Safari Park Wood!
By Dan White
What Does Safari Park and the
San Diego Wood Turners Have
in Common
Well, we have started a new adventure
with Safari Park in San
Diego. It seems that a new tiger
exhibit is under construction
and there was a need to remove
some trees. Two Monkey Puzzle
trees had to be cut down. Our
connection with the park is to
take the wood which we did on
March 2nd and turn bowls for
the donors of this worthwhile
project. Several million dollars
in donations will breathe life
into a new exhibit for the enjoyment
of the public.
bowls for the exhibit donors.
You too need to join with us
in turning bowls for this Safari
Park/San Diego Wood Turner
connection. The exhibit should
be finished in January and we
need your completed bowls
before that date (I will let you
know of the exact date when it
is determined). For your turning
efforts there is a piece of wood
for you and one for the bowl you
are turning for the cause.
Please see me at the wood area
for your wood. We need 20 or
more bowls so don’t be shy.
Some of you might want to even
turn a couple of bowls for the
park.
We hope to create some positive
press for the San Diego Wood
Turners and further our efforts in
encouraging others to appreciate
and collect pieces of turned
wood. There is also a good
possibility that this gesture on
our part will open the door for
possibly other wood at the park
or zoo as it becomes available.
David Heiser, Karen
Freitas, John Roddy,
Rob Eckhoff, and
Dan White traveled
to Safari Park this
past Saturday and
met with Catherine
Osborne, project superintendent,
to load
several trucks with
Monkey Puzzle wood
that had just been
fallen. The wood
was taken to the Nottingham
Center and
sealed/covered. We
took a piece or two
of the wood to begin
the process of turning
