The Texas Aesthetic IV
Contemporary Texas Regionalism
William Reaves Fine Art • May 20 - July 30, 2011
William Montgomery, Empress of Silence, 2011

Contemporary Genius and
Timeless Texas Imagery:
The Texas Aesthetic IV
Those of you familiar with our gallery
know the pleasure and pride that we take in conducting
exhibitions
of historically significant
Texas art as
our means of tracing
the majestic rise of
art within our state.
Consumed as we
are with this historical
mission, we are
elated to present
The Texas Aesthetic
IV, our annual exhibition
of contemporary
art, as yet another compelling chapter in our
ongoing saga examining the course of Texas art.
In this exhibition, William Reaves Fine Art “fast
forwards” to the twenty-first century and presents
16 of the best artists painting in the state today in
an effort to examine
their treatment of
the Texas aesthetic!
At William
Reaves Fine Art, we
work from the thesis
that there are defining
qualities and attributes
in true Texas
painting, and that
these qualities are
reflected throughout
generations of Texas art and artists.
43. Laura Lewis, A Thousand Shades of White, 2011
Whether representational or otherwise, we are of
the opinion that the best of Lone Star art possess
a uniquely Texas aesthetic, distinguished by sub-

ject, style, palette and expression. This exhibition
underscores our point.
The 16 artists represented in
this year’s show are contemporary
painters of the Texas scene. Similar
to their illustrious predecessors,
these artists embrace the iconic
character and down-home scenery
of our own great state. An overview
of the exhibition features their continued
fascination with the flora and
fauna of the Texas landscape, their
attention to the translucent qualities
and atmospheric effects of our Texas
light, as well as their affinity for the
wildlife and natural habitat of the
Lone Star state. In this sense, these
artists demonstrate their kinship
with historical Texas artists, and advance
traditional subject matter offered
by earlier Texas masters from
Jose Arpa to Samuel Ziegler. Collectively these
works convey timelessness and a natural progression
of subject matter in Texas art.
These paintings also reveal a strong
quality of composition and express
the painterly facility evident in the
current generation of Texas artists.
Texas has always been blessed with
more than its share of accomplished
painters conveying stunning imagery
of their home country. This
exhibition reminds us of that.
It is true that great Texas paintings
transcend the period in which they
are produced. While the master
works of earlier artists such as Julian
Onderdonk and Alexandre Hogue
now hold places of honor in museums
and fine private collections of
Texas art, it is worth remembering
14. Keith Davis, Texas Barn Owl, 2011 that these revered objects were acquired
initially by astute and admiring
collectors while the artists were living and

“contemporary”. Great paintings, therefore, are
worth collecting as they become available. As
descendents and heirs to
the great legacy of Texas
masters, we believe that
the contemporary artists
in this show also warrant
the attention of serious
collectors in their present
era. Just as savvy buyers
exhibited foresight to
pursue master works of
Onderdonk and Hogue
early on, we believe that
present-day collectors will
be rewarded many fold
through their support
of Texas masters-in-themaking
included herein, and that their works will
likewise stand the test of time!
So, enjoy the Texas Aesthetic IV, remember
the legacy of painting in our great state and
30. Robert Harrison, Bluebonnets in the Hill Country, 2011
take home a painting or two- for the present and
posterity.
