Purge Option
Purge Layout
The Purge option is available on DRY-O-TRON® DS/RS
models size 040 and larger. This option has all the
benefits of an Economizer-type design without the disadvantages
of higher initial or fan operating costs
associated with Economizer designs. In fact, the Purge
option also benefits from having a return air plenum. For
the engineer, this means a simplified return duct design.
Natatoriums are Thermal Flywheels
The energy a pool loses through
evaporation represents approximately
95% of its annual water-heating requirement.
The DRY-O-TRON® captures
this heat as a byproduct of the
dehumidification process. Whenever
possible, this ‘free heat’ should be
used to heat the pool water and take
advantage of the thermal flywheel
for the most efficient operation. See
page 15 in our Indoor Pool Design
and Dehumidification brochure for
an estimate of the annual savings
due to pool water heating with our
DS/RS and DB/RB Series.
If job site restrictions make it impractical
or impossible to run pool
water piping to the DRY-O-TRON®,
then the DA5/RA5/DV5 Series is the
series of choice. It is identical to the
DS/RS/DSV Series except that it does
not have a pool water heater. Since
the pool water heater acts as a zero
reheat mode (air in temperature = air
out temperature) in the DS/RS/DSV
Series, we have made this desirable
feature available as an option on the
DA5/RA5/DV5 Series models already
equipped with the air conditioning
option. This sequence allows the
DRY-O-TRON® to supply neutral air
(no temperature rise) while in the
deadband (no call for space heating
or cooling).
4 ENERGY RECYCLING DEHUMIDIFIERS & POOL WATER HEATERS FOR NATATORIUMS

Natatorium
Standard Design Features
Double-Wall Pool Water Heater
All pool water heating DRY-O-TRON®
units are equipped with a coaxial,
counterflow, cupro-nickel, vented,
self-draining refrigerant condenser
which is suitable for potable water
applications. Cross-contamination prevention
is ensured.
HyPoxy ® Coated Coils
This standard coating for all air-side
coils on pool applications provides
superior corrosion protection while
enhancing the performance of the coil
due to its hydrophilic properties.
Water Smart Mode
Allows the DRY-O-TRON® to continue
to run in the event of a loss of pool
water flow in order to satisfy space
temperature and relative humidity
demands.
Inverter Rated Insulation
System Fan Motors
These high-efficiency fan motors have
a superior insulation system for
excellent spike-resistance and moisture
resistance.
Oversized Evaporator Coil
With 10 fins per inch, this deep and
dense coil extracts the maximum
amount of latent energy with the least
amount of compressor power consumption,
giving the DRY-O-TRON®
the industry’s best Moisture Removal
Efficiency (MRE), expressed in lb. of
moisture/kWh.
Factory Testing
Every DRY-O-TRON® undergoes a
60-point quality control inspection
under FULL load in one of the
company’s four test chambers, which
simulates an indoor pool environment.
An industry first and still the
industry’s best !
Microprocessor Controller
On-board diagnostics and troubleshooting
combined with an extensive
list of points that are constantly being
monitored, result in the most protected
DRY-O-TRON® yet.
Unit-Mounted Sensors
Calibrated and tested at the factory.
Set points are pre-programmed for
each application as per user specifications.
Air side sensors have tripledipped
boards for long life.
BI Fan Wheels
On DRY-O-TRON® sizes 120 and up,
AMCA certified Backward Inclined
airfoil fan wheels are standard. Sizes
102 and smaller use Forward Curved
wheels.
Full-sized Condenser (Reheat) Coil
Also called a reheat coil, it is sized for
the Total Heat of Rejection of the
compressor for maximum flexibility in
all modes of operation, including the
Water Smart mode.
Corrosion-proof Drain Pan
Indoor DRY-O-TRON® units have a
one-piece, 12-gauge noryl resin drain
pan with sanitary rounded corners.
Outdoor DRY-O-TRON® units have a
one-piece, 16-gauge galvanized drain
pan painted with three coats of
USDA-approved converted epoxy
resin. The standard bottom drains are
equipped with strainers.
Heat Contribution
The heat that DRY-O-TRON® recuperates is available as
a contribution to space heating and can be calculated
as follows :
• DA5/RA5/DV5 Series (units without pool heater)
Heat Contribution = (MRC x 1050) + (kW x 3413)
+ (∆HP x 0.746 x 3413)
where
MRC = Moisture Removal Capacity of DRY-O-TRON®
(see table on page 18)
kW = Nominal Power Consumption of
DRY-O-TRON® (see table at right)
∆HP = Difference in blower motor horsepower
if not using standard blower motor
(see page 10)
• DS/RS/DB/RB/DSV Series (units with pool heater)
Same formula as above minus approximately 30%
for minimum pool water-heating mode.
NOTES :
1. If/when heat contribution exceeds space
heat losses, other means of heat rejection
must be used. Please see pages 61-65 for
heat rejection options.
2. Heat contribution should not be considered as
a credit when estimating space heating loads
as it is only available if/when DRY-O-TRON ®
is on a call for dehumidification.
Smart Saver Heat Recovery Coils
Any DRY-O-TRON® that has an exhaust
fan option can also have the
Smart Saver heat recovery coils option.
These coils extract the heat from the
exhaust air stream and transfer it to
the outdoor air stream using a passive
refrigerant system loop. The heat
recovery coils are charged with R-22.
Due to the nature of the refrigerant
with its high volumetric difference
between liquid and gas (1:40), the
recovery system does not require any
mechanical moving parts.
The coils are arranged so that the
refrigerant in the condenser coil (outdoor
air intake) drains into the evaporator
coil (exhaust air).
The heat recovered is determined by
the temperature difference between
indoor air and outdoor air. Here below
is a quick and simple procedure to
calculate the savings :
DRY-O-TRON ® Smart Saver Heat Recovery Coils Payback Analysis
POOL LOCATION : Chicago Bin Data (see table at right)
(T1) O/A average temp : 51 °F (10.5°C)
(T2) Winter design temp : -8 °F (-22°C)
(T3) Indoor design temp : 82 °F (27.7°C)
(V) O/A volume : 4500 CFM
(N) Occupied hours : 12 hours
Energy cost :
0.55$/100,000 Btu
(n) Energy efficiency : 80% (Efficiency of space heating system)
(hre) Heat recovery efficiency : 50 %
Annual heat recovered :
Q = (T3-T1)*1.08*V*(8760*N/24)*hre
= 329,945,400 Btu per year
Annual savings :
= (Q*$/100,000 Btu)/n = $2,268.37 per year
Reduction in space heating : = (T3-T2)*1.08*V*hre = 218,700 Btu/h
In most applications, the average payback is in the two-year range.
Outdoor air represents a major wintertime heating load. The energy recovered
by the DRY-O-TRON® Smart Saver heat recovery coils cuts that load in half. This
can be a noteworthy initial cost saving in the space heating system as well.
Auxiliary Space and Pool Water Heat - Gas Boilers
Dectron has chosen to design its auxiliary
gas heat option in the form of
an outdoor boiler supplying glycol to
a unit mounted hot water coil. The
primary reason is safety. If chloramine
laden air were ever to be introduced
to the combustion air stream, the
result would be the production of
hydrochloric (HCL) acid. This will
never occur with our outdoor boiler
design, resulting in peace of mind and
reduced liability for the system
designer. With a 1:5 turndown, it also
gives Dectron Inc. superior control of
the supply air temperature.
Another benefit of the boiler design
is that it can also be sized to provide
auxiliary pool water heating in addition
to the space heating. This means
that the seasonal shutdown of existing
boilers is possible in retrofit applications.
Outdoor DRY-O-TRON®s can be packaged
with an integral boiler which
includes factory-mounted pump kit
and expansion tank. They are factory
charged with a mixture of 50% deionized
water, 47.5% ethylene glycol and
2.5% DowTherm® anti-corrosion
package for -30° F (-34° C) and factory
tested.
Available Gas Boiler Capacities
MBH Natural Gas
Indoor DRY-O-TRON®s can be field
piped with remote boilers that come
with factory supplied expansion tank
kit and pump. External piping, valves
and glycol are by others.
Heat Rejection Data
Natatorium
Air-Cooled : DS/DSV/RS Condensers
A DRY-O-TRON® dehumidifier is, by design, an excellent
heat recovery device. However, there are times (seasonal)
when this recovered energy exceeds the pool and space
heating demand and must be rejected elsewhere.
A popular method of rejecting unwanted heat is to use
air-cooled condensers, referred to as Dectron Inc.’s aircooled
air conditioning option. The DRY-O-TRON® is
equipped with all the necessary hardware (receiver, headpressure
control valves, etc.) and programming, ready to be
field connected to the outdoor condenser.
On rooftop DRY-O-TRON® units, the outdoor condenser
can be factory packaged, mounted and tested for optimum
performance.
Heat Rejection Data
Air-Cooled : DA5/DV5/RA5 Condensers
Limitations of the air-cooled air conditioning option:
1.The line length between the DRY-O-TRON® and the outdoor
condenser cannot exceed 100 ft (30.5 m) due to
excessive refrigerant charge. If a closer location is not
possible, the solution is to go with the water-cooled
option or fluid cooler option.
2.The outdoor air-cooled condenser must have unobstructed
air flow. If this is not possible, then an indoor centrifugal
blower condenser, suitable for duct connection,
must be used.
Fluid Coolers
The fluid cooler line (FLD Series) is available from Dectron
Inc. as a complete kit (pump, expansion tank...) or the heat
exchanger only. Contact the factory for selections and complete
information.
Centrifugal Condensers
The centrifugal condenser line (CS Series) is available from
Dectron Inc., and includes quality features such as a
spring-isolated DWDI FC fan with belt drive, 2-inch filters,
24V transformer and contactor. Contact the factory for
selections and complete information.
Heat Rejection Data
Natatorium
Water-Cooled Data
Rejecting excess recovered heat can be done by adding
another water-cooled condenser to the DRY-O-TRON® ;
referred to as Dectron Inc.’s water-cooled air conditioning
option. This condenser can be piped to a cooling tower,
chilled water loop or heat pump loop…wherever cooling
water is available. The DRY-O-TRON® is equipped with all
the necessary hardware (condenser, receiver, head-pressure
control valves, etc.) and programming. There are no water
regulating valves used in these constant water flow applications.
The advantage of the water-cooled option is that it is a
packaged solution (no field refrigerant piping) with the
lowest system charge.
Where water temperatures will exceed 90°F EWT, larger condensers will be required. Please contact factory.
On sizes 010 to 080, the water circuit can be designed for water-saving applications. The DRY-O-TRON® is
equipped with an on/off motorized water valve and a water-regulating valve.
Sequence of Operation
Natatorium
Sequence of Operation for DS/RS One Compressor Unit
with Purge Mode Configuration
Supply Air Blower
Blower operation is continuous to prevent
humidity stagnation. It can be
remotely controlled by a Building
Management System (BMS) signal.
Blower stops and all (optional) motorized
dampers close on:
•power failure
•firestat alarm
•freezestat alarm
•remote off control
(manual or from BMS)
Exhaust Air Blowers (EF1 & EF2)
Blowers can be unit mounted or
remote.
EF1 blower operation is continuous or
can be controlled by an occupied/unoccupied
signal from the BMS, a
seven-day time clock or through the
microprocessor in the DRY-O-TRON®.
EF1 exhausts 10% more air than is
introduced through the outdoor air
opening at minimum set point to
maintain a negative space pressure.
EF2 operates only on call for Purge
mode or Economizer mode.
Blowers stop and all (optional) motorized
dampers close on:
•power failure
•firestat alarm
•freezestat alarm
•remote off control
(manual or from BMS)
Outdoor Air Damper
Standard manual damper is normally
closed (unoccupied mode).
On an occupied signal from the sevenday
time clock, the damper opens to
the minimum set point. Outdoor air is
introduced to meet local code requirements.
On Purge mode signal, the damper
opens fully to allow 100% outdoor air
into the DRY-O-TRON®.
All motorized dampers close on supply
air blower stop.
Dehumidification Mode
Dehumidification mode occurs when
the room relative humidity rises above
set point (i.e. 50% RH).
• The outdoor air sensors on DOTICS-
9 controller only, (temperature and
% RH) will verify if Economizer
dehumidification is possible.
• If outdoor air is not suitable for
Economizer operation, the compressor
starts to operate in “dehumidification
and hot gas reheat mode".
The hot gas reheat coil is energized.
Pool Water Heating Mode
Pool water heating mode occurs when
the pool water temperature drops
below set point.
• If the compressor is already operating
in dehumidification or cooling
mode, the compressor hot gas is
used for water heating.
• If all room conditions are satisfied,
or if there is a call for second-stage
pool water heating, the microprocessor
will send a signal to the
auxiliary pool water heater to maintain
water temperature.
• Dectron Inc.’s Water Smart Design
will ensure compressor operation in
dehumidification mode. Cooling
mode is never interrupted by a lack
of water flow to the unit.
• Should water flow be interrupted,
the microprocessor will lock out
water heating mode and display
“low water flow" message on the
operator panel. All other modes of
operation will operate normally.
Cooling Mode
Cooling mode occurs when the space
temperature is above set point.
• The outdoor air sensor verifies if
Economizer cooling is possible.
• If outdoor air is not suitable for
Economizer cooling, the compressor
starts to operate in “cooling mode".
Both the outdoor air-cooled and
water-cooled condensers reject the
compressors’ Total Heat of Rejection
as required.
Economizer Mode
Economizer mode will operate whenever
outdoor conditions permit and
override compressor operation.
• If cooling is called for, the microprocessor
will verify that the outdoor
temperature is suitable. If yes,
and the outdoor humidity level is
neutral to the space, the unit will
operate in Economizer cooling
mode.
• If dehumidification is called for, the
microprocessor (DOTICS-9 only) will
verify that the outdoor moisture
level is suitable. If it is and the outdoor
temperature is neutral to the
space, the unit will operate in
Economizer dehumidification.
• During Economizer mode, the
motorized O/A damper opens to
100% and R/A dampers (evaporator
face and bypass damper) fully close.
Supply fan and exhaust fans (EF1
and EF2) ventilate the space with
100% outdoor air.
Space Heating Mode
Heating mode occurs when the space
temperature drops below set point.
• If the room temperature drops below
set point, the DRY-O-TRON®’s
microprocessor will send a signal to
a space-heating coil (factory mounted
or remote) to maintain space
temperature.
• Optional unit mounted heating coil
freeze protection mode. If the heating
coil’s average leaving air temperature
falls below 45°F/7.2°C
(adjustable), the blowers shut down,
all dampers close and the control
valves will fully open.
Purge Mode
Purge mode occurs on a call for Purge
mode from DRY-O-TRON® operator
panel or remote push button (by others)
momentary signal. This timeroperated
mode (2-20 minutes) is
intended to ventilate the space with
one complete air change and then
automatically resume normal operation.
• DRY-O-TRON® compressors are
stopped.
• Face and bypass dampers on evaporator
coil close fully.
• Outdoor air damper opens fully to
allow 100% outdoor air into the
DRY-O-TRON®.
• EF1 and EF2 operate to evacuate
maximum air flow from the space.
• The space heating coil will temper
the supply air as required.
