NOTES / MINUTES…OF THE WESTERN PROVINCE RUGBY FOOTBALL REFEREES SOCIETY MONTHLY
MEETING OF REFEREES HELD ON THURSDAY 2 AUGUST 2012 AT 19H00 IN THE BOARDROOM
NEWLANDS GRANDSTAND BOUNDARY ROAD NEWLANDS
1. WELCOME
• The Chairman thanked all members for attending this monthly meeting of Rugby Referees
• A Special word of welcome was extended to: Immediate past Chairman of the Rugby
Football Referee Society: Mr Dennis Immelman and immediate past Chairman and Deputy
Chairman South African Rugby Referee Society(SARRA): Mr Douglas Holwill
• Referee Joey Salmans to address members on the subject: How to be a Referee on the field
with communication
2. PRESENT

3. APOLOGIES
• The following persons have tabled their apologies: Arthur Southgate; Ronnie Bourbon-
Leftley; Allan Gould; Redwaan Basheer; Cassiem Orrie; Don Perry; Jacques de Wit; Ashraf

4. IN MEMORIAM
• All members were asked to stand a minute silence for the following members of the Referee
Society who had recently passed away:
Herman Pretorius…a major sponsor of the Western Province Rugby Football Referee Society
Mr. Plaatjies; from Eastern Province, a SARRA member
5. NEW MEMBERS
• NIL

6. APPOINTMENTS AND DISCIPLINARY MATTERS
• A meeting for various rugby clubs was recently convened but only x4 rugby clubs attended
the meeting
• Various referees arrive late for matches. This means the matches run late and / or short
time is played
• The Executive Committee is aware of the names of Third Team Referees who do not stay to
do assistant referee duties for the First Team Match
• To date x20 Referees have withdrawn for this coming Saturdays round of Club Rugby
Fixtures…Saturday 4 August 2012
• Referees not arriving at their officially appointed matches have been dealt with
• Referees who have formally resigned from the Western Province Rugby Football Referee
Society with regard to refereeing rugby matches, but, who now wish to take up refereeing
once more, must, work through Mr Ben Theron in the Administration Office
7. BLACK TIE DINNER---WESTERN PRONCE RUGBY FOOTBALL REFEREE SOCIETY
• The dinner will be held at the Protea Hotel Techno Park Stellenbosch…Thursday 16 August
2012
• A form was distributed to members in order to obtain guests to attend this Dinner
8. SA RUGBY APPOINTMENTS
• The SA Rugby Appointments for the coming weeks were communicated to members
• Quinton Immelman; has been appointed to Referee the Inter Schools Rugby Match between
Paarl Boys High School and Paarl Gymnasium High School on Saturday 4 August 2012 at
Faure Street Paarl
9. JOEY SALMANS: REFEREE COMMUNICATION ON THE RUGBY FIELD
• Referee Joey Salmans addressed members in the art of: Rugby Refereeing Communication,
with players, during a match
• The way a Referee communicates on the field with players during the course of a match, can
make the game or destroy it; as far as rugby referees are concerned
• Referees must be aware at all times what is happening on the rugby field
• Referees should talk less and should exert authority on the field of play through judicious
use of the whistle

The Committee acknowledges the superb quality of the rendered minutes / notes and, thanks
Alan Becker for continuing to volunteer his time and expertise in this regard.
With no further business to discuss the Chairman closed the meeting at 20H18
The Next Monthly Meeting… of the Western Province Rugby Football Referees Society…will be
convened on …Thursday 6 September 2012 at 19H00…Newlands Grand Stand Boundary Road
Newlands.
