ASSIGNMENT FOR EXTRA EVALUATION<br />
If you wish to complete an extra project for evaluation, and your instructor agrees,<br />
you may wish to try one of the following.<br />
1. Find a poem you like; prepare copies to share with your<br />
instructor or fellow students.<br />
* Read the poem aloud.<br />
* Paraphrase the poem.<br />
* Explain what the poem means (theme) to you.<br />
* What is your response to the poem Why did you choose it<br />
* Talk about the literary devices you found in the poem and<br />
how they work to increase the effectiveness of the<br />
message, if applicable.<br />
2. Collect several poems by the same poet. Do you notice<br />
common themes in his/her poetry Do you like this poet’s<br />
work Why Find out about the poet’s life (biography) and<br />
prepare a brief summary of it. How can you relate (connect)<br />
the poet’s life to the poetry<br />
3. Collect several poems on the same theme. Some popular<br />
themes in poetry are love, death, war, nature, religion.<br />
Compare the way that different poets approach the same<br />
theme. Which ones do you prefer Why<br />
4. Collect several poems by modern Canadian poets. Write a<br />
brief commentary on each one (one or two paragraphs). Do<br />
you think that the poets have anything special to say about the<br />
Canadian way of life What details (theme, language, images,<br />
etc.) do the poems include which are specifically Canadian
