Preserving the Lands We Love
Welcome back to the table!
Friends of the Door County Land Trust are
pleased to once again invite you to a series of events
that has become a well-loved and much-anticipated part of summer in Door
County for the land preservation community. Dining for Open Spaces returns for
its 6th season with as many exciting events as ever! You’ll find within these pages
everything from a gourmet pudgie pie cookout under the stars to a lighthouse
picnic on Chambers Island to Appalachian cuisine and folk tales. We know that
you’ll enjoy reading about this year’s slate of events; choosing from among them,
however, will not be easy. Will you bike the back roads of northern Door, treat
yourself to a “localvore” feast, or visit the Kellner Fen, one of Door County’s hidden
treasures Whichever event you choose, rest assured it will be accompanied
by great food and company!
Since its debut six years ago, the Dining for Open Spaces series has raised over
$125,000 for land protection in Door County. In honor of this accomplishment,
we propose a toast – to all of you, to the Land Trust itself (may it outlive all of
us!), and, most especially, to the hosts, co-hosts and hike leaders who generously
donate their time, talent and treasures to the Dining for Open Spaces series. We
also thank our hardworking Dining for Open Spaces committee and our sponsors
(please see back cover.) The generosity of all of these folks ensures that all proceeds
go directly to preserving the lands we love in Door County!
We wish you a pleasant summer and hope to see you at one of these events or
out at one of our Nature Preserves. We also look forward to the land preservation
successes we’ll celebrate together. After all, when the last dish is washed and
put away, that’s what it’s all about!
Bon Appétit, All!
Reservations will be accepted as they are received by mail only. (See the
registration form provided.) We recommend you reply quickly. You will
receive a mailed confirmation of your reservation and detailed directions to
the hosts’ property soon after we receive your reservation. Details are subject
to change, and we will keep you informed of any significant changes.
Most events include a short hike or an outing. Please dress casually and
wear appropriate footgear. If you would like to attend the meal but not the
hike or outing, please make note of this on the registration form.
Thank you to Cal Bonnivier for providing “Prairie Wildflowers” for the cover of Dining for Open Spaces.
See the inside back cover for information about entering your name in a drawing to win this beautiful painting.
Thank you, Cal!

Bring Home the Beauty of Door County!
Prairie Wildflowers Raffle Tickets Enclosed
Cal Bonnivier is the creator of Prairie Wildflowers, the beautiful painting which
graces the cover of our 2009 Dining for Open Spaces invitation booklet. Born in
Chicago, Cal moved to the “quiet side” of Door County to be closer to the nature she
loves. Though she has traveled widely and sketched and painted all over Europe, the
Bahamas, Hawaii, and most of the United States, she continually returns to her favorite
subjects, the tranquil views of small towns, lake, and woods and the wildflowers and
weeds of the Midwest, as seen on our cover.
Most of Cal’s techniques are innovative and self-taught, though she is degreed and
has studied art for years. Her unique methods include the use of oil pastel and oil on
rag or rice paper with elements of collage. She also uses monoprinting, stencils and
brayers to give a print-like appearance to her work.
Cal has generously donated the framed, 29”x 35” Prairie Wildflowers to be raffled off
to benefit the land protection work of the Land Trust.
But, you can’t win unless you enter!
Return the stubs from the enclosed raffle tickets to have your name entered in the drawing.
Suggested donation is $10 per entry or $50 for six entries. (Please note: No donation
is required to enter.) Every dollar donated through raffle entries benefits land preservation
in Door County. You may enclose your ticket stubs and optional donation with your
Dining for Open Spaces registration form or send separately. (See the shaded box at the
bottom of the form.) Raffle tickets are also available all summer at the
Sturgeon Bay Land Trust office – call or visit at 920.746.1359; 23 N. Fifth Avenue.
The drawing will be at the Land Trust’s Annual Member Gathering
on Sunday, August 9. You need not be present to win.
Thank you, Cal, for donating this beautiful painting
to benefit land preservation in Door County!
