Trophy Design Contest At March Meeting. With the t-shirt design selected at theFebruary meeting, we will be moving on to the trophydesign for Volksfest 22 at the March meeting.Pictured here are some of the past winners, including last years trophy at left. When thinking of your design, keep in mind that we have to make almost 40 ofthese things, so try to keep it simple! Just ask Tom Kern about cutting out 40 circles! (Ifyou’re in need of pine circles, you know where to get them!) Also keep the overall expensein mind, as we want as much of the Volksfest money to go to Kids-N-Kamp as possible.See you at the March 8th meeting with your creative trophy designs.Staying with the toy theme for this article, my sonMatthew and I made the annual trip last Sunday to a toy showat Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio hosted by my good friendJohn Hodges. I again was lucky enough to score a few niceVW toys which I hope to write about in future articles.Matthew also found a few nice toys to add to his collectionof airplanes and monster trucks. I guess it doesn’t matter since we’reboth on the same team. As I stated last year in the March article, the price of some older VW toys continues to surpriseme. Many of the older VW toys from the 1950’s through the1970’s made by companies such as Bandai, Tayio, Schuco, and Corgi to name a few continues to bring a premium pricedespite the current health of the economy. This brings a newmeaning to investing your money in precious metals. On another note, before closing out my article for themonth, I again want to challenge every club member to writean article for the newsletter. I’ll even help you out with someideas. Write about your first VW or the VW you had in highschool or college. Write a story about the first VW restorationyou did or the first VW vacation you took. Maybe you tooka VW to the prom or spring break. Tell us about your dreamVW or the VW you wish you still had. We want your stories,so start writing!! I’ll be writing a story in the coming monthsabout some of the more interesting adventures I’ve had inVolkswagens.Until then, I’ll see you at the March meeting…Marion’s Oldest ImportAuto RepairBill Huntsman, OwnerForeign & Domestic Repair q New & Used Foreign Parts740-383-1118 or 800-686-2250624 East Church Street, Marion Ohio 43302LicensedMonthly Meeting Minutesby Debi Garrett, filling in for Tina Gibson, SecretaryMinutes Of The 9th February MeetingDistributorMarilyn welcomed everyone to the meeting promptlyat 7:30. Bob gave the treasury report- $7000.00 given to Kids nKamp in January ; $9200.00 in the bank and $500.00 paid outfor insurance and bond. This is a once a year expenditure.Membership report was given by Debi G- we have 222members of which 52 still need to renew before the show. There was no cruise in report.Marilyn reminded people to wear their badges and she isstill working on the yearbooks.Marilyn introduced Stan Ralph- service manager fromMag. He spoke on the new plant down in Chattanooga wherethe new VW cars will be made. The have enough room topossibly also be able to make a truck line and a van line. VWwould like to be #1 in the world. Stan also spoke about MAGand what they would like to see happen with our group. Very simple and effective.Promoting exhaust flow through the heat riser tube iscritical in northern climates to allow the gasoline to properlyvaporize in the manifold and prevent carburetor icing! Oncethis modification was completed, it was obvious it workedwell because after only a minute or two of running the tubeunder the carb was too hot to touch.I’ll continue this story next month as I do the carb andrepair some other problem areas while it’s apart. Waking Up from a Deep Sleep, Part Threeby Bruce AmackerLast month’s column left off after assembling the pistons, jugs, and heads on the 1600 I am getting back on theroad. At this time I need to trim out the external items likeintake and exhaust systems and do the carb. You mayremember a while back I did a column about the heat riserand the need for modifying the exhaust on an aftermarketexhaust system (header) so that the heat riser provides thenecessary warmth to vaporize the fuel in the intake manifold.Well, let me refresh your memory and show you a picture ofthe modifications as they are completed.Rather than bore you with repeating a column I did in2010, you can access the full story from the COVVC websiteby going to covvc.org>forum>technical articles>Zundfolgetechnical articles>COVVC-#6, 7 Fuel Atomization and CarbHeat.pdf . This will give you the two full articles I wrote onthis topic in 2010 along with full color pictures you could notget in the original newsletter column. If you’re a glutton forpunishment you can also type out this string of charactersinto your web browser to access the articles:http://covvc.lefora.com/composition/attachment/9e38db4a0ea 8 8 4 5 f 4 d 1 5 7 7 3 7 2 b d 3 4 d 3 3 / 9 6 6 8 3 1 / C O V V C -%20%236%2C%207%20Fuel%20Atomization%20and%20Carb%20Heat.pdfFirst, the Manx is equipped with a “dual cannon”style aftermarket exhaust that has theports present for the heat riser, but they werepoorly constructed and severely restricted. The first thing I had to do was open up theports to let them breathe because when theheader assembly was built, only small passageswere burned with an acetylene torch inbetween the header pipe and the riser pipeunder 1/8” in diameter. There won’t be muchflow through there! I took a die grinder with afluted cutting head and opened up both ofthese so there would be no flow restriction. The heat riser tube in the stock dual portintake manifold also had severe restrictionfrom carbon and rust accumulation, I’d guessabout 90+% by how much air I could blowthrough it. This needed to be cleaned outbefore assembly so the system would operate correctly. When things work well, I take a piece of wire rope and apower drill and ream the carbon/rust gunk out that’s blockingthe passageway. This is very common and needs to bechecked/cleared every time the intake manifold is off of thecar. I was lucky with this one, as it went smoothly using adrill and several different lengths of wire rope.In extreme cases I’ve had to cut a hole in thetube, use an extremely long drill bit to clearthe rust blockage, and weld the hole closed.Next, a simple modification needed to bemade to the exhaust pipe to enhance flowthrough the heat riser. In a factory exhaust apressure imbalance exists due to the way internalpipes are arranged. If you look closely, there is a small “draft tube” connected to oneof the heat riser pipes on the muffler thatbypasses the muffler baffles. Bypassing thebaffles causes the pressure imbalance neededto create flow through the heat riser. In aftermarketexhausts a flow diverter needs to beinstalled to enhance flow through the heat riserunder the carburetor. Without this diverter noContinued on page nineLet’s Talk Toys!by Michael WilliamsWelcome back everyone!! As you know, one of the themes for the March meeting will be TOYS!!.. This month’s example is an orange coloredVW bus manufactured by the Mego Toy Company of New Yorkduring the early 1970s. The toy is constructed of plastic and is 7inches long with a yellow surfboard on top. The toy represents anearly VW split window bus and is friction powered. When pushedforward, the bus produces a rumbling engine sound. This toy is very rare and doesn’t come up for sale very often. It’s even rarer to find the toy’s box. The value of thetoy in good condition is around $55, with a boxed mint example coming in around $150 - $175. On another note,Mego also produced a Batman bus and a Joker bus licensed by DC Comics. Both of these VW buses are SUPERrare and are very difficult to find with or without the box. Keep your eyes open, and maybe you’ll find one of thesebuses at the next flea market or garage sale.Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!an interview sheet. VW 1500 Review submitted by Jim MeyerThanks to Jim Meyer, resident Type Three expert,we will be running the Car and Driver magazine report onthe VW 1500, from their April 1964 issue. The reportfocused on the “notchback” model, the one version thatwas never officially imported to America. The Type Threefast back and square back were imported, with moderatesuccess.
