8 | February, 2013 Garfield County Innocent Until Proven Guilty
Don’t do the crime...
Enid police officers made an excon
cry during a drug arrest Jan.
27.
Just before 5 p.m. that day, officer
Aaron Barber said he saw two
suspicious men walking while on
patrol. He asked if he could talk to
them and both consented, he said.
When he started talking to
Cody Rogers, 28, Rogers immediately
became nervous and kept
his hands in his pockets. When
Barber asked Rogers to empty his ROGERS
pockets, the man pulled out a hypodermic
needle. Rogers, who was on the phone at the time, told
his friend, “Come get me, I am going to jail.”
When Rogers put down the phone, he moved the needle to his
other pocket and yelled, “This is a set up!” at Barber. The officer
told Rogers to stop resisting, but that only made Rogers angrier,
as he was yelling into the phone, “Come get me, I’m not going to
jail.”
When Rogers got handcuffed, he admitted having an open knife
in his right pocket and implied he intended to use it on the officer.
Sure enough, the knife was opened and locked when Barber
pulled it out of Rogers’s pocket.
At that point, Rogers said he didn’t want to go back to prison
and started to cry.
When Barber put Rogers in the patrol car, the suspect took his
cigarette pack from the trunk and tried to hide it. He also bit a
cellophane wrapper and hid it under his tongue. Realizing Rogers
was trying to swallow methamphetamine, Barber told him he
could possibly overdose. Not heeding the warning, Rogers swallowed
the drug and ended up in the hospital, despite his assurances
that it “won’t kill him.
At the hospital, officers learned Rogers relapsed on methamphetamine
and threatened to harm himself. Later, Rogers told
Barber to shoot him because he didn’t want to go back to prison.
Rogers’ rap sheet shows he spent two and a half years in prison
for a burglary conviction. He is also on probation for domestic
abuse and falsely declaring items at a pawn shop.
Rogers posted a $10,000 bond Feb. 1. He will next appear in
court at 1:15 p.m. Feb. 25.
