Comments of Mr. Aparicio
He had no comments.
Comments of Mr. Gardiner
He was not present at this meeting.
Comments of Ms. Sullivan
Stated she attended the Evergreen and Laurel
Back to School nights. She also went to Scott
Avenue and Ceres where she went through the
classrooms.
She attended the Ceres PTA spaghetti dinner
fundraiser. Said if the schools let her know, she
will do her best to attend.
Comments of Mr. Urteaga
He had no comments.
Comments of Mr. Elbling
Stated he attended the LACSTA dinner event
where Tom Torlakson was the speaker. Said
Torlakson tried to be reassuring and said he
will be working with the legislators.
He attended the Teacher of the Year
luncheon. Said he was pleased that Mr.
Tighe is one of the Sweet 16 finalists along
with teachers from Whittier Union and La
Mirada.
ASSOCIATION COMMENTS
Comments of CSEA
They had no comments.
Comments of EWEA
Dan Parsons, president, said it is always a
pleasure to see events where teachers are
recognized. Said he heard about QEIA and
that Evergreen was in the top 10% and he is
very proud of their accomplishment.
Stated he had the opportunity to meet with the
bargaining team and he’s looking forward to
working through issues to craft a new
contract.
SUPERINTENDENT’S
COMMENTS
Informed the Board that the District was
investigating solar and are in the initial stages
of preparing a proposal. The company’s
figures show a $27 million savings over 25
years, starting at a $900,000 savings for the
first year. This proposal has the backing of
QZAB funding and there would be no out-ofpocket
expenses. Said we may look at other
companies, but will have a proposal for the
Board within a short time.
Said the enrollment for the first month of
school is up 137 students in general ed and up
152 students total with special education.
General ed is 9,039 and 9,103 including
special ed, which is very helpful.
Stated that he read an article recognizing
Sanger Unified School District who in 2005
had a 702 API score and grew 113 points to
815 in 2011. Over that same period, our
District grew the same 113 points from 730 -
843. Said this is a huge amount of growth.
Commented that the Board may have read
about exclusions of students for not having
the Pertussis vaccinations. Said exclusions
would be 30 days from the student’s start in
school, which would be an October 7 th
deadline. Stated that in reality, our District
will not begin excluding students on that date,
but will be writing up guidelines for the
schools and will make it as easy as possible.
Currently, there are approximately 115
th
students in 7 grade that do not have the
vaccination. Said this is a small group, but
we don’t want anyone excluded. He will give
more details at the next meeting. Stated that
any absences for this can be made up for
during Saturday school.

p.m. No one spoke to this issue and the
hearing closed at 7:10 p.m.

The public hearing on the District counter
proposal to the California School Employees
Association, Chapter #87, proposals for a
successor agreement opened at 7:10 p.m. No
one spoke to this issue and the hearing closed
at 7:11 p.m.
DISCUSSION OF DISTRICT GOALS
A discussion of the District Goals was held.
There were no suggested changes and they
will be brought back for approval on October
10, 2011.
ADOPTION OF BP 5131,
CONDUCT
It was moved by Ms. Sullivan, seconded by
Mr. Aparicio and voted unanimously by those
present to adopt BP 5131, Conduct and to
add the word “substantial” back into the
policy on page 6, first paragraph, first
sentence.
