Memories <strong>of</strong> an Isl<strong>and</strong> Capital,<br />
Kingstown, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong> & <strong>the</strong> <strong>Grenadines</strong><br />
A few years ago, well known <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong> Medical doctor, journalist <strong>and</strong><br />
artist, Dr. Vivian Child published a series <strong>of</strong> articles featuring interesting<br />
buildings <strong>and</strong> homes in <strong>and</strong> around Kingstown. She also made original<br />
sketches <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se buildings as <strong>the</strong>y were.<br />
The ravages <strong>of</strong> time, wea<strong>the</strong>r related disasters, fires <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> developer’s<br />
hammers have ei<strong>the</strong>r destroyed or modified many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se structures.<br />
They remain only in <strong>the</strong> memories <strong>of</strong> our elderly citizens or in very<br />
limited historical archives.<br />
Working with a publisher, Dr. Child made <strong>the</strong>se articles available, <strong>and</strong><br />
along with <strong>the</strong> original sketches <strong>and</strong> an introduction by Prime Minister,<br />
Hon. Ralph Gonsalves, <strong>the</strong>y were published in <strong>the</strong> book, “<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arches</strong>,<br />
Memories <strong>of</strong> an Isl<strong>and</strong> Capital”. The book was released during “Heritage<br />
Month”, this year.<br />
In “<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arches</strong>, Dr. Child has frozen moments in time, creating a<br />
permanent record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kingstown that was, along with interesting <strong>and</strong><br />
sometimes humorous anecdotes about <strong>the</strong> early owners <strong>and</strong> residents.<br />
“<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arches</strong>” is available worldwide in bookstores <strong>and</strong> over <strong>the</strong><br />
internet through Amazon.com . Ben Harrison, President <strong>of</strong> Cybercom<br />

had to say about <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arches</strong> in his introduction to <strong>the</strong> book:<br />
"<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arches</strong>", gives us an important historical perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital, past <strong>and</strong><br />
present. I recommend its reading by anyone interested in out multi-isl<strong>and</strong> nation.<br />
It will captivate our current citizens <strong>and</strong> residents as well as visitors <strong>and</strong> tourists<br />
who have been here or are planning a visit. For <strong>Vincent</strong>ians living throughout <strong>the</strong> world, it will bring<br />
back fond memories that might even encourage <strong>the</strong>m to return to <strong>the</strong>ir isl<strong>and</strong> home.<br />
