with the majority <strong>of</strong> the wild gators coming from Florida as nuisance<br />

military pride is alive and well. The recipient <strong>of</strong> nine WWII Battle<br />

in the Atlantic for a year before joining the Pacific Fleet in mid-1943.<br />
The Memorial Park also includes a snack bar, memorial rose garden<br />

donated by Dr. Amos Garrett, a doctor<br />

The development <strong>of</strong> the park<br />
began back in 1968. It consists <strong>of</strong> three<br />
tennis courts, four s<strong>of</strong>tball fields, and<br />
four baseball fields with a concession<br />
stand. There is a pavilion with picnic<br />
tables and playground perfect for birthday<br />
parties and family gatherings. In<br />
addition to this area we now have our<br />
Kids Park built in Garrett Park, east <strong>of</strong><br />
the pavilion. City workers and volunteers<br />
from Robertsdale and surrounding<br />
areas worked diligently to complete the<br />
structure. Also opened in May 2012 is<br />

Golden LivingCenter–Foley has been<br />
servicing the healthcare needs <strong>of</strong><br />
many local seniors for over forty-six years.<br />
The Center <strong>of</strong>fers skilled nursing care,<br />
short-term rehabilitation, hospice care and<br />
a specialized Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care<br />
Unit. “Our facility’s objective is to provide<br />
senior healthcare services in a new and<br />
better way,” said Executive Director, Tommy<br />
Herndon. The facility’s Golden Living<br />
Orthopedic Center <strong>of</strong> Excellence <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
physical, occupational, and speech therapy<br />
for those recovering from, stroke, joint<br />
replacement surgery, illness, or injury.<br />
Herndon said the LivingCenter provides<br />

state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art clinical care in an environment that addresses<br />
the emotional and social needs <strong>of</strong> patients and their families,<br />
and focuses on enriching their quality <strong>of</strong> life. “We call it the<br />

but with a passion that embraces innovation and new<br />
technologies.” Some <strong>of</strong> that technology involves the use <strong>of</strong><br />
ultra sound and electrical stimulation equipment for pain<br />
management and improved range <strong>of</strong> motion and the use <strong>of</strong><br />
specially engineered Nautilus workout machines designed to<br />
provide ease <strong>of</strong> access and strength building for senior users.<br />
In operation since 1966, Golden LivingCenter–Foley is a<br />
154-bed Skilled Nursing Facility participating in most<br />
insurance health plans including Medicare, Medicaid, and<br />
most HMOs, PPOs, and private insurers.<br />
Robertsdale<br />
Health Care Center<br />
Opened in 2000 and expanded in 2008, Robertsdale Health<br />
Care Center is growing again, with a new wing devoted to<br />
short-term rehabilitation expected to open in spring 2013, said<br />
Mary Kay Polys, administrator. “Approximately twenty-five<br />
percent <strong>of</strong> our population is here for short-term rehabilitation,<br />
so we are excited to expand our services in this area.”<br />

In addition to rehab, the facility features the<br />
20-bed secure Ludke Unit for memory care<br />
and a Medical Specialty Unit for acute care,<br />
plus physical and occupational therapy, speech<br />
pathology, and other services. “We are very<br />
proud <strong>of</strong> our extensive medical staff, led by<br />
Medical Director Dr. Joseph Steele who visits<br />
twice a day on weekdays. In addition, we have<br />
other physicians who visit regularly, and we<br />
have a full-time respiratory therapist on staff,<br />
all <strong>of</strong> whom complement the rest <strong>of</strong> our<br />
nursing staff.”<br />
Many residents <strong>of</strong> Robertsdale Health Care<br />
Center are very active in regularly scheduled<br />
activities and clubs, Polys said. “We have<br />
women’s Red Hat group, morning and afternoon activities that<br />
might include trips to places like Gulf Shores or the Fairhope<br />
Pier.”<br />
Montrose Bay<br />
Health Care<br />
Located in a residential neighborhood on the Eastern Shore<br />
between Fairhope and Daphne, Montrose Bay Health Care has<br />
been in operation for more than 20 years. Now managed by<br />
Sava Senior Care, the facility has undergone a lot <strong>of</strong> upgrades<br />
in recent years, said Administrator Wayne Cole, who has been<br />
onboard for three years. “This generation expects quality, and<br />
that’s what we <strong>of</strong>fer in everything we do.”<br />
Montrose Bay has a 5-Star rating from CMS and Medicare,<br />
Cole noted. “In addition, we won a Bronze Quality Award from<br />
the American Health Care Association last year, and for the past<br />
two years, we’ve been rated 100% on our customer satisfaction<br />
surveys. That’s what is important. Sava is service-driven; we take<br />
good care <strong>of</strong> our employees and they, in turn, take good care <strong>of</strong><br />
our residents.”<br />
The facility includes four new private suites that can<br />
accommodate family members for patients receiving hospice<br />
care or under other circumstances.<br />
“We’re a family. Some <strong>of</strong> our residents have been here for<br />
years, including some non-traditional residents: turtles. We<br />
have a turtle haven for rescued turtles in our courtyard, and<br />
our residents love this.”<br />

but the best for the school and the students. With that kind<br />
<strong>of</strong> community support, plus amazing teachers and staff who<br />
are willing to work as hard as they can for the kids, truly,<br />
the sky’s the limit for what we can accomplish here.”<br />
As principal, Ross wants to take the school to its greatest<br />
potential. “There’s no reason this can’t be the best high<br />
school in <strong>Baldwin</strong> County. My goal is first to ensure that<br />
every student graduates. In this competitive world, they<br />
need that diploma. But I also want to make certain that<br />
they have the skills and the confidence to go beyond<br />
high school, to pursue some type <strong>of</strong> post high school<br />
education—college or trade school—or start their own<br />
business if that’s what they want to do.”<br />

To accomplish these goals, Ross<br />
envisions special career academies at<br />
RHS. “Students who are interested in<br />
forestry, engineering, the medical<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession, technology, hospitality, or<br />
whatever, will have a curriculum that<br />
gives them direction. I want them to see<br />
the reason they are in particular classes<br />
and understand how they will use this<br />
education beyond high school. And more<br />
than that, I want them to be confident<br />
that they can succeed in whatever they<br />
choose to do.”<br />

unlimited potential at RHS. In addition,<br />
he views his new position at the school as<br />
a chance to help his own community.<br />
“This is where I live; I’ve been here<br />
since 1995, and I want these kids to<br />
have the same opportunities as any other<br />
child in <strong>Baldwin</strong> County to be winners.<br />
I think it’s the right time to build this<br />
program here.”<br />
Building the football program will be<br />
a challenge, Campbell admitted. “It’s<br />
important that we increase our strength<br />
and speed to be able to compete in 6A<br />
football. We want to make sure that<br />
everyone in our city leagues, middle<br />
schools, freshman teams, and varsity has<br />
the opportunity and the available tools to<br />
make them successful. Our goal is to get<br />
better each and every week—and then,<br />
to make the play<strong>of</strong>fs.”<br />
Campbell thinks the program has the<br />
potential to be one <strong>of</strong> the best in the<br />
county. “That’s our goal, and that is<br />
going to take a lot <strong>of</strong> hard work from<br />
everyone associated with this program,<br />
including players, parents, coaches, and<br />
our community.”<br />
Campbell agrees with Ross that kids<br />
need to know that they can accomplish<br />
anything. “You’ve just got to show them<br />
you care, and show them they can be<br />
successful.”<br />

When Acie Campbell, zone manager<br />
for Coca Cola Bottling Company,<br />
Consolidated, started work at the<br />
Robertsdale facility in 1985, the<br />
warehouse was nothing more than a<br />
little Quonset hut. “Now we’ve got<br />
around 100,000 square feet <strong>of</strong><br />
warehouse and <strong>of</strong>fice space, so we’ve<br />
definitely seen growth in <strong>Central</strong><br />
<strong>Baldwin</strong> County.”<br />
In the 1980s, the warehouse was one<br />
<strong>of</strong> several in <strong>Baldwin</strong> County that<br />
supplied Coca-Cola products in 6.5<br />
ounce glass bottles and “King Size” 10<br />
ounce bottles. “Now we carry many<br />
different brands and many different<br />
sizes <strong>of</strong> each, including energy drinks,<br />
vitamin water, Minute Maid juices, and<br />
more. And we service almost all <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Baldwin</strong> County, from Little River to<br />
Orange Beach. It’s very convenient from<br />
this location—that’s why they call<br />
Robertsdale the Hub City.”<br />
Campbell said they distribute around<br />
2.5 million cases a year. “Our biggest<br />
sellers are still the carbonated s<strong>of</strong>t<br />
drinks, but alternative drinks—the<br />
energy drinks, vitamin water and<br />
such—are trending up.”<br />
Working with chambers <strong>of</strong> commerce<br />
throughout the region, Campbell sees<br />
how the organizations work for the<br />
betterment <strong>of</strong> the whole community.<br />
“Like all chambers, the <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Baldwin</strong><br />
<strong>Chamber</strong> has the community at heart.<br />
Of course they support the businesses in<br />
our area, but they bring value to the<br />
public as well. We try to do that with<br />
our business too. Our mission is to<br />
honor God in all that we do and to be<br />
involved in the community. That goes<br />
hand in hand.”<br />

Johnny Shaw, sales manager for<br />
Budweiser-Busch Distributing, says the<br />
family-owned business has seen a lot <strong>of</strong><br />
growth in its 44 years on the south side<br />
<strong>of</strong> Loxley. “I’ve been with the company<br />
for 36 years, and in my time here, we’ve<br />
added on several times and more than<br />
doubled in size. We now have about<br />
30,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> environmentally<br />
controlled storage space.”<br />
The location is perfect for growth,<br />
Shaw said. “We’ve got the beach and the<br />
interstate. We count on people coming<br />
to <strong>Baldwin</strong> County, but the locals<br />
are great. Over the years, we’ve all gone<br />
through challenges—hurricanes, and<br />
growth challenges—but the people<br />
here in central <strong>Baldwin</strong> always rise to<br />
the occasion.”<br />
As the only beer wholesaler in<br />
<strong>Baldwin</strong> County, the company<br />
distributes more than two million cases<br />
and thousands <strong>of</strong> kegs to more than<br />
650 accounts in <strong>Baldwin</strong>, Escambia,<br />
and Conecuh counties plus the city<br />
<strong>of</strong> Monroeville.<br />
The future looks bright, Shaw says.<br />
“Everything is evolving, but business is<br />
good. We run 14 delivery routes with<br />
10 sales people and about 60 employees<br />
at the plant. We distribute Budweiser<br />
and Busch beers, plus water, micro<br />
brews, and imports. And we’ve just<br />
acquired a wine license, so we’re going<br />
to add that.”<br />
Shaw says the company enjoys being a<br />
part <strong>of</strong> the community. “We help with<br />
everything that we can, locally and<br />
through corporate sponsorships. People<br />
here are wonderful to work with, and<br />
we like doing what we can to add to<br />
the community.”<br />

invest in a home in <strong>Baldwin</strong> County. The prices are good, the<br />

see the market starting to improve,” said<br />

Mississippi. Right now especially, the<br />
prices are fantastic and our quality is<br />
always great. We pride ourselves on our<br />
service. We perform two walk-throughs<br />
with the customer prior to closing, and<br />
we come back after one year and perform<br />
another walk-through. People really<br />
appreciate that.”<br />
Sturma Builders<br />
John Sturma has been building homes<br />
for 41 years and is used to dealing with<br />
market fluctuations, he says. “This<br />
remains a great place to buy and build,<br />
and <strong>of</strong> course prices and interest rates are<br />
really good now.”<br />
In 1969, John and his wife, Dolores,<br />
built their home in Robertsdale, doing<br />
all the work. “We decided to go into the<br />
business, and since then, we’ve built<br />
approximately 150 new homes here in<br />
<strong>Baldwin</strong> County, working with our<br />
clients through the whole process—from<br />
drawing plans, to securing a lot, building<br />
the house, and helping them move in.<br />
We are a custom homebuilder and will<br />
build any size and any style home a client<br />
may want.”<br />
Sturma says he’s seen many changes<br />
in central <strong>Baldwin</strong> County since he built<br />
his first house. “It was very rural back<br />
then <strong>of</strong> course, but people have always<br />
wanted to live here for our beaches, our<br />
access to Mobile and Pensacola, and our<br />
good weather that lets you enjoy the<br />
outdoors all year long. This area is really<br />
growing, but it’s still an easy place to<br />
live with good schools, good homes,<br />

Murphy is completing his fifth<br />
term as Mayor and 24 years <strong>of</strong> service to<br />
the City <strong>of</strong> Robertsdale.<br />
“To me, the greatest reward in <strong>of</strong>fice is<br />
helping others, and with the assistance <strong>of</strong><br />
city administration, we’ve accomplished<br />
a lot. We had a 39% jump in population<br />
in 2010 and are now a younger<br />
community than when I started, and<br />
we’re better prepared to give others the<br />
opportunity to call Robertsdale home.<br />
We have done well with upgrades to<br />
our utility system, enhanced our park<br />
facilities, remodeled and constructed new<br />
city structures, maintained a low crime<br />
rate, and achieved these improvements<br />
with a balanced operating budget. I think<br />
that we’re on a positive path, which will<br />
create jobs and the desire for others to<br />
live here. With all these attributes, we<br />
will only prosper in the coming years.”<br />

is completing his sixth term as Mayor<br />

“I’ve spent my whole life here except<br />
for four years in the Marines. It’s an<br />

operates without any problems and that<br />

digital renaissance"<br />
Arrives in <strong>Baldwin</strong> County<br />
Technology meets us at every turn—whether it’s at the car dealership where a computer helps<br />
to figure out why our vehicle is sputtering or at the local medical clinic where digital tools<br />
enable our physician to quickly render a diagnosis. Without question, smart phones and<br />
various “i” devices, empowered by the World Wide Web, have radically changed how we live.<br />
Turning out graduates that can<br />
successfully compete on a global<br />
level in a digitally connected world has<br />
never been more vital or challenging for<br />
school districts. That’s the reason that<br />
Alan T. Lee, superintendent for <strong>Baldwin</strong><br />
County Public Schools, launched what<br />
he describes as the “Digital Renaissance”<br />
which will place an Apple Mac Book Air<br />
laptop computer in the hands <strong>of</strong> every<br />
high school teacher and student in<br />
August 2012. The initiative will also<br />
empower teachers to transition to<br />
challenge-based learning which ensures<br />
a 21st Century classroom experience.<br />
“Employers expect graduates today<br />
to be able to problem solve, effectively<br />
work in teams, to communicate and<br />
create,” said Dr. Lee. “<strong>Baldwin</strong> County<br />
Public Schools’ Digital Renaissance is<br />
designed to bring our classrooms into<br />

the 21st Century so that students<br />
graduate, empowered with the skills that<br />
employers are demanding in the global<br />
economy.”<br />
The Digital Renaissance began at<br />
<strong>Baldwin</strong> County High School in Bay<br />
Minette in August 2011. Lee says the<br />
results have been impressive. “Test<br />
scores are up. Teachers report that<br />
students are engaged like never before<br />
and discipline referrals to the <strong>of</strong>fice are<br />
down by 70 percent. Similar results are<br />
echoed by districts in other parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />
country where the 1:1 laptop initiative<br />
(one computer for every student) has<br />
been implemented.”<br />
In August 2012, the digital initiative<br />
expands to the county’s other six high<br />
schools, and at Robertsdale High<br />
School, Principal Craig Ross says the<br />
Digital Renaissance will provide great<br />
opportunities.<br />
“I was a principal in Auburn when<br />
the school system there brought in<br />
laptops, and it changed everything.<br />
Teachers and schools were finally<br />
speaking the language <strong>of</strong> the millennium<br />
generation. Most classrooms today<br />
do not look any different today than<br />
they did when I was in school, and yet<br />
the world is completely different.<br />
Laptops open up the world. They<br />
completely change the way students<br />
learn, and that’s what we need.”<br />
The <strong>Baldwin</strong> County Public School<br />
System is one <strong>of</strong> 35 school districts that<br />
are part <strong>of</strong> the elite League <strong>of</strong> Innovative<br />
Schools, an alliance that is committed to<br />
raising student achievement. The<br />
League was launched in partnership<br />
with the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Education<br />
and with Digital Promise, a new<br />
national center created by Congress to<br />
advance breakthroughs in education<br />
with technology. Digital Promise is part<br />
<strong>of</strong> the administration’s broader agenda<br />
to spur innovation in education and<br />
prepare students for the challenges <strong>of</strong> a<br />
21st century economy.<br />
“Time and again, <strong>Baldwin</strong> county<br />
residents have expressed the desire to<br />
have world-class schools,” Dr. Lee<br />
noted. “Our communities have stepped<br />
up to support schools in the toughest <strong>of</strong><br />
economic times with the expectation<br />
that our classrooms be the best that they<br />
can possibly be. Are we world-class yet<br />
No, but with Digital Renaissance<br />
and the continued support <strong>of</strong> our<br />
outstanding residents, we’re on the path<br />

<strong>Baldwin</strong> County Public Schools<br />
serve more than 29,000 students on 44<br />
campuses. The school district has grown<br />
by more than 27% over the past 10<br />
years. A recent audit by the Public<br />
Affairs Research Council <strong>of</strong> Alabama<br />
showed that the school system is one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the most efficient in the state.<br />
