community news If you don’t like what you are hearing or watching – COMPLAIN! Says Louise Addams Every year the BBC receives more than one million comments, appreciations or enquiries about BBC programmes, which works out at around 3,000 a day. Many of these are complaints about progarmmes listeners and viewers have found offensive. The BBC takes complaints very seriously, so, if you consider what you are seeing or hearing to be offensive, it’s up to you complain. Write to BBC Complaints, PO Box 1922, Darlington, DL3 0UR. If you don’t complain, nothing will change. It’s not up to them to do something about it. The them in this case is YOU! I found the Good Friday offering - The Mystery of Mary Magdalene - particularly offensive, so I joined thousands of others, including the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, former bishop of Rochester, in condemning the documentary because it amounted to the “sexualisation of Christ”. I was even more upset because it was screened at midday on Good Friday – the moment the Bible reports Jesus was nailed to the cross. Lord Bragg, presenter, who described himself as “no longer a believer”, argued that Mary’s close relationship with Jesus was effectively airbrushed out of the accepted Biblical account by “misogynist” Romans and pointed out that ancient writings, known as the Gnostic Gospels, were not included in the agreed list of books which became the New Testament. Despite what media pundits frequently claim, Christians are not a minority group in this country - more Christians watch Songs of Praise than Match of the Day. Can you imagine what the outcry would have been had the BBC screened an equally offensive documentary on the sexualisation of the prophet Mohammed Aaqil Ahmed runs the BBC’s religion and ethics department. His work for Channel Four included the two part series ‘The Cult of the DOMESTIC APPLIANCE your local appliance retailer 78-80 EAST STREET, SELSEY 01243 602392 “NEW AND RECONDITIONED APPLIANCES” Sales, Spares & Repairs Transform your home with ................... He moved to the BBC after Roman Catholic priests raised the issue that his Channel Four documentaries appeared to contain a pro-Islam bias and failed to give enough attention and respect to Christianity. The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, raised concerns with the then BBC Director General, Mark Thompson, that since a Muslim was now in charge of its religious programming the Christian voice was being minimised. Leaders of all Christian denominations suspect the BBC is giving preferential treatment to minority faiths. The right to Free Speech is very precious in this country, however, that right does not include an entitlement to denigrate the beliefs of others. I’m thankful Our Queen attends church every Sunday and that her father, George VI, called upon God for guidance and help when Britain found itself at war with Germany for the second time in a century. King George also called the nation to prayer when Hitler assembled a fleet to invade Britain in 1940 - a project scuttled by bad weather, in much the same way the Spanish Armada was destroyed by a storm in 1588 when it sailed down the English Channel to overthrow the first Elizabeth. We are a Christian nation and our leaders forget that at their peril. West Sussex Library Service runs a scheme to help those who are unable to, or find it difficult to make it to the Library. Volunteers visit people in their home to deliver and collect library items, ranging from the latest paperback title to books in large print and books on cassette and CD. This allows us to offer the service to many who would otherwise not be able to borrow library items. Currently, across West Sussex Library Service we have over 290 volunteers, who visit over 700 housebound people. We also have over 500 people who use the library to help a friend or family member who is housebound or unable to get into the library. We currently need more volunteers to help with the service in the Selsey area. It would involve visiting people in their homes to deliver and return library books and other items, and would most likely require two or three hours a month at most. All volunteers will need to complete a criminal record check and provide references, as they are visiting people in their own home. If you would like to know more about volunteering for the Library service please call Felicity Masters on 01243 777351 or email at felicity.masters@westsussex.gov.uk Selsey Venture Club There will be an outing on MONDAY 3RD JUNE to THE OLD BARN GARDEN CENTRE, DIAL POST, WORTHING.
