Good Advice
Cosmetic Surgery With a Personal Touch
Although recent enhancements in technology have helped
make plastic surgery procedures safer, more natural and easier
for the patient, the multitude of procedures and doctors available
can make the decision to proceed with surgery complex and
confusing. It is most important to find the right surgeon, one
who will guide and advise you in choosing the best and appropriate
procedures, addressing each person’s unique
requirements, goals and objectives. The development of
an overall plan, inclusive of diet and exercise helps to
achieve both a natural look and comfortable feeling. This
comprehensive assessment of a person’s needs and
determination of what areas of the body could most benefit,
allows people to achieve a positive and realistic result as well
as a natural and younger look. It is often a combination of
services that produces the best result, often including breast
augmentation, breast lifts or breast reductions, with the
appropriate procedure determined by each individual’s body.
Working with a patient to define their needs, ensures a result
that is beautiful and natural looking.
Injectables are quite effective in supplementing the surgical procedures as they
are proven to reduce lines and wrinkles on the face, without surgery. Botox and
other dermal fillers are continuing to grow in popularity. As recently reported
by the Aesthetic Surgery Education & Research Foundation (ASERF), not only is
the use of these products growing, but the willingness of people to discuss their
treatments with others is also growing. Survey results found that the typical
aesthetic injectable patient is a married, working mother between 41-55 years
of age with a household income of under $100,000. In addition, women
It is most important to find
the right surgeon, one who
will guide and advise you
in choosing the best and
appropriate procedures,
addressing each person’s
unique requirements,
goals and objectives.
receiving aesthetic injectable treatments are health-conscious and philanthropy
minded, with the great majority incorporating exercise and healthy eating habits
into their lives. In addition, nearly seven out of 10 respondents believe that
BOTOX® Cosmetic and other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are important parts
of their aesthetic routine. Additionally, and also effective in achieving a younger
and fresher look are other non-surgical alternatives including skin tightening
and laser hair removal. It is the proper mix of each of these
procedures that guarantees a successful improvement in
appearance, while removing the sign of aging.
The best candidates for plastic surgery are those who want
to look their best by improving upon their natural beauty,
while at the same time maintaining realistic expectations.
People should realize that while plastic surgery can significantly
improve their physical traits and self-image, surgery will not
necessarily change their lives or their relationships. Selecting
the best surgeon, determining the areas that you would like
to improve, asking many questions, combined with defining
the appropriate treatments should result in a better sense of self and an
improvement in both self-confidence and appearance.
Good Advice
Breast Surgery Combined with Tummy Tuck and/or Liposuction
by Charlotte Rhee, MD, F.A.C.S., P.C.
Many of my patients come to me seeking help with the changes that can occur
after childbirth. Following childbirth, a woman’s breast can grow to uncomfortable
proportions or just the opposite can happen. A woman’s breast can
actually lose volume and shrink, resulting in the breast appearing “deflated.”
Additionally, a large number of women come to me seeking help with the
post partum changes of their abdomen. During pregnancy the skin and abdominal
wall muscles are stretched. Following childbirth, the abdomen can
protrude and the skin can be loose or sag. In some cases, the abdominal muscles can be so
weakened that the individual may look like she is still pregnant. Despite daily workouts including
sit ups and crunches, a tummy tuck may be needed to restore these muscles.
Breast Reduction
Women with very large pendulous breasts may experience varied medical
problems including back and neck pain. Also, the weight of large breasts can
cause the bra straps to dig into the shoulders leaving groove markings. Large
breasts get in the way of physical activities such as running, making exercise
and weight loss very difficult if not impossible. Breast reduction (reduction
mammaplasty), is a surgical procedure which makes breasts smaller.
There are many different breast reduction techniques. The more traditional
method (inverted T-scar) leaves the breasts with a vertical, long horizontal
scar (along the breast crease). “I utilize the Lejour technique, which leaves
the breast with a single vertical incision (lollipop scar) and, in my opinion,
with a rounder more natural appearing breast and a better cosmetic result.” Breast reductions
are performed as an outpatient procedure and are covered by insurance.
Many of my patients
who have breast
surgery also have other
procedures performed
at the same time. This
allows for one surgery
and one recovery.
advertisement
Breast Augmentation
Women who come to me seeking breast enlargement have very similar goals to those seeking
breast reduction. Both groups of women want to have breasts that are proportional to their
body size with the most natural result possible. In certain situations, a breast lift is also needed
to tighten lax skin. The laxity can be the result of pregnancy or weight loss. When a breast lift
is needed, I utilize the lollipop scar technique. A breast lift procedure is very similar to a breast
reduction. The only difference is that with a breast reduction, breast tissue is removed.
Combined Breast/Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Procedures.
Many of my patients who have breast surgery also have other procedures performed at the
same time. This allows for one surgery and one recovery. The most common combined procedures
performed by Dr. Rhee are breast surgery, whether it is a breast reduction or augmentation,
combined with tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. For those patients
who desire breast augmentation together with a tummy tuck, I am able to place
the breast implants through the tummy tuck incision, leaving the breasts without
any scars.
Liposuction is also commonly performed at the same time. Despite diet and
exercise, certain areas of the body are prone to carry excess fat. For these areas, liposuction
can help. The most common areas for liposuction are the love handles
(upper hip area) and thighs.
Patients who have combined procedures do surprisingly well. In addition to
having the benefit of just one recovery process, there can also be a significant
savings in price.
To learn more, please call our Huntington office to schedule a complimentary
consultation with Dr. Rhee at (631) 424-6707. Located at 257 E. Jericho Tpke., Huntington
Station. www.liplasticsurgery.com.
Meet This
Long Island Woman
Regina Glanzberg, D.V.M.
Partner at Best Friends Veterinary Care
Tell us about Best Friends Veterinary Care.
In March 2012, my business partner, Dr. Amy Maguire, and I
opened the doors to our veterinary office in Nesconset with a
new concept: beauty, comfort, and style, combined with genuine
loving care for all our patients. In a state-of-the-art facility,
our team of dedicated, experienced doctors, licensed
technicians and assistants will instantly make you, your pet,
and your family feel welcome … perhaps even spoiled. The
thorough, patient and careful examination your pet receives
is exactly what he or she deserves. We are extremely proud of
our practice!
Why did you go into veterinary medicine
Ever since I can remember I have always loved animals of all
kinds. You name it, I found it outside or begged my parents to
buy it, and made it my pet: turtles, birds, kittens, fish, puppies,
hermit crabs, lizards, and snakes. Starting at about nine years
of age, I went to summer camp at the Theodore Roosevelt
Bird Sanctuary in Oyster Bay, where their summer programs
were all nature-based, fun, and educational. Marine biology
was where I always thought I was headed; I wanted to be the
next Jacques Cousteau!. My interests in animals, nature, and
surgery made Veterinary Medicine a perfect career choice for
me, and I truly love my “work.” I also still adore anything marine,
and try to spend as much time as possible enjoying boating
and fishing off Long Island.
Tell us about your volunteer work.
Dr. Maguire and I currently volunteer with two worthy nonprofit
groups: Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue and Precious
Pups, an organization that focuses on rescuing smallsized
dogs from kill shelters and unwanted pets from private
homes. It is very rewarding work!
Education, weekly visual comparisons, and
monthly measurements of key areas of the
to recognize the signs and symptoms in
their earliest stages.
The early signs and symptoms of lymphedema
are swelling, a feeling of heaviness,
decreased flexibility, aching or general
discomfort, skin tightness and hardening
of the skin of the upper extremity. By
performing weekly visual comparison and
taking monthly measurements the patient
can establish a baseline from which she
can monitor any changes.
On a weekly basis the patient can compare
hands looking for
pockets of swelling between
the knuckles or
on the back of the hand,
compare the contours
of the lower and upper
arms and bring the finger
tips to rest on the
shoulders to compare
elbows. Monthly measurements
can be taken
around the biceps, elbow, forearm, wrist
and knuckles.
Consult with your physician or certified
lymphedema therapist (CLT) if you notice
any of these symptoms or changes in your
upper extremity.
Good Advice
Exercise
by Richard Linchitz, MD
We must all do long grueling hours of exercise to stay slim
and healthy, right WRONG! Once again, if we look to evolution
for logical answers, we find that throughout the animal
kingdom, animals, including humans, used exercise for two
purposes: play and survival. Almost without exception, these
activities are “stop-start”. There are no animals “working
out”with a steady Target Heart Rate for 20 minutes, 30 minutes,
or 60 minutes etc. Animals show bursts
of activity, interspersed by rest. Once again, through survival of
the fittest, animals, including humans, have adapted so that
maximal health comes from this type of stop-start activity.
The form of exercise that most closely approximates this natural
activity is “interval” workouts. These are workouts where
brief bouts of intense exercise are interspersed with rest.
You can walk and run outdoors or on a treadmill in the gym.
The workout would consist of a warm-up of a few minutes of moderate activity
(walking at a pace where you can whistle or speak fairly comfortably). Then
you would increase the intensity (jogging or even running for 20-60 seconds.
If you are running almost “all out” you could aim for 20 seconds. If you are
jogging at a more moderate pace where talking or whistling would be difficult,
60 seconds would be a reasonable goal). You would then slow down
We must all do long
grueling hours of exercise
right WRONG!
advertisement
to a walk again for several minutes until you are breathing more comfortably.
This process would be repeated four to six times followed by a few minutes of
comfortable walking as a “cool-down”.
That’s it! The entire workout would last 20 minutes or a bit more depending
on the number of intervals completed. The same principles could be adapted
to an elliptical trainer, an exercise bike or even a swimming pool. This could
be repeated two or three times a week. Of course, do not start out these intervals
at top speed until you have trained your body to withstand
the intensity. The fast intervals should initially be at a
very moderate pace until muscles and joints are ready. You
should always consult with your physician before starting any
exercise program. Is this workout difficult It certainly can be
intense! However, the intense part lasts only 20 to 60 seconds.
When I ask patients how they feel about 60 minutes of
exercise per day (the usual “expert”recommendations), they
usually groan. But, when I ask patients if they can stand 20 seconds at a time,
they usually say “Sure!” After an interval session, patients are often energized
rather than exhausted. A side bonus is that metabolism is raised for 48 hours
after these workouts, leading to increased fat burning and weight loss!
Drowned
by Therese Bohman (translated
from the Swedish by Marlaine Delargy)
Reviewed by Carol Hoenig, author of Without Grace
Therese Bohman’s Drowned begins like a lazy summer
day, but soon the air grows stagnant, unmoved
with a hint of a storm on the horizon. Like most literary
fiction, this beautifully written novel at first seems
uneventful, a quiet story where there’s little action occurring.
The cast of characters involve sisters Marina
and Stella, and Stella’s older husband, Gabriel, who
is a successful, charismatic writer. When Marina visits
her sister in Sweden’s rural Skane, a place filled with
a variety of flowers, she soon finds herself drawn to
her brother-in-law, whose behavior is both curious
and disturbing. Stella works in the parks and gar-
den department in town and eagerly shares her
knowledge with Marina about the flowers under
her care. It seems that this is a self-imposed distraction
that keeps her from acknowledging what
is happening at home, but just what is happening
at home It’s all under the surface, with hints
along the way, hints that are reminiscent of a psychological
thriller. My only pet peeve is the continuous
smiling of the characters, a device that I
consider lacking in creativity when showing someone’s
reaction. However, that complaint is minor
since I admit that I was stunned by the disquieting
ending. Drowned offers a bit more substance
from what is usually found on the best-seller list,
something that will stay with you long after summer
is over.
In One Person
by John Irving
Reviewed by Marshall Honorof, professional science
writer and freelance journalist
Best known for unconventional, emotional titles
like The Cider House Rules and The World According to Garp, John Irving
delivers one of his most unusual and intriguing books yet with In One Person.
The story centers on William Abbott, a young man who discovers his bisexual
identity while growing up in a Vermont prep school. Part high school
tribulations, part coming of age story, and part AIDS-related melodrama (as
William grows up), In One Person is hard to categorize.
Like its protagonist, the sometimes-comic novel is full
of contradictions. The plot can feel aimless, and the
characters are absurd (maudlin sexual tragedy trumps
realism in most scenes), but the strength of Irving’s
writing makes it hard to put down. If you’re searching
for a “fun” read, keep searching, but In One Person
is perfect for a summer day that demands a bit of a
Fear not, this is not your average baseball book. While centered on a collegiate
the metaphor for life and all its dreams, struggles, ambitions, and disappointments.
It’s what happens when a simple throw goes fatefully off-course
and how the rest of the game, the season, and the shortstop’s life take on a
whole new path. Harbach writes lyrically about the game of baseball while
Help With Weight Loss and Diabetes
by Dr. Dazhi Chen, PhD, LAC, IPA of N.S.-L.I.J.
Recent reports show that
two thirds of American
or obese in this country and
obesity rates have grown
from 15% in 1978-1980 to
32% in 2003-04.
Not only does obesity increase the risk for
developing major diseases, including type 2
diabetes, heart disease
and stroke, but may lead
to some forms of cancer
as well. Many therapeutic
weight loss programs may
work in the short term,
however, as most Americans
know, the patient
gains the weight back
almost immediately after he or she discontinues
the program — usually under
unhealthy conditions during treatment or
after the patient has stopped exercising.
Weight gain can be attributed to many
things, but metabolism is a key consideration
and should be looked at seriously.
Do You Need To Avoid Probate
By Marc Alhonte, Esq.
Probate is the judicial
process of approving a
will. All wills must be
approved by a Court,
regardless of the size of
the estate.
Some attorneys promote avoiding probate
for all estates, to
minimize costs. However,
probate does not represent
the only cost of settling
an estate. In all
estates, whether or not
probate is involved, assets
must be collected; debts
must be paid; tax returns
may be filed; estate taxes may be due;
and the beneficiaries must receive their
proper inheritance. An estate does not
avoid the need or the expense of doing
these things, by avoiding probate. The
Each estate must be
analyzed on a caseby-case
basis to
determine if avoiding
probate is a strategy
that makes sense.
advertisement
cost of avoiding probate may be more
than the cost of probate.
The way to avoid probate is to dispose
of your property outside your will;
through jointly owned assets, assets with
named beneficiaries (such as life insurance),
or placing assets in a living trust.
There are time when
avoiding probate can
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis
by Rebecca Obedian M.D.
The breast specialists at
Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology
are now using digital
breast tomosynthesis, or
DBT, to perform threedimensional
mammography
for breast cancer
screening and diagnosis.
DBT provides a 3-D image of the breast
using many single low-dose images taken
from different angles.
These images are then
reconstructed into highresolution
slices that are
presented to the radiologist.
Zwanger-Pesiri has pledged
to “Image Wisely.” DBT is
currently performed in conjunction
with standard 2-D
digital mammography. The
combined DBT and 2-D mammogram radiation
dose is lower than the older analog mammography
radiation dose.
Why is DBT important Nationally, approximately
10 – 15% of women in the
U.S. are called back for additional images
after their screening mammogram.
This can be very emotionally stressful
as well as inconvenient since it requires
a trip back to the radiology office for
additional images. However, DBT can
reduce or eliminate the effect of overlapping
breast tissue densities. This
imaging technique helps radiologists
more accurately interpret the mammograms
and may reduce false-positives
and false-negatives associated with 2-D
mammographic examinations. In fact,
some research studies
have reported a reduction
in the false-positive
DBT may allow
call back rate by 30-40%.
radiologists to identify
Some researchers believe
that DBT may allow
tumors which could be
radiologists to identify
missed with standard
tumors which could be
2-D mammography missed with standard 2-D
mammography.
Standard 2-D mammography,
currently considered the “gold
standard,” can be complemented with
DBT. Breast imaging experts expect DBT
to become the new “gold standard.”
Breast Reduction – The Lollipop Scar Technique
by Dr. Charlotte Rhee
Women with very
large pendulous
breasts may experience
a variety of
medical problems
including back and neck pain. Also,
the weight of large breasts can cause
the bra straps to dig into the shoulders
leaving groove
markings. Large breasts
get in the way of physical
activities such as
running and other
sports which can make
exercise and weight
loss very difficult if not
impossible.
Breast Reduction, also known as
reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical
procedure undertaken to make the
breasts smaller. There are many different
breast reduction techniques. The
more traditional method (inverted T-
The LeJour technique
a single vertical incision
(lollipop scar).
scar) leaves the breasts with a vertical
and a long horizontal scar (along the
breast crease). I utilize the LeJour technique
which leaves the breast with a
single vertical incision (lollipop scar)
and in my opinion, with a rounder
and more naturally appearing breast
with a better cosmetic result.
Breast reductions are
performed as an outpatient
procedure and are
covered by insurance. If
Do you want to achieve the perfect sun-kissed glow without having to spend hours
sitting in the sun Do you admire the flawless bronzed complexions of your favorite
celebrities Now there is a way for you to acquire that look. Sunless Tanning gives
you a tan that is both customizable and natural-looking. Everyone from the Kardashians
to the contestants on Dancing With The Stars choose Sunless Tanning as
their go-to bronzing product. This innovative way of creating a whole body tan has
gained great popularity. Sunless Tanning gives an allover tan without UV exposure.
Your first plan of action in achieving your perfect sunless tan is to contact your local
BEACH BUM TANNING location. Beach Bum Tanning, with 13 locations on Long
Island, is the industry leader for all of your tanning needs. They offer
two great options for Sunless Tanning- Mystic Tan and Airbrush
Tanning.
Mystic Tan is an easy, efficient way to achieve a golden glow.
You step into a booth, press a button, and a light mist of solution
is dispersed evenly across your body. Do not worry- the solution
is completely safe. You are being sprayed with a combination of
aloe-vera and sugar extracts. The patented MagneTan Technology
guarantees to provide you with a natural distribution of color. Millions
of people each year look to Mystic Tan to give them a bronzed makeover in 30
seconds, without sun exposure.
Airbrush Tanning was introduced in recent years and has quickly become the
most popular way to obtain a sunless tan. This procedure involves a one-on-one
session where an airbrush artist applies organic solution by hand to your body
using an airbrush gun- essentially painting and sculpting your body to provide
a NATURAL, QUICK layer of color. With the help of air, the color is sprayed on
the outermost layer of the skin and it’s designed to leave you with a uniformed,
smooth glow. The tanning solution is applied by a certified airbrush artist that
will blend a color combination to match with your specific skin tone. Beach Bum
Tanning offers over 100 different color combinations to help any of their clients
achieve their desired look.
Do not be fooled by over the counter products you can purchase at your cosmetic
counter that claim to be the same as airbrush tanning. These aerosol cans simply
do not have the power to give you the same level of color as professional airbrush
tanning does. You will only be wasting your money if you purchase one of these
products.
A Mystic Spray Tan takes only minutes to complete, an Airbrush
Tan, approximately 15 minutes. It is recommended that you call
ahead to make an appointment for an airbrush tan, as it is a personal
procedure. Shower and exfoliate prior to your spray tan
session. Exfoliating provides a smooth surface for the color and
prevents unsightly streaks. Before heading to the salon, dress in
comfortable, dark clothing. The solution dries quickly on your skin.
When it comes to what to wear during your session, it is completely
up to you. Some tanners go au natural, while others choose to wear a bikini
or disposable underwear.
Sunless Tanning is truly the wave of the future when it comes to getting that beautiful
sun-kissed glow. Not only that, but getting a tan this way is fast and easy. Once
you try your first spray tanning session, you’re likely to be so impressed that you’ll
never want to bronze your body any other way!
Women’s Health Update
RISK OF BREAST CANCER REDUCED
BY WEIGHT CONTROL & EXERCISE
Exercise has become more crucial than ever in the fight against breast cancer.
Postmenopausal women who walked 30 minutes a day lowered their
breast cancer risk by 20%, according to the Women’s Health Initiative government-funded
study. This evidence is critical, given the numerous factors
women cannot control, but yet, have the strongest influence on their risk for
breast cancer, such as age, race, genetics and the age they begin menopause.
While there is still much debate as to how much exercise is required, according
to Nancy Campbell, MS Clinical Exercise Physiologist from the Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute, several studies have found there is a benefit in 150 minutes a
week of moderate walking. “Recent research indicates a protective association
between higher levels
of exercise and incidence
of breast cancer.
The average risk reduction
among more active
compared to less active
women was about
Postmenopausal
women who
walked 30
minutes a day
lowered their
breast cancer risk
by 20%.
16August 2012
25%,” says Campbell.
“There has been evidence
that intermediate
levels of activity provide
some benefit, and
higher levels provide
more protection. The
protective association seems to be stronger for long-term or lifetime exercisers,
postmenopausal women, and those with a lower body mass index.”
Maintaining a healthy weight throughout adulthood, in addition to exercising
regularly, has been shown to reduce the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer,
according to an American Cancer Society study. The study also has evidence
that women who gained 21 to 30 pounds after age 18 were 40% more likely
to develop breast cancer than women who stayed within 5 pounds of the
weight they maintained in their 20’s. Those who gained more than 70 pounds
doubled their risk of breast cancer. Overall, obese women are 30% to 50%
more likely to develop breast cancer than women at a healthy weight.
While there is no way to eliminate all risk of cancer, avoiding extra pounds reduces
the risk of not only breast cancer, but tumors of the kidneys, esophagus, colon
and uterine lining, according to the National Cancer Institute. Staying lean also
reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, joint problems and other ailments.
PMS & INSOMNIA
Insomnia is an important, and rarely discussed side effect of premenstrual syndrome,
also known as PMS. While bloating, fatigue, cramping and even headaches,
are commonly chatted about amongst workplace water coolers and with
doctors, many women are not aware that insomnia is also a side-effect of PMS.
Female hormones, namely progesterone and estrogen (the active hormones during
PMS), play a significant role in bouts of insomnia during the weeks before
menstruation begins.
“Issues with sleep in women
have a lot to do with the balance
between estrogen and
progesterone. If the balance is
too high in favor of estrogen
then you have more estrogen
activity. Therefore, insomnia
is a side effect,” according
to Robert J. Hedaya, M.D.,
D.F.A.P.A., Clinical Professor of
Psychiatry at the Georgetown
University Hospital and Founder
of the National Center for
Whole Psychiatry.
33% of women say their
sleep is disturbed during their
menstrual cycles, according to
a 2007 National Sleep Foundation
poll. 16% confess to
missing one or more days of
work a month because of sleep
problems. Put plainly, estrogen
in women acts as an energy
supplement. During ovulation,
around day 14, estrogen activity
increases, causing sleep disturbances
for women.
After ovulation, progesterone,
the hormone that can
cause drowsiness, begins to rise. Several days before the start of menstruation,
estrogen and progesterone levels drop. This period of time is when many
women have trouble sleeping, due to the abrupt withdrawal of progesterone.
To combat the problem, Hedaya recommends exercising as it promotes the
body into deep, restorative, sleep. Also, avoid alcohol, especially at night, as it
may cause wakefulness and fragmented sleep.
VACCINES AREN’T JUST FOR KIDS
Vaccines are not just for children, a fact that escapes many adults due to simple
lack of awareness. Annually, 45,000 adult Americans die from vaccine-preventable
diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Women’s Health Update
This is a
significant
medical
development
because massage
is yielding similar
benefits as aspirin
or ibuprofen.
18August 2012
Since many adults do not have annual doctor check-ups, unlike children who
have regularly scheduled doctor visits for vaccines, adults are simply unaware
that they may need immunization. Should an adult have missed any vaccines as
child, such as those for measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, and other
infectious diseases, they should consult a physician about getting vaccinated.
While the number of people getting some vaccines has risen slightly, overall
numbers remain low. 2010 saw an increase in three vaccines – tetanus, diphtheria,
and Tdap (which prevents whooping cough) – which rose from 1.6%
to 8.2%. There was also an increase in the use of the shingles vaccine among
Caucasians aged 60 and older. The number of women aged 19-26, those who
got at least one dose of the human papillomavirus
(HPV) vaccine, which protects against about 70 percent
of all cervical cancers, increased 3.6 percentage
points, to 20.7 percent.
Vaccination schedules for adults, however, are more
complicated. Age and health are also factors in whether
adults should get certain shots, unlike most of the
pediatric vaccines that are solely based on age. Adult
vaccines are recommended only for a certain age,
high-risk medical condition, occupation or travel.
MASSAGE MAY HELP HEAL MUSCLES
AND RELIEVE PAIN
New evidence from the Researchers at McMaster
University in Canada finds that massage has a positive
effect on the activity of certain genes in the body
to help reduce muscle inflammation and pain. This is
a significant medical development because massage is yielding similar benefits
as aspirin or ibuprofen.
Massage has been shown to set off a series of molecules in muscles to reverse
discomfort caused by exercise. Proteins known as inflammatory cytokines that
spur swelling and tenderness, have been shown to reduce production after
massage. Massage has also been shown to increase production of proteins that
cause muscles to manufacture mitochondria, the cell structures that construct
energy and allow muscles to recuperate from heavy activity.
Western medicine has often dismissed massage as a bona fide therapy; however,
these recent findings will have an impact on traditional medicine, as massage
has been shown to have a similar pain-relieving effect as drugs like aspirin,
ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve).
OBESITY AND BABY BOOMERS
Approximately 36% of baby boomers are obese, according to a recent study
by LifeGoesStrong.com. Americans born between 1946 and 1965 are known
as the baby boomer generation due to the population increase after World War
II. This group makes up nearly 20% of the U.S. population. Experts hypothesize
that boomers may take a big hit in their pocketbooks from medical costs due to
obesity related health issues, should they continue to gain weight.
Obesity increases the risk of a variety of diseases and conditions, such as
cancer, sleep apnea, respiratory issues, osteoarthritis, liver and gallbladder diseases,
infertility, hypertension, high cholesterol and coronary heart disease.
60% of the boomers studied were currently dieting to lose weight, and slightly
more were incorporating more fruits, vegetables and foods lower in carbohydrates
and salt into their daily diet. Diet, however, is not the only element
involved in losing weight. Without exercising, dieting alone, could weaken
muscle mass, which naturally decreases with age. The key is incorporating diet
and exercise to achieve a sustainable, healthy weight. Adults should be getting
2.5 hours per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, which includes brisk
walking, jogging, dancing, and even pushing a lawn mower.
holds close to her heart. She recently made a lasting impression in the New
York theater as well, earning her first Drama Desk and Tony nods in 2011
for her role in Lombardi as Marie Lombardi, the famed football coach’s
wife. 2012 brought Light her first Drama Desk and Tony Awards for her
memorable work in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Other Desert
Cities as Silda, a screenwriter freshly dried out after a stint in rehab. Amidst
the onslaught of awards season events and getting the new Judith Light
Jewelry Collection off the ground, she reflected on her career past, present,
and future.
“If we let ourselves know
each other, we’ll have
compassion and love for one
another.”
How was being an only child helpful on your path to becoming a professional
actress
I had incredibly supportive parents who spent a lot of time and focus on
me. They didn’t enable me and they made sure I was extremely disciplined in
everything that I did, including my schoolwork and in the show business path
that I was taking. They were really thrilled about my acting because that was
something that they really wanted to do.
My dad, who was an extraordinary man, recently passed away. He modeled
for me the kind of discipline that one had to have in any field. He was in the
food business and he used to have to get up at 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning in
order to get to work, and then he would get home at 6 o’clock and would go to
sleep. When I started doing plays and community theater, he would drive me
45 minutes to rehearsal, sleep in the car, and then drive me home. If you have
other children it makes it much harder to be able to do things like that.
The other important piece of being an only child is that I didn’t have a lot of
friends or people around me, so my joy and my pleasure came from books and
plays, and those characters became my friends. I remember when I was quite
young sitting in my room just reading O’Neill and Shakespeare, and connecting
to those characters. If you have a lot of other people in your household you
tend to be more distracted, but I wasn’t. Those were some of the things that
really helped to focus my work that has been coming to fruition now.

What is your earliest memory of yourself as a performer
I was 3 years old. My mother helped me memorize “Twas the Night Before
Christmas” to perform for my father. It was extremely impactful because I
remember he started to cry and I ran to him and I said to myself, “This is
what I want to do, I want to find a way to have an impact on people.”
How did that sentiment stay with you as an adult
It does not hold you in particularly good standing when you are a grown up
in our business. I really had to begin to understand as I went on what it was
that was really driving me, because that’s not a very long lasting approach to
having a career. (Manager/Producer) Herb Hamsher was the one who said to
me, “You’ve really got to find a way to grow up and relate to this business.”
Our business is very complicated. Just because people think you’re cute or
talented when you’re little, doesn’t mean it holds you in good stead as you’re
forging a long term career. There are other things to consider, like caring for
other people and kindness and generosity, and not being narcissistic. I had
to move away from wanting to be the center of attention.
In the late 70s you played Karen Wolek on One Life to Live. What about
her makes her character continue to resonate with fans of the show and
actors alike
She sacrificed herself for her friend. She was courageous in the face of her
own demise on that witness stand, and she told the truth about who she was
to an entire group of people who were friends and family, people who were
more than likely going to reject her. However, there was something inside
her that no matter how damaged you saw that she was, and how much low
self esteem she had, and how fraught her life was in keeping secrets, she had
the courage to say, “This is my friend, I am supporting her, I am telling the
truth even if I must sacrifice myself.” That’s
why I think she is a mythic, iconic character.
Karen seems to be the complete opposite of
the sweet persona you display. She had such
low self-esteem, and was always looking for
love and acceptance. Did/do people associate
you with her
Early on those were very strong characteristics
in me, which is why I understood them. As
human beings we have inside of us everything
that everybody else has. We all do. That’s why
I say, “We’re all connected.” If we let ourselves
know each other, we’ll have compassion and
love for one another.
You met your husband, Robert Desiderio,
while you were both working on One Life
to Live. Are there any added challenges to
making a marriage work when you’re both in
the business of entertainment
Of course! After all, you’re going to work
together a lot every day. But you have your
private life and your work life. It’s important
that you be communicating and making sure
you’re staying on top of everything that comes
up in relation to all of that.
Why have you described 1977 your
“frustrating” period
It was that transition from being a child in
the business to being a grown-up. It was one
of those existential moments, and at the same
time it was a temper tantrum. I wanted what
I wanted when I wanted it, and I thought I
should be getting everything I wanted. When
you’re a child you don’t understand delay of
gratification and you don’t understand that
the world doesn’t revolve around you. When
things finally shifted I said, “However well
Judith Light in her Drama Desk and Tony award-wining role of Silda in
Other Desert Cities
known I become, I want to find a way to be a service, because celebrity has
a lot of great perks, but those things will not hold you in good stead in terms
of becoming the human being that you wanted to become.”
Is that when you started working with charities such as Broadway Cares:
Equity Fights AIDS and Faith in America
Yes, that was actually at the time when my friends were dying. I began to
realize that life does not go on forever, and that there are people in my life
that I adore, love and honor, and I am losing them. With HIV and AIDS, there
was a pretense that was covering the fact that there was a lack of support,
care, interest, and movement forward by our country and our government. I
began to see this homophobic reaction that was happening within the body
of this country and around the world, and I said, “Wait a minute. This is not
okay.” I felt very strongly compelled to start saying something about it.
Of the many organizations with which you have shared your time, which
holds the most meaning for you
The Point Foundation is an extraordinary organization that I’ve been
working with for a long time. We give scholarships to LGBT youth who are
marginalized and cut off by their financial contributors because they came
out as gay or were found out that they are gay and are cut off from their
financial support. We move in and give them scholarships, mentorship, and
support. Of course there’s also Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS. They’re
very close to my heart. Faith in America, which is about ending faith based
bigotry in the gay community. When I was doing The Ryan White Story, I
saw how much prejudice was heaped on Ryan by a community who did not
understand him, and they were terrified. Any kind of prejudice toward a
community is truly reprehensible to me. It does not speak to the angels of
our higher nature.
Did it surprise you that Who’s the Boss, a
program featuring a high-powered woman
in charge, did so well in 1983 What type of
feedback did you get based on her status over
Tony
No, it didn’t surprise me. I think ABC knew it
would succeed, that’s what was brilliant about
what they did. Everybody knew that everybody
was ready. It was one of those things where
the pencil had already dropped, it was only
a matter of time until it hit the table. They
didn’t feel I had status over Tony. The answer
to that show is in the question of the show;
everybody at one time or another was the
boss on that show. What you were seeing was
not somebody who was just a high-powered
executive, you saw a woman who needed
help. She was smart enough (after she listened
to her mother), to choose somebody who was
going to be there for her, and he never felt
diminished by the job he did. And she never
felt that he was diminished by the job that he
did. She knew she needed him, and she knew
he was fantastic for her. He knew he was there
to be of service for somebody who needed
support out there in the world. It was all about
the love that was happening, that’s why it was
such a feel good show. People keep saying,
“Why don’t we have shows like that now”
A show like it would not be outside of the
norm in 2012. Do you think it would be as big
a hit today
I think you’d have to modernize it. I always
called it a very powerful, feminist show. You’d
have to do some things to change it, but I
think the essence of it, the family, the love,

Judith Light as Marie
Lombardi with Dan
Lauria as Vince
Lombardi. Judith
received a Drama Desk
and Tony nomination.
Judith Light with the cast of
Who’s the Boss
the humor, the support, the service, the care… I think it would absolutely
fly today.
What is your favorite memory from working on Who’s the Boss
Working with that cast was amazing. Tony Danza and I became really good
friends. He is so special. We are still friends today. He came to see me in
Other Desert Cities. People in the airport still say, “Where’s Tony” I say,
“Sorry, I couldn’t bring him with me.”
A role that you’re very well-known for in the theater community is Dr. Bearing
in WIT. Have you had the opportunity to share your WIT experience with Cynthia
Nixon, who was nominated for a Tony after playing the same role
We did speak a little bit about it and what it was going to be like. Each one of
us who has created Vivian Bearing has her own process in relation to her and
around her. I sent Cynthia a little cap because all of us women have had to
shave our heads. This recognition is something that should have happened a
long time ago when Kathleen Chalfant was doing the play. It’s been a really a
long time coming that it made its way to Broadway,
and its being there was well-deserved.
Does getting your first and second Tony nod now
that you are in a later stage in your life mean more
than if it had happened earlier on
I think I would have been thrilled then, and I’m
thrilled now. I just worked longer, and having been
away from the theater for a long time and then
making my way back to it – it means a lot. I think if
I had gotten it earlier I would have been grateful too,
but in a different way. I went away for so long, I got so
scared. I did only television and film, and then I was
frightened and I waited twenty-two years. The thing
that brought me back to the theater was when I did
WIT, I took over for Kathleen Chalfant. I slowly worked
my way back into the theater and let people know that
I was interested and that I wanted to be there. Having
worked so hard makes it different.
Other Desert Cities’ Aunt Silda is a sassy
“recovering” alcoholic. Can you relate to her
character in any way
I relate to all kinds of feelings of not feeling like
the right stuff. In many ways we are in a very
Judith Light’s
Favorites
Book: I really love Shakespeare. My interests are so
varied that it’s hard to narrow this down.
Restaurants: Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill, and anything
that Danny Meyer puts his hand to.
Vacation spot: I love Italy. I just did a trip to Egypt
several years ago and that was extraordinary. I’m
taking another trip to India, so I’m looking forward
to that.
TV Shows: Law & Order: SVU, Nurse Jackie, Smash.
Things that are powerful that when I get a chance,
I watch.
Relaxing activities: Hot baths, meditation and
yoga. I do those things to get myself centered and
back on track.
addicted society. No matter what your addiction is, I think we can all relate to
that. Silda is a very powerful person and a very smart person in that system,
but because of all the things that have happened to her within the dynamics
of the relationship of the family and her sister, she doesn’t feel powerful. She
covers all of her damage through her humor. I find that incredibly interesting.
When you were on the stage as a young actress, did you ever think you
would see the day when you would stand on the Tony Awards stage and get
to thank those who helped you get there
No. I never did. I dreamed about it, I hoped for it, but I didn’t know that it
would happen. When you have Other Desert Cities, a play by a man like Jon
Robin Baitz and his genius, and you have a director like Joe Mantello, and you
have a cast like I have... This is a combination of working with a tremendous
group of people. I never dreamed that I would get to see this.
Do you have any regrets about the decisions you have made in your career
and/or in your personal life
Years ago I would have said, “Yes.” Now, I really
have the hindsight to see that there has been a kind
of guidance and a plan. Not faith. I’m talking about
how I think our lives are divinely choreographed,
and how we are guided well if we listen. My
favorite quote from Kierkegaard is: “Life can only be
understood backward, but it must be lived forward.”
In that way I look at everything that has happened
for me, and I say, “Oh, this had to happen this way
for whatever reason it was.” But until you get older
it’s hard to see that. I have stopped trying so hard to
pull, and orchestrate, and make happen the things
that I think should happen. I have come to the place
where I am letting go and listening and receiving the
guidance that I think is there and available for all of
us. I just think there’s some bigger force or bigger
energy in the universe. It’s our job to get clarity to
make sure that we’re listening well, and to have a
team around us. I have great people around me who
know that if I get off track, they are there to support
me and bring me back on track. We need those
people in our lives that help us sift through what
we’re looking for and how we’re looking.
Successful Summer Picnics
Suggestions and a Recipe
Cheryl Stair is my go-to person for ideas on picnicking on Long Island.
Since 1986, she and husband John Kowalenko have been offering beautiful
and delicious fare for parties on the east end. Whether you’re dining
al fresco on the or in your own backyard, Cheryl Stair has some tips for a
perfect picnic.
Location and timing
Stair favors Ditch Plains Beach on the sandy tip of our Island in Montauk,
loved too by beginning surfers and longboarders (riding 8 to 14 foot boards)
for the consistent waves. High on her list is picnicking around a bonfire at
Georgica Pond, and for those with a Southold Town permit, she recommends
enjoying the sunset at Goldsmith’s Inlet. If traveling out east is not on your
itinerary, Stair suggests “a lantern-lit table in your own backyard for an easy
breezy way to enjoy the gentle weather of the season.”
Keep It Simple
A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, said the poet, plus spicy hard salami and salty
sheets of prosciutto, purchased from a local specialty store. Add an oozy ball
of burrata—fresh Italian mozzarella with a creamy
filling—and you have a simple but delicious feast.
Going a bit fancier
“The North Fork Table and Inn’s ‘Lunch Truck’
serves up the best lobster roll that I’ve ever consumed,”
says Stair. There are also several gourmet
food shops with items to go - Citarella, Red Horse
Market, Round Swamp, and a new comer, Pepalajefa
in Sag Harbor, that Stair thinks looks promising.
Want to Cook your Own
Try some grilled Montauk sushi-grade tuna in your
favorite marinade. For sides, a warm potato salad
dressed in a dill vinaigrette next to some fava beans grilled whole in the shell
with Amagansett Sea Salt (see recipe) are the perfect accompaniment. For
dessert, simple but beautiful – a big bowl of cherries.
Be Prepared
Give your basket a once over to be sure you have everything you need
such as silverware, a corkscrew, and matches to light a bonfire. A batteryoperated
camp light is a good idea so you can see while you dispose of the
recyclable plates and glasses in the trash bag you have brought along. If you
are planning to grill or light a bonfire on the beach, bring a metal tray to hold
the coals so you can douse them and remove this debris as well.
Remember food safety when planning dinner al fresco
Reusable ice packs placed in the cooler are invaluable for keeping foods
cold and out of direct sunlight, particularly dairy, egg, and protein products.
An ordinary thermos is great for keeping cold soups cold. Otherwise, a pretty
wicker picnic hamper may be used for shorter trips.
Art of Eating’s Warm Potato Salad with Herbs
2 pounds local organic potatoes, Yukon or Fingerlings, whichever is available
½ cup finely chopped local celery
½ cup finely diced local shallots
2 tablespoons chopped chervil
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
2 tablespoons chopped dill
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
Place washed potatoes in pot large enough to cover with one inch of water.
Season with salt, should taste like ocean water. Bring to boil, reduce heat to
simmer. Cook until the potatoes are tender when pierced with fork. Drain
very well.
While potatoes are draining, mix celery, shallots, mustard, herbs, vinegar
and oil in separate bowl.
While potatoes are still warm but cool enough to handle, cut into 1-1 ½
inch cubes. Add vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Art of Eating’s Grilled Fava Beans
This is so simple it is not really a recipe. It is however a way to enjoy fava
beans with none of the work usually associated with this king of the legumes-world.
Lightly rub washed fava beans in their shell with extra virgin olive oil.
Lay out favas on grill once coals have turned white. Do not place directly
over coals but to the side of the grill top for indirect heat. When shells
begin to blister and brown turn over and cook until other side begins
to blister and seams of shell just start to split. Remove from heat and
sprinkle with Amagansett Sea Salt. Eat whole shell and all. Eating with
your fingers is okay.
Full, voluptuous lips have long been considered sexy. Years before
Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe’s puckered lips adorned in bright red
lipstick set the standard for the feminine embouchement. Contrast
that with other celebrity images of lips gone wrong like Lisa Rinna,
who revealed the secret behind her overly plump lips as silicone. The
fear of the “trout pout” or “duck lips” is a concern I must allay in
any patient having lip augmentation. Just as I assure them, I can also
assure you - lip augmentation can give you the fuller, voluptuous lips
you want in a way that looks entirely natural. So if you want bigger, more beautiful lips,
here is some good advice on how to go about it.
Seek expert advice. Not everyone with a syringe is qualified
to deliver the lips you want. There is definitely some art and
science behind any treatment you receive and nowhere is that
more true than with the lips. An intimate knowledge and preservation
of the proper lip anatomy is the key to keeping your
lips looking natural while growing in size. At a minimum, the
person you entrust with your lips should be a board certified
facial plastic surgeon, general plastic surgeon, or dermatologist
who performs a lot of injectable and surgical treatments on the
lips. As with any procedure, it is a good idea to see some before and after pictures first.
Dwell on the details. The lips are complex anatomic structures that have different
components. When I see a patient for lip augmentation, my discussion with them goes
way beyond size. I routinely educate patients about the components of the lip like the
white roll, philtral columns, and vermilion. Through this educational process and discussion
I can determine whether the patient actually wants to make their lips bigger or rather
just reshaped and more defined. Some patients simply want to reverse some of the aging
Want Voluptuous Lips Seek Expert Advice
process in the lips, not make them bigger. You should talk about these details with any
prospective doctor.
Know what is going into your face or lips. I recently surgically removed silicone from
a patient’s lips who told me that she had no idea what she had injected into her lips, but
only that her girlfriend had the same procedure done by a non-physician in a salon and
had “no problem.” In the news, a mid-western woman self- injected silicone she purchased
on the internet into her face and lips causing permanent disfigurement. Make sure
you sign an informed consent document that tells you what the substance being used in
your augmentation is and what possible risks or side effects of the procedure might be.
Try something temporary first. If you are considering lip
augmentation, try non-surgical augmentation with a temporary
filler first. Doing something temporary allows you to first
try out your new lips and gauge if your provider can achieve the
look you want. We now have very safe long-lasting fillers, like
Juvederm, which work quite well in lip augmentation. Fillers are
the best treatment to add definition to certain parts of the lips
and they are also sometimes used in patients who have surgical
lip augmentation with fat injections or V-Y advancement. Some
patients actually elect to stick with fillers as their “permanent”
solution for voluptuous lips.
If you want permanent lip augmentation or change, know that there isn’t one
“gold standard” procedure. Fat injections, V-Y lip advancement, lip implantation with
dermal-fat-fascia or alloderm are all procedures that can permanently augment the lips.
The choice of the procedure depends on your anatomy and the experience of your surgeon.
Again, it is important in this situation to seek expert advice.
Catching Up With Carol
by Carol Silva
“I Have Thought About You Everyday of My Life”
March 2, 1952 Jane Bachy was born in Westchester Square
Hospital in the Bronx. Two days later she went home with Ann
& Andy Bachy. She grew up in Syosset in a world overflowing
with family love, friends and schools.
March 2, 1952 Ann and Andy hadn’t been in the delivery
room with Jane. An 18 year old girl had. But Jane’s adoption
was never a secret. Her parents explained that her birth parents
couldn’t take care of her but loved her enough to give her to a
family that needed a baby. Jane was a Bachy.
In the 1970s Jane met Jim Groene at St. Ambrose College in Iowa. By November 2009
their son Taylor was 29 year and their 33 year old daughter Thea was married and considering
having children. Thea had medical history questions Jane couldn’t answer. But Jane
didn’t try contacting her birth parents until she read the book, The Girls Who Went Away:
The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades
before Roe v.Wade. It was the story of unmarried women forced to give up their children.
Suddenly Jane had to know if she had been torn from the arms of her teenaged mother.
By now Jane’s dad, Andy, had passed away. Her mom Ann, had had a stroke. So
Thea helped Jane search NYC’s birth registration books for clues. They came up empty.
So Jane called New Jersey historian and adoptee Pam Slaton. Within 24 hours, Slaton
called 14 women who’d delivered baby girls in Westchester Square that day, saying,
“I’m a historian with a client searching for her mother.” Virginia “Ginny” DeMarco
from upstate Newburgh was the only woman who gasped. Ginny denied being Jane’s
mother, but took Slaton’s number. Ginny called back 3 minutes later. “No one knows,”
she explained, except for Ginny’s daughter Patricia.
Then Ginny decided to call Jane. “Hi Jane. It’s Ginny. I have thought about you every
day of my life!” Ginny never saw Jane’s birth father after he went off to the Korean War.
In 1954 she married Joe. Now Jane had a brother Rudy, a sister Patricia and 50 year old
“baby” brother Joey.
Then Jane told Ginny about her family, adding, “God has blessed you and will continue
to bless you for the love and courage you showed me March 20, 1952.” Ginny
closed with, “I love you.”
They spent weeks on the phone “discovering” each other until New Years weekend
when they all met in Newburgh. Jane says they talked alike and they looked alike. After
all, they were family.
It was so right – for five months. Then March 28, 2010, Jim Groene was diagnosed
with terminal cancer. But he told Jane, “I’m so happy you‘ll be fine. You have your
own family now.” Eight days later Ginny had simple knee replacement surgery. A week
later, Jane got a shocking call. Ginny had developed an infection. She was gone. People
gasped at Ginny’s wake in Newburgh when Jane walked in. She looked just like Ginny.
After all they were family.
Jane says her brothers and sister got her, Thea and Taylor through Jim’s passing on July
10, 2010, with solace, joy, abundance and unconditional love.
Jane acknowledges that not every adoption search has a happy ending. But she hopes
hers gives pregnant women “the courage to give adoption a thought.” There’s a new
normal for Jane, including this summer’s party at Joey’s, sending her new niece off to
college. Jane says, “What started as an adventure has turned into a new life.” Amen.
Good Advice
The aging process, if you haven’t noticed, has a wear-and-tear effect on
our skin and our bodies. As we enter our forties and early fifties the jaw line
and neck begin to loosen, creating jowls, neck laxity, vertical bands in the
neck, and that much dreaded “turkey neck.” In recent years we have
become intolerant of these consequences, and more of us are seeking to
rewind the clock and revitalize our physical being.
There were over 100,000 facelifts performed in 2009 according to the
American Society of Plastic Surgeons, but the techniques used vary widely. There are corporate
sponsored face lifts that are advertised on television claiming no downtime, trademarked lifts,
mini lifts, S-lifts, MACS lifts, and deep plane lifts. This is all very confusing,
and most of us do not understand the vital differences. How do you decide
what procedure gives the best results, with minimal scarring and downtime,
and the longest lasting results This is the most commonly asked
question by my patients.
Short-incision “mini” face lifts, often the ones advertised on television,
utilize an abbreviated incision to lift the skin. While the incision is small
(hidden inside the ear) leaving minimal scarring, post-operative bleeding
and bruising is a trademark of these procedures. They typically tighten only the skin and do
not lift and tighten the muscles. As a result, they can leave patients with a windswept,
“pulled” appearance, and the results last only three to five years, as the underlying facial muscles
are not tightened. The facial muscles are the structure of the face, the beams that hold up
the face lift if you will; and if not treated the lifted face will fall earlier than desired.
Compared to “mini” face lifts, a deep plane face lift yields more effective, longer lasting
results with my patient population. It is a procedure that lifts the skin and muscle as one unit,
as well as lifting the mid-face and cheek area. On the downside, deep plane face lifts require
a very large incision, resulting in more noticeable scarring which makes hiding your procedure
virtually impossible.
The most state-of-the-art face lift is a recently developed hybrid technique, that I call the
The Future Lift: A New Hybrid Facelift Technique
by Andrew A. Jacono, M.D., FACS
The most state-of-the-art
face lift is a recently
developed hybrid technique,
that I call the Future Lift.
advertisement
Future Lift, which fuses the optimal features of older-generation, short-incision “mini” face
lifts with deep plane face lifts. Hybrid face lifts yield superior, natural looking results with minimal
scarring and a shorter recovery (7-10 days). In addition, this lift restores volume to the
cheekbones and smoothes nasolabial folds, resulting in a youthful, beautiful, heart- shaped
face and authentic result that does not appear tight or “overdone.” For years, my patients
have had to choose between better results or less scarring. With hybrid face lifts, they get the
best of both worlds.
The Future Lift uses a short incision, while lifting the facial tissue and muscles simultaneously
so patients get the superior results of a deep plane face lift, combined with the minimal scarring
of a “mini lift.” It is not only an option that delivers best-in-class
results, but a procedure that offers longer-lasting results as well. The standard
lifetime of a “mini lift” is between three to five years, but with newer
hybrid face lifts results typically last 12 to 15 years.
Just like a “mini face lift,” The Future Lift can be performed under local
anesthesia in about an hour and a half. General anesthesia is not necessary,
making this a safe procedure as well. Given the level of difficulty in
performing this procedure, as a more detailed understanding of the anatomy
is required, I encourage any patient considering this procedure to seek a physician who specializes
in facial plastic surgery and possesses the level of expertise required to perform a hybrid
face lift. As a committed facial plastic surgeon, I assure that all of my patients have a clear
understanding of the different types of procedures. Any patient considering a face lift should
be aware of all of their options.
To learn more about this innovative procedure, please call our New York or Great Neck offices at
212-570-2500 or 516-773-4646, or you may visit us at www.NewYorkFacialPlasticSurgery.com.
in photo-rejuvenation.
IPL (intense pulsed light) also known as
“photo-facial” is a treatment breakthrough
that can correct a variety of benign skin
conditions, such as spider veins, age spots,
sun damage, mottled pigmentation,
Combining the expertise of
the surgeon with that of the
medical aesthetician can
produce results that far exceed
a patient’s expectations
broken capillaries and rosacea. This noninvasive
treatment delivers a special range
of wavelengths of light in customized
pulses gently into the skin. The light is
absorbed either superficially by broken
capillaries and dark pigment, or by deeper
and larger vessels and collagen. Dilated
capillaries coagulate, pigmented lesions
darken and then slough off, and new
collagen fibers are laid
down giving the skin
a renewed and more
youthful appearance.
Many patients report a
reduction in pore size,
smoother skin and less
wrinkles. Treatments
are gentle, offering
gradual results with
little or no downtime or side effects.
