strong>ical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> 18 months. In this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g phase the residents will<br />

rotate <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>e, the pediatrics, the emergency and the family medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

departments. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period the students will attend the compulsory first part<br />

courses and they will also complete the elective courses.<br />

· Phase 2 Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g:<br />

All candidates should have cl<strong>in</strong>ical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> 18 months. In this tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g phase the<br />

residents will rotate <strong>in</strong> the Gynecology & Obstetrics department, the surgery cl<strong>in</strong>ic, the<br />

dermatology cl<strong>in</strong>ic, the psychiatry cl<strong>in</strong>ics, the ENT cl<strong>in</strong>ic, the ophthalmology cl<strong>in</strong>ic, the<br />

family medic<strong>in</strong>e department and the emergency departments. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period the<br />

students will attend the compulsory courses of the second part and will participate <strong>in</strong><br />

the scientific activities of the department.<br />

<strong>Master</strong> Thesis:<br />

All master degree students should prepare a thesis <strong>in</strong> family medic<strong>in</strong>e. The research and<br />

ethical committee of the department must approve the protocol of the research. The thesis<br />

may <strong>in</strong>clude a review part and a research part. The thesis is supervised by one or more senior<br />

staff members and may <strong>in</strong>clude other specialties accord<strong>in</strong>g to the nature of the research. The<br />

thesis should be evaluated and approved by a committee of three professors <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g one of<br />

the supervisors and an external professor.<br />

Scientific Activities:<br />

The candidates should participate <strong>in</strong> the scientific activities of the department such as:<br />

· Sem<strong>in</strong>ars.<br />

· Journal clubs.<br />

· Scientific meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

· Workshops.<br />

· Conferences.<br />

· Thesis discussions.<br />

Each activity is monitored and given credit po<strong>in</strong>ts registered <strong>in</strong> a special section <strong>in</strong> the<br />

logbook. Candidates should collect the required po<strong>in</strong>ts be<strong>for</strong>e allowed to sit <strong>for</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exam.<br />

VI. Regulations <strong>for</strong> progression and program completion<br />

After f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g the first part of the residency tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, attend<strong>in</strong>g the specified courses and<br />

collect<strong>in</strong>g the required credit po<strong>in</strong>ts, the student should pass the first part exam<strong>in</strong>ation be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

proceed<strong>in</strong>g to the second part. In case the student fails to pass the exam<strong>in</strong>ation, he may<br />

proceed <strong>in</strong> the cl<strong>in</strong>ical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and can resubmit <strong>for</strong> the next exam<strong>in</strong>ation. After pass<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

first part, the student submits a protocol <strong>for</strong> master thesis at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the second part.<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e submitt<strong>in</strong>g to the f<strong>in</strong>al exam, he should f<strong>in</strong>ish the thesis and get approval, complete the<br />

second part of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program, and collect the required credit po<strong>in</strong>ts. The candidate will<br />

receive his degree after pass<strong>in</strong>g this f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ation. The <strong>Master</strong> degree should be obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

with<strong>in</strong> a maximum of 6 years after the registration date.<br />

VII. Assessment<br />

A: Assessment Tools<br />

· Supervision and Monitor<strong>in</strong>g of Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Program</strong><br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Cairo University Bylaws <strong>for</strong> practical Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Program</strong>s,<br />

professors carry cont<strong>in</strong>uous assessment dur<strong>in</strong>g the program. A practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program<br />

logbook will be kept <strong>for</strong> each candidate to document all his/her practical activities as well as<br />

his/her participation <strong>in</strong> different scientific activities. The head of the department should allow<br />

the candidates to undergo the f<strong>in</strong>al exam<strong>in</strong>ation when they complete their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program<br />

and collect the credit po<strong>in</strong>ts needed.<br />

· Formal Assessment<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g the Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Cairo University Bylaws <strong>for</strong> Post Graduate <strong>Program</strong>s<br />

(July 2009). Students should be assessed at the end of first part and of the second part.<br />

· Community Medic<strong>in</strong>e: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam<br />

· Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Pharmacology: 1 hour written exam<br />

· Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<br />

· Pediatrics: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Cl<strong>in</strong>ical exam<br />

· Medical Ethics: 1 hour written exam<br />

practical and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> separate days.<br />

2. Second Part F<strong>in</strong>al Exam:<br />

The written exam<strong>in</strong>ations will be held <strong>in</strong> seven days. This will be followed by the<br />

practical and oral exam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> separate days.<br />
