It is rare in the world of college basketball 

that an opponent looks forward to playing a 

game on the road more than at home. But for 

the opponents of the Harding Lady Bisons, a trip 

to the Rhodes Field House is often the highlight 

of their season. Home of the famous Rhodes 

Rowdies, Harding’s Rhodes Field House is one 

of the premier basketball arenas in the South. 

Bison fans regularly pack the facility and hold five 

of the top 10 single-game attendance marks in 

Gulf South Conference history despite only six 

years in the league. Last season, Harding ranked 

second in the GSC and 24th in NCAA II. 

The Rhodes Fieldhouse contains modern, 

well-equipped dressing rooms for the Bisons, 

Lady Bisons and visiting teams and officials. A 

suite of offices serves four coaches, secretarial 

staff, and intramurals. Approximately sixty percent 

of the 3,000 seats are permanent and chair 

back seats and reserved seating are available on 

the west side. The floor level seats are retractable 

which allow space for the two cross courts. 

Those courts are utilized for both intercollegiate 

practice and intramural games. As the home for 

Lady Bison volleyball, there is a primary court 

that seats the maximum number of fans and 

with the floor level seats retracted, there are 

two additional courts available for intramural 

play. Additional rooms for weight training and 

laundry equipment are built into the facility. 

Rhodes Fieldhouse was home court for the 

basketball Bisons from 1957 until 1976, when the 

Ganus Athletic Center opened. The Ganus Athletic 

Center served both teams for twenty-one 

years until the Rhodes was renovated in 1997. 

The World War II airplane hanger that became 

Rhodes Fieldhouse was designed and made for 

an airfield in France and bought as war surplus 

by Dr. George Benson. It was erected on the 

campus in 1949 for $124,000. At the time, Rhodes 

was a coach’s dream that produced a real home 

court advantage. It replaced the original campus 

gym better known as the “crackerbox gym.” 

This original campus gym was small enough to 

fit inside a regulation basketball court. In the 

early years, Rhodes was usually packed and loud 

which gave it a “big time” atmosphere. For a 

growing student body of 600 plus, it was not only 

adequate, it was super. There were no athletic 

teams at Harding, only classes, intramural and 

“free play” occupied Rhodes Memorial. In 1952, 

Harding Academy started boys basketball and in 

1957, the Bisons began playing intercollegiate 

games and the student body continued to grow. 

By the late 1960’s, Rhodes was inadequate and 

the Ganus Center was planned. 

In the early 1990’s, Harding’s enrollment 

passed the 4,000 mark. Harding Academy moved 

into its own new Harris Gym but continued intramural 

and free play demands prompted President 

Burks and the administration to make decisions

relative to space needs. Rhodes was and is a 

campus landmark that holds special memories 

for many so tearing it down and rebuilding met 

opposition. 

Since the Ganus Center is an ideal intramural 

facility, the decision was made to renovate 

Rhodes for intercollegiate basketball and volleyball. 

It also serves as an intramural game gymnasium 

while the bulk 

of intramurals and 

free play was moved 

to the Ganus Athletic 

Center. 

B.F. Rhodes will continue 

to be honored. 

A founding faculty 

member in 1924, the 

former history professor 

died in 1947. Rhodes was a popular 

figure around campus and a man who was very 

interested in all student activities. He was frequently 

seen at campus athletic activities, always 

encouraging the participants.

Established in 1924 as a liberal arts college, 

Harding University, with an enrollment of 

more than 5,900, has grown into the largest 

private institution of higher learning in Arkansas. 

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission 

and a member of the North Central Association, 

Harding attained university status on August 17, 

1979. 

Today the university operates through six 

divisions: the College of Bible and Religion, the 

College of Arts and Humanities, the College of 

Business Administration, the College of Education, 

the College of Nursing and the College of Sciences. 

More than 90 majors are offered in pursuit of 

ten baccalaureate degrees including bachelor 

of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of business 

administration, bachelor of social work, bachelor

the Master of Science in Marriage and Family 

Therapy, the Master of Business Administration, 

the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies,

Science in Mental Health Counseling, the Master 

of Arts in Teaching, Educational Specialist degree 

in educational leadership, the Master of Divinity, 

Doctor of Ministry, Educational Doctorate and 

Physician Assistant Studies. 

The 26-member board of trustees approved a 

$75.3 million budget for the 2005-06 operating 

year. The school assets now total $265 million. 


The administration, faculty and staff are united 

in maintaining and improving Harding’s purpose 

and goals. Leading campus activities is President 

David B. Burks, a 1965 alumnus who became chief 

executive officer in May 1987. In Arkansas, Harding 

is acknowledged as a leader in higher education, 

business, nursing and liberal arts. Its American 

Studies Institute and lecture series have received 

national acclaim from the Freedoms Foundation of 

Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Situated on a 200-acre 

campus, the university is located in Searcy, Arkansas 

(population 20,000), an industrial and trading 

center 50 miles northeast of Little Rock and 105 

miles west of Memphis, Tennessee. Athletics play a 

vital role in campus life, and Harding’s facilities are 

among the finest in the South. The Clifton L. Ganus 

Jr. Athletic Center, completed in 1976, serves as 

the hub of the athletic program. The 82,000 square 

foot structure houses offices, classrooms, locker 

rooms, a 25-yard natatorium, a gymnastics room, 

a weight room, handball-racquetball courts and a 

5,200 seat gymnasium with Pro-Turf surfacing and 

an indoor track. 

Adjacent to the Athletic Center is the 5,000 

capacity newly remodeled First Security Stadium, 

which is encircled by the Ted Lloyd Track, a 400 

meter, nine-lane latex track. South of the Athletic 

Center is the Jerry Moore Memorial Baseball 

Field, a lighted, grass-surfaced park that is regarded 

as one of the best in the state. East of the field 

are 12 tennis courts, intramural fields, and a golf 

practice area with a driving range and putting 

greens. Rhodes Field House (3,000) has been 

extensively remodeled and became the home for 

the intercollegiate basketball and volleyball teams 

in 1997.

Credentials for Harding home basketball games are 

issued for working media only and should be requested 

as early as possible. Requests should be made to Harding 

Sports Information Director Scott Goode, Harding 

University, Box 12281, Searcy, Arkansas 72149-0001, or 

(501) 279-4760. Passes will be held at the pass table 

in the lobby of Rhodes Field House. 

Media Services--Harding University will supply 

lineups of both teams, current cumulative Harding 

and opponent statistics, and halftime and final game 

statistics. Copies of the final statistics will be available 

immediately after the game. 

Phone Access--All print media will have access 

to phone lines immediately following the game. Check 

with the Sports Information Director for location of 

phones and calling codes for the University phone 

system. 

Photographers--The photography zones on the 

floor are not marked, but photographers should stay at 

least four feet from the end lines. Photographers are 

requested to seat themselves on the right sides of the 

baskets. Flash photography is allowed during games. 

Player Interviews--Media are encouraged to 

interview players. The best time to interview players 

is from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. daily. Please arrange lengthy, 

feature-type interviews through the sports information 

office. 

Post-Game Interviews--Harding players and 

coaches will be available for interviews after each game. 

Media are encouraged to wait 10 minutes after the game 

before interviewing coach Tim Kirby or the players. The 

visiting coach will be available if he agrees. 

Press Row--There is limited seating on press row, 

and preference is given to the home and visiting teams’ 

statistics personnel. Access to press row accomodations 

is on a first come, first served basis. To assure seating 

on press row, media are strongly encouraged to contact 

the sports information office at least two days prior to 

the game. 

Radio Broadcasts--Two courtesy lines are available 

to visiting radio stations. The officially designated 

visiting station will be given preference. Check with the 

sports information office for courtesy line number. All 

other stations must make their own arrangements for 

phone lines through the sports information office.
