A fantastic Saturday for the “Mighty Ranga” last weekend with three of our teams advancing
through to Finals. Our Premier Reserves and Under 21s will be playing in the Championship
Finals in their respective grades. While the Premiers get the chance to defend the
Jubilee Trophy they won last year.
The Premiers faced College Rifles and produced a superb first half running in four tries. While
first five Tony Fenner kicked 6 from 6 to help Pakuranga race to a 34-7 halftime lead.
The second half saw College Rifles launch a comeback but they came up short losing 39-31.
Those Premier Reserves put in a clinical display against College Rifles in the Championship Semi
Final winning comfortably 31-13. First five Gareth Arlidge was a stand out as he scored 26
points and controlled the game from start to finish.
Our Under 21s showed huge heart as they came back from 12-0 down inside the first 10 minutes
to beat College Rifles 18-12 in the Championship Semi Final. The boys showed some steel
in defence as their line was under attack for long periods of the game but Rifles couldn't find a
way through. The forwards laid the platform for the game with some strong runs and big hits
on defence.
Lastly but not least our Under 19s couldn’t match the size and strength of Marist going down
51-11. However this reporter would put money on the fact that not all the Marist players were
under the age of 19! The boys never gave up and in the final 20 minutes they dominated
Marist collecting their sole try on the final play of the game.
The Under 19s finished inside the top four and its a testament to the teams character. They
weren't the biggest team but played for each other and produced many gusty wins. Many Club
members can be proud with the way this young team represented Pakuranga!
Our Under 85kg teams all suffered losses. The Pythons were out classed 31-18 by the
undefeated College Rifles Raiders. The Rattlers were thumped 51-5 by the Varsity Shooters.
While the Cobras had the game stolen from them 25-21 by the Marist Old Boys.
And those Presidents suffered their first loss of the season going down to Eden Exclusive 40-25
thanks in part to the backs not showing up or so I was told by a forward...
