About the BasicsCard
The BasicsCard is a Personal Identification Number
(PIN) protected card that lets you spend your income
managed money at approved stores and businesses
using the EFTPOS system. The BasicsCard provides
you with greater choice and flexibility to purchase
essential goods and services from a broad range of
approved stores and businesses.
Do I have to use the BasicsCard
You do not have to use a BasicsCard to spend your
income managed money. While many customers
choose to use a BasicsCard, you can choose to
spend your income managed funds in a number of
other ways, such as direct deductions or one-off
payments to stores. When we talk with you about
Income Management we will work with you about
how you can spend your income managed money.
You can also get a new or replacement BasicsCard
at any time by contacting us.

You can use your BasicsCard at approved stores
and businesses that display this BasicsCard sticker.
To find approved BasicsCard stores and businesses
in your area:

What if a business doesn’t
accept the BasicsCard
If a store does not accept the BasicsCard, the
Department of Human Services may be able
organise for a payment to be made directly to the
store or business. Call the Income Management
Line on 132 594 for more information.
What can I buy using my
BasicsCard
You can use your BasicsCard to buy things you and
your family need such as food, clothes, health items,
hygiene products, whitegoods, furniture and fuel.
If the store or business accepts the BasicsCard, you
can buy anything at that store or business except
for the excluded goods and services.

What can’t I buy using my
BasicsCard
Your cannot use your BasicsCard for:
• buying alcohol, pornography, tobacco or tobacco
products, gambling products, gambling services,
home-brew kits or home-brew concentrate
• ‘cash-out’ from a store or ATM
• book up (a credit offered by stores for the
purchase of goods or services—often in remote
and regional areas of Australia), or
• gift cards or vouchers.

income managed money on your BasicsCard.
Money can be put on your BasicsCard every
fortnight when you get your Centrelink payments.

How much money can be put
on my BasicsCard
Your BasicsCard balance cannot be more than
$3,000. You can ask for a lower maximum card
balance if you prefer. Reducing your maximum
card balance may help you better manage your
money. Talk to us if you would like to reduce your
maximum card balance.
How much can I spend each day
You cannot spend more than $1500 in any one
day (midnight to midnight) using your BasicsCard.
Once you have spent you daily spending limit, your
BasicsCard will not work for the rest of that day
(up to midnight). You can ask for a lower maximum
daily spending limit if you prefer. Reducing your
daily spending limit may help you to better manage
your money. Talk to us if you would like to reduce
your maximum daily spending limit.
Can I use my BasicsCard if
I travel outside an Income
Management area
There are stores and businesses across Australia
where you can use your BasicsCard. Talk to
us before you travel so you know how you can
access your income managed money while you
are away. We can provide you with a list of stores
and businesses that accept the BasicsCard
closest to where you will be staying or you
can search for stores and businesses online at
humanservices.gov.au/basicscard
Remember to take your BasicsCard with you when
you travel.

Keeping your PIN safe
Your BasicsCard is protected with a four digit-PIN.
You will need to choose a PIN when you are issued
with your BasicsCard. You should choose a PIN
that you can remember and that would be difficult
for anyone else to guess. You must keep your PIN
secret and secure. This means:
• do not tell anyone else your PIN, including family
and friends
• do not write your PIN on your BasicsCard or on
anything carried with your BasicsCard
• do not let anyone else see your PIN when you
are using it, and
• do not let anyone else use your BasicsCard.
If someone has your BasicsCard and knows your
PIN, they could spend all of your money. If you
forget your PIN, call the Income Management Line
on 132 594.

What should I do if my
BasicsCard is lost, stolen
or damaged
You should call the Income Management Line on
132 594 as soon as possible. We will stop anyone
else from using your BasicsCard and will talk
to you about how to get access to your income
managed money until you get a new BasicsCard.
