Early Christmas Edition75 CENTS Volume 122, No. 22 PLWAVE.COM WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2012 MIDWEEK EDITIONMayyour daysbe merryand bright!Photo by Phil Thomae10th annual Toy Run brings help to many local organizationsBy MELONY OVERTONPORT LAVACA WAVEJerry Karnes, of Houston, turned afailed attempt at a boat poker run intoa Toy Run that has spanned a decadewhere boaters deliver toys to the needychildren of Calhoun County eachChristmas.Karnes and 36 other boaters justcompleted the 10th annual Toy Run onDec. 1, traveling 72 miles one way fromFreeport to Port O’Connor to deliver$130,000 worth of toys to Calhounyouth.“We all leave from Freeport on thefirst Saturday of December,” Karnessaid.Departure is often slow going, hesaid.“The first year we were stoppedby the (U.S.) Coast Guard outside ofSergeant, because they saw us loadeddown with the toys in black garbagebags and they inspected us prettyclose,” he said.“When all of the snow hit at thebeginning of December one year, themorning we got down to Freeport togo, the prior evening it had snowedreal hard and the were boats covered inice. We had to chip off the ice before wecould get going,” Karnes said. “Otheryears, we had nasty, blowing rain andsleet. We’ve also had to tow boats thatbroke down.”The group travels down the Gulfand stops at Matagorda Harbor to havelunch, where the small boats take onfuel. From there, it goes on to PortO’Connor, making sure all the boatsgather with their flags flying, Karnessaid.“We let the Santas and elves put ontheir costumes to join in the lightedboat parade down the ICW,” he said.After the parade, the boats dock atthe Inn at Clark’s to unload the toys asvolunteers with Port O’Connor’s Adoptan Angel Program have trailers to loadthe toys. The toys are then taken to thePort O’Connor Community Center tobe sorted to ensure the right kind oftoy goes to the right child, Karnes said.Karnes recalls that the first toy runin 2002 consisted of a handful of boatswith enough toys to fill the fishingcenter in Port O’Connor.Although Karnes had the destinationnailed down for his original ideafor a boat poker run, his plans werethwarted by law enforcement.“The first year was going to be apoker run, not a toy run. We were goingto collect playing cards along the wayand the one with the best hand wouldwin the pot, and some law enforcementorganizations along the way said, ‘Ifyou do that, we will put you in jail.’ Iasked what can we do to take place ofthat and just have some fun,” he said.“I had been involved in a Harley toyrun, and I said, ‘Let’s do a boat toyrun.’ I had never heard of one before.The weather was really nasty the firstyear. We had 10 to 15 boats planning togo, but only seven showed up,” he said.Karnes said participation increasesevery year.“People in our area join us as soonas they learn about it. It may be the single largestlighted boat parade anywhere,” hesaid.With increased participation comemore gifts for the children.“This year, it took five 30-foot trailersto haul all of the toys to the communitycenter. We brought over 140 bikes. Halon wasdrafted into the U.S. Army,and his orders changed. Withoriginal orders to report to ElPaso, he was instead sent toJapan and then on to Korea,while the newly-married RoseMarie spent Christmas alone.“There was no one home forChristmas,” she said.Halon received his changein orders just a couple daysbefore the wedding. The twohad originally planned a Nov.28 wedding, but the plans hadto change. They moved the dateof the wedding to Dec. 1, the daybefore the Advent season wasset to begin.“El Paso sent him a notice thathe was going to be embarked,but they weren’t sure whatday in December,” Rose Mariesaid. “We couldn’t get marriedon the 28th for some reason.We got married on the 1st.They questioned the marriagebecause Advent was startingHighSchool DiplomaWELDINGJan. 16, 2013Financial AidAvailablethe 2nd. So it was a mess. Wedecided we were going to getmarried the 1st regardless.“We thought maybe he wasgoing to get stationed back inCalifornia, but his orders camein about two days before we gotmarried and he was going toJapan.”Halon arrived in Japan justin time for Christmas, whileRose Marie spent Christmas inYorktown. Halon spent about 18months overseas, not returninguntil April 1953. He spent partof that time in the Koreanconflict.“They flew him from the frontline. She said herwork in Victoria allowed herto keep busy and see militarywork up close.“I worked around militarypeople and I saw them come andgo,” she said. “At that time, thatAir Force base at Victoria wasthe jet Air Force base wherethey’d do touch landings. Itwas like I was in a family ofmilitary when I went to workthere. It eased my pain becauseI saw other people that had bigfamilies and it didn’t matterwhat you had, you were gone ifthey needed you.“It would have been bad if Ihadn’t had a job while he wasgone. The Lord blessed me withthat.”When Halon returned fromhis overseas stint in the Army,the couple moved back to PortLavaca in August 1953. Thefirst Christmas Rose Marie andHalon spent together was thatyear.“I was expecting our firstchild, and I had kidneyproblems. So that’s not good,”she said. “But he was homesafe.”The couple went on to have10 children. I havefished all over the world, but forsome reason, I like that sleepylittle village atmosphere theyhave,” he said.“It is not the county we areinterested in, it is the kids. The event will beheld at the Bauer Community CenterDec. 31 and starts at 6 p.m.“We used to do it years ago,” saidMark Daigle, president of the PortLavaca Noonday Lions Club. “Somany people every year ask if we’regoing to do it again and finally wedecided to pull it off again. It’s allcoming together and we plan onhaving a really great time with it.”The social portion of the eveningbegins at 6 p.m. and dinner is slated tobe served at 7 p.m. Following dinner,a dance will be held at 8 p.m. withmusic provided by “Night Moves.”Tickets for the event, a fundraiserfor the club, costs $150 per couple.“We’re going to have party favorsFollowThe Waveeveryday onFacebookandTwitterlike the hats and the noise makers andthose will be on all of the table. We’regoing to have a steak and shrimpdinner with all the refreshments.If you want to drink tea, Coca Cola,water or something stronger we’llhave it, and we’re going to have aChampagne fountain, the whole bit,and we’ll have a midnight toast. It’sgoing to be a lot of fun,” Daigle said.Also during the evening, prizes inthe form of Visa gift cards will begiven out. Daigle said only 300 ticketshave been printed and winners willbe drawn from those tickets.“The very first ticket drawn wins$150 and then every 10th ticket wins$100 up to the 270th ticket. The 270thticket wins $500. The 280th ticketwins $750. The 290th ticket wins$1,000 and the very last ticket drawnwins $5,000,” he said.With the exception of one luckyticket, all tickets will be entered intothe drawing.New Year’s EveExtravaganza schedule6 p.m. Social begins7 p.m. Dinner served8 p.m. to midnight Dance with music providedby “Night Moves”“We keep ticket number 13, luckynumber 13. We have that one and wehaven’t sold it. We’re going to sell299 tickets for people to get in andticket number 13 we’ll auction offthat night to the highest bidder andit goes back in the pot when there’s10 tickets left and they’ll have a shotat winning $1,000 or $5,000,” Daiglesaid. “Basically there’s going to be30 winners.”Daigle added that in this case,being the last person drawn is a goodthing.“Everyone always says ‘I’m the lastone drawn’ and that’s a good thinghere because the last one drawn wins$5,000,” he said.Daigle also expects there tobe a silent auction during theextravaganza.“There may be a silent auction. Ithink we have some silent auctionitems. We’re not for sure yet. We’replanning on having one if everythingcomes together but we’re going toplay it by ear,” he said. “If we do havethe items, we’ll have a silent auctiontable set up, depending on what wehave come in and what we get.”As of Thursday, Daigle said thatseveral tickets were left and theycould be purchased by contactingmembers of the Noonday Lions Club.Brother Gary Moses of Victoria isexpected emcee the event.He also said that attire for theevening is casual, but some peopleare also planning to dress up.“We want people to be comfortable,”Daigle said. “People have been tellingme it gives them an opportunity todress up to the nines and I’ve hadpeople tell me they’re going to showup in flip flops. We kind of want toleave it up to them, however they feelcomfortable.”Above all, the event is a fundraiserto help the Lions Club fulfill itsmission to serve the community.“First and foremost, it’s afundraiser for all of our projects. Wehave ongoing projects year round,”Daigle said. “We have the Sight Firstprogram. We have leader dogs thatwe provide to visually impairedpeople. We do the school kids thatcan’t afford glasses, we purchasetheir glasses for them here locally.”The organization also raisesscholarship funds for students atCalhoun High School.“We give local scholarships tothe high school kids. We have a lotof different projects and this wasalways our bigger money maker andit’s easier for us than selling sausagewraps at every event. Have one eventthat can really hold us through theyear and then do the smaller ones, aswe need. We have an opportunity todo really well at this event and havea really good time,” he said.If all goes well at the event, Daiglesaid they plan to hold the eventagain in the future, and hopes theevent encourages people to join theLions Club.“It is something we feel would begood, whether or not it’s on NewYear’s Eve, we used to kind of do itin August or September. We’re goingto look at it. We’re going to see howit works out. There wasn’t a lot tochoose from.The job of decorating thefour foot scraggle fell to mymom and sisters. Garlandrings were made with brightlycolored construction paper.Painted popsicle sticks, glueand tons of glitter were theingredients for handmadeornaments to adorn the limbs.Later, mom and dad,grandma, Carolyn, Jim, Lindaand I gathered around thetree and each of us openedour present. Yes, present, andlistened as dad cracked hardribbon candy with his teethand told the tale of the MerryChristmas Orange.That was the prettiest treeI’ve ever seen — despite itsshortcomings — and one ofthe best Christmases ever.I thought back on thatsimpler time this week as Iscrambled to get ready for thisholiday season.Every year since I’vebeen an adult has been achoreographed Christmasproduction. The tree ishuge, expensive ornaments,lights everywhere, shopping,shopping, shopping, wrappinga ton of presents that circlethree feet from the tree. Andyes, it’s beautiful. But is itprettier than the CharlieBrown tree we had a halfcentury ago? And doeseveryone need five presents?No.Remember what this seasonis all about. It’s made for any kind ofdisaster, whether it be natural,man-made or the apocalypse. Imade them so nice that they’relike a trailer house. It’s justlike that except they’re 20 feetunder ground. They stay niceand cool during the summerbecause you have all the earthon top of you,” Hubbard said.On the show, Hubbard isexpected to showcase a shelterhe built in the Victoria area fora customer from Florida.“I built a shelter for a guyin Florida and we actuallyinstalled it near Victoria,” hesaid. “The shelter is a 10 x 50home. It has a master bedroomand it has a den and big screenTV and a leather couch. It sleeps10. I’ve been using it as kind ofthe display shelter because somany people worked on it.”The idea to buildunderground shelters came toHubbard when he was in searchof purchasing one. A friendof his text messaged him oneday advising him to look intosomeone who made the type ofshelter he was looking for.Hubbard said all the shelterslooked too much like plainbomb shelter, so with thehelp of Ken Lester of LesterContracting, Inc., Hubbardwent to work to install hisown shelter in an undisclosedlocation near Victoria.“I went and looked at it andI thought it was pretty cool.It was like four years ago. Ithought ‘I’ll just build onemyself just for the fun of it,’because I had the machinery. Igot really creative,” Hubbardsaid.Calhoun County native Ronal Hubbard founded his business,Atlas Survival Shelters, and manufactures underground allhazardshelters that will be featured on National Geographic’s“Doomsday Preppers” on Jan. 8. Once purchased, alarge hole is dug and the sheltersystem is placed inside andthen covered back up with dirt.Unique to Hubbard’s sheltersis the feel inside of them, hesaid. A hunter himself, headded that hunting cabins werethe inspiration for the interiordesign.“I know they’re a bombshelter, but they’re fun. They’recool. It’s like a boy toy. It’s likea man cave,” he said. “Kidslove them. Everyone is alwayslaughing and happy. No one’sfrowning in my shelters. Itmakes people happy. Theythink they’re fun.”Not only are they fun, he said,but they also have practicalapplications as well. Theshelters feature convenientstorage areas under the bunkbeds and the floor. They alsofeature an air filtration systemfrom Switzerland.Hubbard, who plans toeventually expand his businessoverseas, said that the shelterswill protect against nuclearfallout, biological warfare andchemical attacks. He said theyalso have an escape hatch thatcan be concealed by secret treesor rocks.“They have an air systemcalled an NBC, nuclearbiological chemical airfiltration system, and they’vegot a main hatch and thenthere’s a secret tunnel thatcomes out the back end incase you get trapped. It’s asecret tunnel that comes outand comes up under ground,”Hubbard said. “It also has aFeatured on several national television programs, Ronal Hubbard’s underground shelters are madefrom galvanized corrugated pipe and have several features including a living room complete withamenities. (Contributed photo)mudroom so when you comedown there’s a mudroom andthen there’s a door and it locksairtight, too.”The shelters also feature afull-sized bathroom and kitchenand the shelter uses solarpanels to generate electricity.“The bathroom has a marinegradetoilet so it pumps up tothe septic tank,” Hubbard said.Hubbard said his businessfeatures 14 different modelsthat range from $8,000 to $86,000in cost.Of his customers so far,Hubbard said the main reasonpeople install the shelters hadless to do with them being endof-the-worldshelters and moreof a long-term investment.“I make an undergroundhunting cabin that just sohappens be bomb proof. Peoplethat buy my shelters are buyingthem for long-term investmentsnot just for one event. I don’tthink I’ve had one person cometo me and say ‘I’m buying theshelter because I think theworld is going to end,’” he said.While he said he did not buyinto the myths regarding Dec.21 being the end of the world,he said he does believe in somethings he said are scientificfacts regarding the “galacticplain.”“I never thought (the world)was going to end. I didn’tbelieve it.
