New HBB 2/3 pole power connectors to satisfy increasing demand for power
IP2X 2/3 Pole connectors for DC and AC Power applications
Hypertac has now extended its HBB family of connectors
to include two and three pole 300 amp inserts with inbuilt
safety loop pins, integrated into a single quick release
connector shell. The product development and extension
of the HBB range including IP2X protection is aligned to
customers’ requirements and industry trends to integrate
even more power in less space.
By utilising just one connector shell, latching mechanism
and backshell, Hypertac’s new product offers improved connector packaging compared with the use of
two or three individual single pole connectors so designers do not have to include the extra space, which
is needed for mating and unmating multiple single pole connectors. The HBB 2/3 pole connector
includes two 300 amp rated contacts integrated into one connector shell measuring just 60mm in
diameter and three 300 amp rated contacts integrated into one connector shell measuring just 72mm in
diameter, providing up to a 40% smaller connector footprint and reducing weight and cost.
Safety regulatory requirements have led Hypertac to introduce two
important safety protection features. The first is ‘last mate first break’
loop pins which enable customers to design their equipment to
automatically turn power on and off when connectors are mated or
unmated. The second is full IP2X protection on the pin and socket in
either gender. IP2X is an important safety feature in power
connectors due to high current and high voltage systems operating
up to 1,000 volts.

Hypertac’s 2/3 pole connectors are available in robust aluminium metal shells which are fully sealed to
IP67 and feature 360° EMI/RFI shielding. IP67 sealing on power management equipment in aerospace,
fighting vehicles and industrial applications is becoming essential due to protecting the high voltage and
high current power electronics from water and /or fluid ingress.
Configurations are available in cable or panel mount, straight or “multi-angle” right angle back shells
which allow users to simplify their cable management architecture, further increasing reliability and
reducing the likelihood of interconnection failures.
Hypertac’s HBB connectors combine high current handling capability with small size and exceptional
environmental performance for demanding power applications. The HBB range is suitable for use in all
types of high-power applications. This is particularly applicable to electric drives and servos used in
fighting vehicles, power generation (DC and/or AC), ground-based and airborne avionics systems, civil
aerospace, rail transportation, automotive and medical sectors.
Designed for easy mating and quick release, the HBB 2/3 pole connectors use Hypertac’s hyperboloid
contact technology which offers high reliability and excellent integrity. Hypertac’s unique contact system
provides a current rating of 300A from a 9mm diameter pin. Additional benefits include contact
resistance figures as low as 0.05mΩ which helps to reduce resistive losses. This also assists with
thermal management which allows better power handling in a smaller space with a lower overall mass.
The HBB series features a polarised design with a variety of options that support assembly, allowing
simple maintenance and speedy changeover for minimal system downtime. Rated for use up to 1000V
DC, the HBB series can accept cable sizes up to 70mm 2 for 300A versions. Metal receptacles and plug
shells can be specified with a variety of plating options including zinc/cobalt, cadmium and electroless
nickel.
