Hello to all! It’s my pleasure to be writing the
lead article this month and I’m looking forward to chairing
the February meeting. The Really Big news for
February is that it is T-Shirt Design Contest month!
While it may seem a bit early to be talking about T-shirts,
not to mention COLD, Volksfest will be here before we
know it. And since it is cold,
you’re probably cooped up inside
anyway, so why not put your creativity
to the test Drag out those
Speaking of events, what a fabulous banquet we
had last month! The turnout was great, the weather cooperated
and the food was yummy. Our club “snowbirds” missed
all that and some lively accordion music. Bev Circone from
Kids ‘N Kamp delivered another moving message about the
families they serve and it’s wonderful that we were able to
present them with a check for $3,000. Bob Albright reported
to the Board that our club has donated $40,000 to their cause
over the years!
Thanks to Sue from Hey Hey for putting out a very
nice spread, thanks to Marilyn Allen for making the arrangements
and thanks to Helen Albright for taking reservations,
collecting money and checking people in. The Maennerchor
ballroom was a great setting for a very enjoyable evening. Be
sure to check out Tina’s minutes for a rundown of members
recognized by the Board for their outstanding service over
the past year. Our club is fortunate to have so many dedicated
members that it’s always hard to single out those to be recognized
at the banquet. But it was the members who determined
that Tina deserves the highest award because she
received the only standing ovation! Congratulations to all
and keep up the good work!
We have a lot of good things to look forward to in
2010. A list of who will chair the upcoming meetings along
with the meeting focus can be found in the minutes. Get
ready for fun and new experiences in the upcoming meetings
and even at Volksfest. Show season rolls out with the
Columbus International Auto Show March 18 – 21. Four
Vintage Volkswagens from the COVVC will be featured in
the tribute to classic cars. This will be our premier opportunity
to promote Volksfest. By meeting time we should have
settled on the official name for the northeast arm of the
COVVC headed up by Mike Roecker and Dan Garland. They
have sent flyers to our members in that area and have planned
their kick-off event for May 1 st , a 20-mile caravan cruise
through the Cleveland Metro parks. Sounds like a fun event
that may find Columbus-area members dusting off their cars
for a trip north. More information will follow and will be
available on the web site. Please support their efforts! Looks
like the Michigan Vintage VW Club show will be on board
for May 23 rd . I hope to see a few more VW’s come out this
year for the Arthritis Foundation show in Dublin July10 &
11. We have a few tricks up our sleeves for Volksfest, August
14 and there’s a huge indoor show planned at the I-X Center
in Cleveland in October. Let’s all try to make it to more
cruise-ins this year and resolve to have more fun in 2010!
EUROPEANDelivery
submitted by Brenda Agan
In the late sixties, Volkswagen began promoting the idea of European delivery. American vacationers could purchase their
new car in Germany, drive it around to see the sights, then ship it back to the U.S. The reasoning was that the cost of the
vacation would be offset by the money saved on importation taxes for what would then be a used car. The colorful caricatures
of the VW model line were featured inside a pamphlet explaining the ins and outs of such a plan.
Guess The Year Of The Dash Boards!
Answers are on page eleven
submitted by Brenda Agan
Let’s Talk Toys!
Welcome to Toy Corner everyone! I’d like to start off by introducing
myself to those who don’t know me. My name is Michael Williams, and I’ve been
collecting Volkswagen toys for close to 25 years. My personal collection numbers
by Michael Williams
well over 5,000 toys from all over the world. Most VW toys are constructed primarily
of either metal or plastic, but it’s not uncommon to find examples made from glass, rubber, wax, and even stone.
VW toys started to appear around the late 1930’s and continue to be produced today. I look forward to sharing the history
and value of a different VW toy each month with everyone in the club.
add
I’ll Drink To That!
Design must be contained within a 14" square space
Maximum 3 colors (though can be 2 or 1)
Must include the following wording within the design:
"20th Annual Volksfest" or "Volksfest 20"
"August 14, 2010" (may add "Saturday")
"Watkins Memorial High School"
"Columbus, Ohio" (or "OH")
"Central Ohio Vintage Volkswagen Club" (may
"presented by")
Keep in mind that you especially want the date and
"Volksfest" portion of your design to be easy to read from a
few feet away - think about reading some one's T-shirt as
you're walking behind them at a cruise-in. Check out our web
site for past years' designs.
Good luck to all who enter a design!
Doug
Schleifer
sends along
pics of an
amazing dune
buggy made
entirely of
beer cans!
The attention
to detail and
the proportions
are truly
amazing. Just
when you
think you’ve
seen it all!
What better toy to start with tha n the most famous Volkswagen of all time. He needs no introduction; it’s
“Herbie The Love Bug”. This example was manufactured by the Taiyo toy company of Japan during the mid 1960s
into the early 1970s. This battery operated tinplate car is 9.8 inches long and came in several variations. One example
was remote controlled, while the other was bump,
turn, and go. The early version has the override
bumpers, while the later version has the pressed
bumpers. When the switch is turned on, three
multicolored lights blink below the rear window
as the vehicle begins to move. This toy is fairly
easy to find in some variations and typically takes
up a parking space in any serious VW collector’s
room. The value of a late version car in good condition
with no box is around $40, with a boxed
mint early version coming in around $300 - $400.
There are a few VW toys where the box is actually
worth as much as the toy if not more. We’ll look
at a few of these VW toys in the coming months.
Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!
Bruce, Rita and Sarah Reymer – Club is family oriented
members of our club attended the Michigan show. Classes
were held for all vw's, even the new beetles.
The Michigan Show has a popular feature called "The
Living History of the Volkswagen Automobiles".
Volkswagen historicans tell the spectator the history of the
cars on display. The 2000 show featured the cars of 3 0f our
members. The members and their cars were: Dave Porter,
Kubelwagen; Ted Chaney, Vintage Beetle; Tom Hubbard,
Westfalia. The week-end ended with a trip to Tony Packo's
in Toledo for dinner.
May 20th found some of our members attending The
MS Benefit Cruise on at the Loewes on Morse Road. Ten
VWs were registered for the cruise. Five cars took awards.
The awards were given to Fred Coventry, Judy Diley, Diane
Sims, Jim Brosnahan and Kathy. Tina Gibson, Lee Fisher,
Tom Diley, Jay Burris, and Laura also participated in the
cruise in .
The SEOVVC hosted the annual Memorial Day Car
Show. It was held on May 29th at the Athens County
Fairground. There were separate show classes for domestic
and foreign cars.
We had fun this year working on
our holiday card with our youngest of
three daughters Stacey who is just
starting her own small design firm,
Poochie Prints
(ww.poochieprints.com).
Joni and I had this idea of working
Murray into the card along with
our four grandkids. I remember seeing
a cute shot on the COVVC web site
where a member placed some kids
under the hood of a bug.
Hmmm, why not cram the kids into
Murray's trunk Everything was fine
until Joni tried to position Will, our
youngest grandson, into the final position
in the middle. Every time she
would get him near the Bug he started
to wail. As she pulled him away he
calmed down immediately. We finally
just had to bite the bullet and plunk
him down.
You can see the result! Stacey came
up with the very appropriate headline
and worked her magic in Photo Shop.
Happy New Year everyone!
The last of May,2000, was full of activities for all of
our club members. Could June, 2000, be as busy
FEBRUARY IS T-SHIRT DESIGN MONTH
by Brenda Agan
Hello! Seems like we did this not that long ago, but just
wanted to get the word out that the T-Shirt design contest has
been moved up to February. Since the Show T-Shirt design is
also the Show Flyer design, by moving the contest to
February, we should be able to get show flyers printed up and
get the word out about Volksfest 20 earlier!
Please get your creative genius cranking and submit
your design at the February 11th meeting. Here are the specs:
Food, fun, fellowship and awards to deserving COVVC
members for a job well done, were all part of the
January banquet. Held at the Maennerchor, sixty nine
folks enjoyed a well deserved thanks for a great 2009,
and also a look ahead to our 20th anniversary in 2010!
The highlight of past banquets has been the check presentation
to Kids-N-Kamp, and again this year we contributed
$3000 toward this wonderful cause. A lovely
evening for all in attendance.
