Update on Gold Nanoparticles
Author
Valerio Voliani
In the last decade, gold nanoparticles have provided a suitable platform for the development of novel and efficient diagnostic
and therapeutic tools, which avoid the typical drawbacks of the old systems. They are biocompatible and they can be easily
synthesised, encapsulated and functionalised with (bio)molecules. Nanoparticles produced by a wet chemistry synthesis have the
geometry, which enables the complete control of their optical and physical properties. It is also possible to influence the targeting
and stability/release behaviour by coating the nanoparticle surface.
In this Update the reader can find in a single volume the methods used most often for the synthesis and coating of gold
nanoparticles (spheres, cages, cubes, rods), the links between optical features and geometries of gold nanoparticles, and the
novel applications in nanomedicine of gold nanoparticles determined by their geometry. One of the main objectives of this Update
is to provide, a readily comprehensible connection in all the chapters between the geometry of gold nanoparticles and their final
applications. Another target of this book is to provide information about efficient processes for the synthesis and the coating of
gold nanoparticles, all of which have been directly tested by the author.
This Update offers comprehensive information on the whole topic from the synthesis of the gold nanoparticles to their medical
applications; this is accompanied by a complete and recent bibliography, in order to give to the readers the opportunity to
research further the topics addressed in the book. In this way, students and researchers from academia and industry can have a
complete picture of gold nanostructures, physicians and biologists can develop ideas and applications for the new nano-tools,
and chemists can have a general guide to the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. This is a state-of-the-art guide for the synthesis
and uses of gold nanoparticles.
Practical Guide to Structures, Properties and Applications of
Styrenic Polymers
Styrenic polymers are among the economically most important plastics. They combine benign processing with a large variety of
product properties - from stiff and transparent to tough and durable. The fact that styrene can be polymerized by different reaction
mechanisms (radical, ionic and metal catalyzed) makes this line of products unique in regards to the variety of its properties and
applications.
The primary objective of this book is to provide a detailed understanding of structure and property relationships of styrenic
polymers, and their specific use in various applications. By understanding basic chemistry, supermolecular assembly of blockand
graft polymers and microscopic fracture mechanisms, the reader will be able to quickly derive macroscopic behavior and
hence select the most suitable polymer for a given application.
The second objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive overview about unique value propositions of styrenic polymers
in different industries and applications. The reader will get an in-depth understanding of why specific styrenic polymers dominate
in market segments like computer and printer housings, exterior automotive parts and the food packaging industry, and what the
specific customer benefits of using these polymers are.
Finally, the third objective is to provide an outlook for future product and application developments. Hence it serves not only as
a quick reference guide for downstream industries, but also as a practical guide for students and researchers in this field of
material science.
Characteristics and Analysis of Non-Flammable Polymers
Author
T. R. Crompton
In recent years there has been an increasing demand for fire retardant versions of a range of plastics. Such applications are
fire retardancy in vehicles, aircraft, manned space vehicles, marine and industrial applications such as electronics and a wide
range of applications in the building industry including roofing and interior walls. Also in domestic applications such as furniture,
clothes, bedding, upholstery and electrical goods.
Fire retardancy in polymers can be achieved by either of three ways.
Firstly there are forms of polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, which are intrinsically fire retardant.
The second type are rendered fire retardant by the inclusion of a suitable additive in the formulation. These include additives
based on bromine, antimony, nitrogen phosphorus and silicon. An essential requirement for fire retardant polymers used in
enclosed spaces is that they do not release any toxic products upon combustion. In this respect antinomy containing additives are
going out of favour due to the release of toxic antimony volatiles upon combustion.
Thirdly, introduction of intumescence into polymers by the introduction of suitable compounds is being increasingly used as a
means of imparting fire retardancy in polymers.
There exists a plethora of methods used to assess fire retardancy in polymers. These are discussed and summarised in this book.
The book will be of interest not only to working in industry but also to design engineers and producers in the polymer fabrication
industries.
Update on Polymers for Pulmonary Drug Delivery
Authors
Hugh D.C. Smyth
Jason McConville
Ibrahim El-Sherbiny
Pulmonary drug delivery has been a rapidly expanding field, moving from the traditional propellant based metered dose inhaler
delivery of small asthma drugs, to a broader landscape of new devices and novel drugs for local and systemic delivery. The field
has greatly expanded yet the tools for pulmonary drug delivery systems have not kept pace with the potential applications. One of
the key developments has been the use of polymers to achieve better control of pulmonary drug delivery. This has the potential to
expand the toolbox available for researchers in the field to deliver their new chemical entities successfully to the lung.
This book reviews the use of polymers in pulmonary drug delivery, encompassing polymers from their use in devices and
packaging, in addition to their use as excipients in formulations delivered to the airways. The book is arranged by application and
extensively reviews the technical and patent literature.
This is the first volume totally dedicated to polymers in pulmonary drug delivery and should be the resource of choice for those
in the field, especially managers in the pharma/biotech industry. Naturally, the text will be of great interest to academics and
graduate students. Finally, regulatory affiliated scientists will also find this resource invaluable.
Update on Production of Recombinant Therapeutic Protein:
Transient Gene Expression
Transient gene expression (TGE) has been actively pursued over the past decade. The approach offers the advantages of short
development time, leading to much lower development costs when compared to stable cell line development. Furthermore, the
quality of the products
obtained from TGE is suitable for preclinical assessment, thus speeding the “Proof of Principal” stage in which large
biopharmaceutical companies screen multiple drug candidates prior to advancing them
into the formal development pipeline. Due to quick turnover and low cost, TGE is used as the first step to screen expression
strategy in terms of construction design and molecular candidates. Recent progresses in many aspects of TGE technology
development: cell line engineering, plasmid preparation, media and additives development, procedural simplification, and
process automation will likely contribute to realization of large scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing using TGE platforms for
preclinical and early clinical development in the near future.
Healthcare Sterilisation: Back to the Future and Scientific Wizardry
The magic of sterilisation is more than just the inactivation of all biological organisms. It is a process without the destruction or
damage of items, materials or polymers being processed unless for destruction of infectious entities, materials or wastes. It is an
interdisciplinary integration of biology, chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, materials, medical, physics, quality, regulatory, and
statistics.
The first objective of this book is to expand the scope of sterilisation and sterility into environmental control, microbiology; and
how product design, materials, polymers interrelate to sterilization and sterility assurance
The second objective is to provide some wizardry on how to release processed materials and product just in time; improve
processing and regulatory criteria; and future aspects beyond historical in house processing
The final objective of this book is to provide to operators, operators and management of sterilisation activities and sterilizers; some
historical background, science and technical information and training to their operators, technicians and ‘related’ professionals in
this area (e.g., Auditors, Quality Control, Assurance, Notified Bodies and Regulators, Polymer Chemists and Engineers).
Update on Carbon Fibre
Both environmental and economic factors have driven the development of recycling routes for the increasing amount of carbon
fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) waste generated. This technology update presents current status and outlook of CFRP recycling
operations, focusing on state-of-the-art fibre reclamation and re-manufacturing processes, and on the commercialisation and
potential applications of recycled products. It is shown that several recycling and re-manufacturing processes are reaching
a mature stage, with implementations at commercial scales in operation, production of recycled CFRPs having competitive
structural performances, and demonstrator components having been manufactured. The major challenges for the sound
establishment of a CFRP recycling industry and the development of markets for the recyclates are summarised; the potential for
introducing recycled CFRPs in structural components is discussed, and likely promising applications are investigated.
of processing, low price and a combination of advantageous properties. In the last decade, nanofiller particles have prompted
much attention and become a developing field in nanocomposites.
The main objective of this book is to show how a particle size at nano scale offers an enormous amount of surface area and a
great dispersion behavior. Detailed information provided to show that the use of nanofillers is very promising so as to improve
the physical properties more effectively than conventional type of fillers. This book provides up-to-date information on recent
advances in various aspects of modern composites reinforced by nanofillers, including their fabrication and engineering
properties. The change in such properties can be related to the subsequent conformational changes, but there is a big
controversy for the conformational behavior of polymer chains when perturbed by nanoparticles.
To accomplish these tasks, this book focuses on the behavior of nanoparticles in both morphology control and reinforcement.
Applications of Polymers in Drug Delivery
During the past 20 years, advances in drug formulations and innovative routes of administration have been made in order to
maximize therapeutic benefits of pharmacotherapy along with non-invasive routes for drug administrations for improved patient
convenience. Polymers are integral part of conventional drug delivery in solid orals, in liquids, suspensions and emulsions, and
as film coatings for various advantages i.e. modifying release characteristics of drug, flow property, stability and taste masking.
Advances in polymer science have led to the development of several novel drug-delivery systems which made alternate routes of
drug delivery possible apart from its traditional applications in drug delivery.
The Handbook will explore different polymers and their applications in various routes for drug delivery including buccal, gastric,
intestinal, payer’s patch, colon, parenteral, rectal, vaginal, nasal, pulmonary, ocular and otic applications. The handbook aims to
provide an overview of the applications of polymers in drug delivery. Readers will be directed where necessary to appropriate
textbooks and specialised reviews.
Pulp Production and Processing
Cellulose represents the most widely spread organic polymer found in nature and it was used for a long time as a raw material
for paper, textiles, film and flexible packing material. Due to its accessibility in huge amounts by photosynthesis process as a
renewable material, cellulose is considered at present as a chance to answer to many problems connected with sustainable
development. This explains the great scientific interest for this compound along with a lot of preoccupations to systematize the
accumulated information in reviews and books. This book will present the aspects of cellulose obtaining in the correleation with
its integration in a new concept of biorefining.
Thus usual technological steps of pulp manufacture (pulping, bleaching) will be continued with chemistry charactersitics of by
-products and their utilization, fiber characterization for paper obtaining, cellulose derivatives and special products resulted
in cellulose processing (beads and microspheres, micro-and nano-structures, fibers production, their antibacterial properties,
optical functional film, and hydrogen).
Nanomaterials are the study of how materials behave when their dimensions are reduced to the nanoscale. It can also refer to
the materials themselves that are used in nanotechnology. Materials reduced to the nanoscale can suddenly show very different
properties compared to what they exhibit on a macroscale, enabling unique applications. The book offers scopes that have
potential for applications in several disciplines of nano materials. Each chapter ranges from new methods to novel applications
of existing methods to gain understanding of the material and/or structural behaviour of new and advanced systems. In view of
the different background of the expected audience, readers are requested to focus on the main ideas, and to highlight as much
as possible the specific advantages that arise from applying modern ideas. A chapter may therefore be motivated by the specific
problem, but just as well by the advanced method used which may be more generally applicable. The collection of topics in this
second volume of the book reflects the diversity of recent advances in nanofibres with a broad perspective which will be practical
for scientists as well as graduate students and engineers.
Polymer coated textiles are known as engineered composite materials at macro scale. Coating can offer significant improvements
to the substrate, thanks to a combination of physical (such as impermeability and fabric abrasion), chemical and aesthetic
components. The number of polymer combinations enables a wide variety of textile substrate structures and new, innovative
applications are being introduced almost every day.The polymer coated textile industry runs in parallel with the developments
in textile research: applications such as reactive coatings with nanoparticles (with self-cleaning, self-sterilising surfaces),
systems with conductive polymer coatings to provide EM shielding, electronic textile systems (with body monitoring properties),
environmental responsive systems and so forth, are already somewhat classical and are continually being developed and
updated.Advances in Polymer Coated Textiles is an up-to-date summary of the technical textile industry, considering the passage
from conventional to emerging technologies. It discusses the criteria for selection of coating and textile and summarises the
manufacturing basics of the system. It explores a range of emerging technologies, including smart, intelligent and nanostructured
applications, alongside the testing and quality control methods of such systems. This book is a must for textile and polymer
technologists, engineers, scientists and students and all those who are interested in this interdisciplinary field.
Anatoly N Neverov
The issue of biodamages comprises a wide range of scientific and practical tasks associated with protection of raw materials
and products against damage by bacteria, fungi, insects and rodents during long-term storage, production, transportation and
operation. The first objective of this book is to provide detailed information on the three interrelated parts: bacteria and fungi (the
source of biodamages); insects and rodents (materials and products depredators); and materials and products damaged by living
organisms. The most modern data on morphology and physiology of biodegrading microorganisms are presented. The second
objective of this book is to provide the reader with a systematisation of biological degradation on both natural and synthetic
materials and products (plastics, textile, fibres, leather and fur, wood and so on). Problems of utilisation of polymeric wastes
using microorganisms are discussed and main protection methods and technology for raw materials and semi-products against
biodamages are shown. Practical recommendation for struggle against biodamage of materials by insects (moth, leather beetles,
wood-fretters, cockroaches and termites) and rodents (mice and rats) are given. The final objective of this book is to illustrate
Carbon Nanotube Based Composites: Processing, Properties,
Modelling and Application
Author
Antonio Pantano
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have amazing properties and a key way to take advantage of this is by incorporating nanotubes into
a matrix to build composite materials. The best candidates for this task are undoubtedly polymers. Almost every characteristic
of a polymer can be significantly enhanced by adding carbon nanotubes and as a result, new potential applications of carbon
nanotube enhanced polymer composites are discovered every day. However, before carbon nanotube enhanced polymer
composites become commonplace there are some tough challenges that need to be overcome. This book reviews the status of
worldwide research in both single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotube based composites. It serves as a practical guide on
carbon nanotube based composites and a reference to students and researchers from the academia and industry.
High Performance Elastomers and Polymers for Oil & Gas 2012
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
Political pressures and environmental concerns have made new oil deposits more difficult and expensive to find in recent years.
In response to a decreasing supply of oil, the extraction of oil from new and mature reserves has called for high performance
materials with more and more extreme service temperature ranges, increased resistance to harsh oils and chemicals and
the ability to withstand higher pressures in down-hole environments. High performance elastomers and thermoplastics have
been constantly evolving to meet these needs and are now found in just about everything from subsea trees, well heads and
umbilicals to piping and chemical processing plants. Despite these advances, continued research, development and qualification
is still required to reduce the need for costly intervention and to respond to new challenges. These proceedings cover all the
presentations from the conference which was developed for operators, contractors, equipment and component suppliers, material
suppliers and research organisations involved with polymers and their use in oil and gas applications.
Rosin-based Chemicals and Polymers
Edited by
Jinwen Zhang
Rosin is an abundantly available natural product composed of around 90% acidic and 10% neutral compounds. Rosin and its
derivatives have long been used as tackifiers in adhesives. They have also found other niche applications in inks, varnishes, paints,
sealing wax, some soaps, paper sizing; soldering, plasters, food additives, etc. However, many of the conventional applications
of rosin mainly utilize the inherent physical properties in various practices. In recent years there has been a growing interest
in using rosin acid-derivatives as building blocks in the synthesis of polyesters, polyurethanes, epoxies and curing agents. In
addition, rosin acid derived chemicals are also used as nucleating agents, surfactants, drugs and other special applications.
This book brings together a collection of scientific articles on recent research and development of utilizing natural chemicals
from pine resin as feedstock for polymers and new industrial chemicals. It focuses mainly on the new use of rosin acids, but also
covers the applications of other chemicals from tree sap such as terpinenes. This book will provide considerable material for
researchers in both academia and industry with the latest developments in the utilization of rosin and terpinenes.
RubberChem 2010
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
The global economic downturn had a vast impact on the rubber chemicals sector as many customers in the allied automotive,
building and construction and industrial equipment fields saw their businesses badly hit. However, with the world economy now
growing and consumer confidence improving, the demand for higher performance and superior durability of rubber articles is
driving technical product developments and innovations in the use of chemicals in rubber compounds. With experts predicting
that the less industrialised nations of China and India will lead the economic recovery, low-price competition from Asia is likely
to continue to impact the European rubber chemicals market. Add to this the complications of the REACH regulations, which have
required large-scale product reformulations and it is clear to see why there is a need for continued research and development to
respond to new challenges. The seventh international conference devoted to rubber chemicals, compounding and mixing covered
developments in a range of rubber chemicals from accelerators, antioxidants and antiozonants to retarders and peptisers. This
event featured representatives from some of the world’s leading companies in the rubber chemicals arena, with papers from
Structure and Properties of Crosslinked Polymers
Authors
Gasan M. Magomedov
Georgii V Kozlov
Gennady Zaikov
This book gives a fresh point of view on the curing processes, structure and properties of crosslinked polymers. The general
view is that the structure and properties of crosslinked polymers are defined by their density, this book demonstrates that the
parameters are defined by the supermolecular (a more precisely, supersegmental structure) of the crosslinked polymers. The
quantitative relationships of the structures/properties are obtained for these polymers. Using an epoxy polymer as a nanofiller
for a nanocomposite is discussed and a new class of polymer is proposed. The introduction of the nanofiller gives variation in
the mechanical properties, degree of crystallinity, gas permeability and so on. The use of these crosslinked polymers as natural
nanocomposites is proposed. Practical methods of crosslinked polymer’s supersegmental structure regulation are considered,
and all the changes that this gives their properties are detailed. This book will be of significance to all material scientists and
students of material science.
An Introduction to Conductive Polymer Composites
Author
iPolycond Consortium
This book is derived from the findings of an EU-funded project.Tthe objective of the project was to develop conductive plastic
composites that are eco-friendly, cost effective and of high added value. This was achieved through an ambitious multidisciplinary
approach developing new, radically innovative, knowledge-based and sustainable products for protection against the effects of
electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Research was based on the compounding of engineering polymers and inherently conductive polymers (ICP) with improved
conductivity, or hybrid systems of ICP with conductive nanotubes and other fibrous conductors. Innovative processing technologies
specifically tailored to the new materials were also developed. The project aimed to dramatically extend the current performance
and processability of ICP and alternative materials to enable significant replacement of metals in EMI shielding and ESD
protection applications.
This book will benefit plastics converters who wish to take full advantage of the potential of conductive plastic materials.
Practical Guide to Green Technology for Ground Engineering
Author
Abrahams Mwasha
Over the last 50 years there has been rapid development of construction techniques, analytical methods and materials for use
in ground engineering. One of the major techniques which has been developed is soil strengthening or reinforcement whereby
man-made elements are included within geological material to provide a stabilised mass. Various products have been developed
for retaining systems, slope stabilisation, etc.
More recently, environmental concerns and the focus on sustainable development have led to the examination of materials based
on renewable resources for use in ground engineering.
In this book, the applications of both vegetable and man-made fibres in situations where there is a requirement for short-term
ground reinforcement are examined and discussed. The use of vegetable fibre geotextiles (VFG), particularly in erosion control
and soil reinforcement, is covered in detail, with examples from various civil engineering applications.
Polymers - Generation, Assessment and Control
Authors
Sergei Levchik
Marcelo Hirschler
Edward Weil
This Practical Guide presents one of the most complete overviews of this important topic, covering smoke generation (including
obscuration, toxicity, corrosivity), small and large scale smoke assessment, regulation of smoke, and methods of controlling smoke
by plastics formulation. In particular this book focuses on the assessment of fire hazard and fire risks from combustion products
and is an important book for plastics processors, regulatory personnel, and fire research and safety engineers.
This book presents a state of the art overview of smoke formation from natural and synthetic polymeric materials. Also presented
is a discussion on why different commercial polymers have different intrinsic tendencies to generate smoke and ways in which
smoke generation can be assessed. Mechanisms and general approaches for decreasing smoke formation are examined.
This book also gives an overview of flammability tests for measuring smoke formation. In particular, the criticality of assessing
smoke formation in realistic scale is discussed. An overview is provided of regulations, codes and standards for critical
application of polymeric materials where smoke generation is controlled. Common commercial approaches to decrease smoke
formation in specific polymer systems and for specific applications are also presented. Finally, a balanced opinion on the
controversial issue of smoke and associated combustion gases is given.
Thermal Stability of Polymers
Author
T. R. Crompton
In recent years numerous research papers have been published on the changes in chemical structure and in physical properties of
polymers when they are exposed to heat over a range of temperatures. For example, these changes can occur at any time during the
injection moulding of the plastic, in the subsequent processing and in its end-use application when exposed to elevated temperatures.
Thermal stability is a very important parameter which must be taken into account when selecting polymers whether for their use as
constructional or engineering applications or in the packaging of food at high temperatures.
The mechanisms by which such changes occur are many and it is important to know what these are and to be able to measure
the rate of change of polymer structure and its dependence on temperature and time. Development of an understanding of the
mechanisms of thermal degradation will help the chemist to develop materials with better thermal stability. This is particularly
important in newer developments in engineering and aerospace.
This book reviews in nine chapters the measurement of these properties in the main types of polymers in use today. Numerous
techniques are discussed ranging from thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared and nuclear magnetic
resonance based methods to pyrolytic techniques such as those based on pyrolysis, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
The book is aimed at those engaged in the manufacture of polymers and the development of end-use applications. It is essential
that students of polymer science should have a thorough understanding of polymer stability and an additional aim of the book is to
help in the development of such an interest.
Blowing Agents & Foaming Processes 2012
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
These proceedings contain all the presentations from this conference which is now in its fourteenth consecutive year. As the only
conference tailored to the specific needs of the polymeric foam industry, this event provided a forum for speakers to showcase
new materials and processing technologies that will improve current application performance and benefit from improving or
replacing existing material and process selections.
As raw material costs still continue to pose a significant economic challenge to manufacturers in high volume markets, end-users
are increasingly sourcing novel materials that represent cost-effective alternatives to traditional choices. This conference was
an opportunity for companies using or considering using expansion processes. For many, foamed substrates can offer the answer
to these ever spiralling expenses as blowing agents and blowing gases are excellent “fillers” and have the dual benefits of saving
material and reducing weight (which in turn reduces transportation costs).
Today there are numerous solutions on offer - new methods, resins, technology, processes and additives and it seems that demand
for higher performance and lower costs is set to once again drive technical developments in polymeric foams.
Design of Extrusion Forming Tools
Edited by
Olga Carneiro
Joao Miguel Nobrega
The design of extrusion forming tools (dies and calibrators) is a difficult task usually performed by the employment of
experimental trial-and-error procedures, which can hinder the performance and cost of the tools, may increase the time to market
of new extruded products and limit their complexity.
The main objective of this book is to provide detailed information on the design of extrusion forming tools. It describes the main
problems to be faced when designing dies and calibrators, the most relevant polymer properties to be considered in the design
process, the specific problems related to several types of conventional extrusion dies, and recent developments on the design of
special dies and process modeling. It will be an updated and uncommon book on the subject, where each chapter is prepared
by internationally recognized experts. Having in mind its nature, it is expected to become a useful reference book for higher
education students (both undergraduate and graduate ones), teachers, researchers and engineers active in the extrusion industry.
Manufacturing, Processing & Machinery
Practical Guide to Rotational Moulding, 2nd Edition
Rotational moulding (also called rotomoulding or rotocasting), is a low pressure, high temperature manufacturing process that
offers a very competitive alternative to blow moulding, thermoforming and injection moulding for the manufacture of hollow
plastic parts. It offers designers the chance to produce relatively stress-free articles, with uniform wall thickness and potentially
complex shapes. This second edition of the very popular Practical Guide to Rotational Moulding describes the basic aspects of
the process and the latest state-of-the-art developments in the industry. It is completely revised and is extensively illustrated.
This guide will be of interest both to students of polymer processing and those who work with rotational moulding equipment.
Practical Guide to Rubber Injection Moulding
Author
John A. Lindsay
Many injection moulding processes produce rejects or scrap, because they depend on a number of variables. To eliminate
waste it is necessary to learn how to recognise the variables that cause problems, and then experiment to understand their
interdependence. This can be developed to a fine art and lead towards ‘right first time’ processing, the commercial ideal. There
are many factors that contribute to success or failure in rubber injection moulding from the design stage of a product, through
choosing and setting up machinery, to experimenting to find the best operating conditions. Varying any one factor, such as the
polymer additives, can affect the ability of the equipment to adequately process the rubber.
The book is aimed at potential customers and personnel in the injection moulding industry, and emphasises quality control,
including working to the ISO 9001 Standard. It also highlights the need to consider the economics of operation prior to taking
on new projects. Above all, the customer-manufacturer relationship is emphasised at all stages. The customer is encouraged to
examine the capabilities of the manufacturer, and the manufacturer is encouraged to develop a good understanding of the exact
requirements of the customer. This book is of value to all areas of a company, from those who purchase raw materials to those
working in design, technology and production. It will provide a guide for automotive component buyers and should also be useful
to a CEO or board member who is new to the industry.
Food Packaging and Food Alterations: The User-oriented
Approach
Author
Salvatore Parisi
The so-called HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) acronym is well known in the food industry in relation to the
management of microbiological, chemical and physical risks. With relation to HACCP risks, packaging materials should be studied
and recognised as one of key factors affecting food safety.
HACCP studies seem to highlight the role of food productions. On the other hand, detailed information about packaging materials
are needed. This lack of information is very evident for Official Inspectors (Hygiene and Preventive Medicine), Veterinary Auditors
and Food Operators. Consequently, the role of food packaging is known but its implications are often difficult to be understood.
The first objective of this title is to provide detailed and comprehensible information about packaging materials. Food Operators
and Official Inspectors are not accustomed to understanding similar concepts (chemical and physical properties, marketing, QC
failures). Consequently, a descriptive approach will be used to explain the world of packaging materials, differences between
various packaging categories/subclasses and regulatory implications (REACH, BRC-IoP, etc.).
The second objective is to provide the reader with a detailed selection of food failures and different causes:
• The incorrect design of package materials, or
• The incorrect storage and use of package materials, or
• Lack of technical information, or
• Synergetic effects (packaging & food-related causes).
Every situation is described and analysed with the aim to provide a reliable diagnosis of the problem (microbial spreading,
alteration of shelf-life values, unpleasant appearance, possible safety problems).
This volume is intended as a practical guide on food packaging and HACCP implications and a quick reference to Official Safety
Inspection bodies, students and researchers from academia and industry.
Environmental, Health & Legislation
REACH USA 2011
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
30 November 2010 marked the deadline for chemical producers and importers to register all high volume and potentially toxic
substances. Chemicals that have not been registered with the requisite safety information by this date are to be withdrawn from
the market under the “no data, no market” ruling, giving the potential to cause untold chaos in chemical supply chains. Indeed,
successes and failures from this first set of REACH registrations in 2010 are expected to impact the use of products on the EU
market and beyond, as well as influence chemical legislation initiatives across the globe. In particular, industry and regulators
will become engaged with Evaluation during 2011, where data submitted in registration dossiers are reviewed and potentially
challenged.
In 2011 customers in the EU will begin facing the knock-on requirements of registrations from 2010, changes in classification
under the EU implementation of the Globally Harmonised System (GHS), conditions imposed by Exposure Scenarios and even ‘uses
advised against’. Not only are there widespread concerns over the EU’s implementation of the GHS for the classification, labelling
and packaging of substances (CLP), but 2011 also brings new obligations, such as the need to notify substances of very high
concern (SVHC) to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). In the US plans to introduce the GHS will undoubtedly cause similar
fears.
At the same time, the next registration deadline is only 2 ½ years away. This second phase of Registration presents additional
management hurdles, as it involves a large number of substances that may be relatively ‘data poor’ compared with substances
registered in 2010. Companies must already begin planning, in particular with regards to budgeting for this next step in REACH.
2011 therefore presents industry and regulators with a critical year for gaining experience with how REACH actually works
in practice. In turn, changes in official guidance and a legislative review in 2012 offer the possibility of improvements to the
workability of REACH.
Whether you’re a cosmetics company, an aerospace manufacturer or a raw material supplier, REACH applies to you. These
proceedings cover all the presentations from the conference which enveloped some of the vital lessons that have been learned,
how the next deadlines in 2013 will affect the way you do business and what damage limitation controls can be put in place for
2011 when many fail to meet their obligations.
Extractables and Leachables for Pharmaceutical Products 2011
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
The examination of extractables and leachables from materials in contact with a drug product or the patient is growing in
importance due to increased regulatory scrutiny from organisations such as the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the
European Medicines Agency (EMEA). Regulators are concerned with the interaction of various drug delivery devices, such as
metered dose and dry powder inhalers (MDI and DPI) and now parenterals and ophthalmics are of increasing interest, as well as
pharmaceutical process equipment.
Extractables and leachables assessment of all materials and especially from elastomeric and plastic components forms an
integral part of the submission for approval of a new drug system or medical device. It is therefore essential that any company
involved in the supply chain - from raw material suppliers, processors, convertors to the pharmaceutical supplier - is fully aware
of the latest developments and best practice in generating test results and data to support successful regulatory submissions to
both the FDA and EMEA.
These proceedings cover all the presentations from this conference which brought together the pharmaceutical supply chain to
discuss the latest research in minimising the risks associated with extractables and leachables.
Lipid Nanocarriers in Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy
Edited by
Eliana Souto
This book introduces fundamental principles of lipid nanocarriers science relevant to cancer therapy. The first in this field, it fills
a need for an accurate, coherent and authoritative introduction to lipid nanocarriers focusing in cancer therapy; both because
of the growing popularity of these modern drug delivery systems and also because of the emergent need of dealing with cancer
treatment.
Active drug delivery and targeting using nanobiotechnologies has become one of the most successful strategies to approach
chemotherapy. This book deals with lipid nanocarriers for targeted delivery to tumours of various organs and combination of
these with other methods of treatment of cancer such as radiotherapy, diagnostic and imaging analysis. Lipid nanocarriers are
also used for gene therapy for cancer.
Also addressed is how diagnostic strategies with lipid nanocarriers can be combined with therapeutics, which will be important
for the personalized management of cancer.
Cancer chemotherapeutic drugs are also being used as immunosuppressive agents in the chronic treatment of non-neoplastic
diseases. The scientific research in this field has been focused on the development of strategies to target and deliver several
cancer chemotherapeutic drugs to decrease citotoxicity. These include both carrier- and receptor-mediated nanocarriers. Being
biodegradable and biocompatible systems, lipid nanocarriers have been extensively explored to increase its therapeutic index,
reducing adverse side effects to ultimately extend life-span of patients.
Furthermore, a familiarity with lipid materials science will enable scientists to conduct rational performulation studies, to
understand and optimize formulations, drug delivery systems and their manufacturing processes as well as associated process
analytical technologies and quality by design.
Update on Chitosan: A Non-Viral Gene Delivery Vector
Authors
Viola B Morris
Chandra P. Sharma
Among the various natural polymer-based gene delivery vectors, chitosan is the most prominent. As a biocompatible,
biodegradable, nontoxic and easily modifiable material, chitosan has been widely researched for a variety of biomedical
applications such as wound healing, drug/gene delivery systems, implant coatings and tissue engineering/regeneration.
Chitosan, being a linear cationic polysaccharide, consists of 14 linked glucosamine partly containing N-acetylglucosamine.
It was first described as a delivery system for plasmids by Mumper’s group in 1995. The role of chitosan in gene delivery was
supported by its ability to protonate in acidic conditions and to form complexes with anionic DNA by electrostatic interactions. The
biodegradable cationic polymer chitosan is capable of forming small and stable toroidal complexes with plasmid DNA and provide
protection against DNase that is comparable to PEI.
The objective of this book is to integrate the concepts related to chitosan and its derivative-based drug/gene delivery carriers.
For example, the success of the gene delivery system mainly depends upon the uptake by the cells, unpacking behaviour of pDNA/
siRNA from the vector and its intracellular trafficking. Such concepts are introduced and discussed, in addition to the various
applications of chitosan as a drug delivery system in wound healing, tissue engineering and in gene delivery.
This book is an excellent resource for the academic faculty, graduate students and professionals interested in chitosan-based
drug/gene technologies.
Update on Life Cycle Strategy for New Implants and Medical Devices
Author
Marvi Sri Harwoko
With the emergence of new therapies for diseases which affect vital organs either partially or as a whole, the complexity of the
parameter interaction and the variety of new discoveries opens many possibilities to implement these proposals into clinical use.
Unfortunately, this diversity can also handicap an efficient design process.
Therefore, a practical tool has to be developed, which in the early development stages, systematically supports the product and
process optimization by preparing and providing information and knowledge.
This book details such a methodology for systematizing the product design process, which uses a knowledge-based design
process, a customer-oriented engineering process, and a business supporting life cycle model.
This book describes how this methodology can be used as a product design guidance tool for supporting the development of a new
implant. The methodology resolves the development complexity by using a series of logical steps and provides researchers with
the means to assess these steps as soon as possible for anticipating and removing subsequent useless steps. The methodology
requires a systematization which supports a procedure for sustainable development and which will guide the industrialization of a
new therapy in life sciences.
Update on Polymer Based Nanomedicine
Authors
Andreas M. Nyström
Xianghui Zeng
Yuning Zhang
Jakob Regberg
Polymers are one of the most applicable and clinically relevant materials for constructing nanomedical systems. These systems
are expected to have a future in the clinic; nanomedical constructs will have wide implications for how we treat and diagnose
society’s most complex diseases, such as cancer, inflammation and genetic disorders.
This update focuses on describing the fundamentals of controlled polymerisation techniques and methods for constructing
advanced polymer architectures to be used in polymer based nanomedicine. We review this growing field, which uses recent
advances in polymer chemistry and conjugation techniques to construct advanced nanoparticles.
One focus of this update is to give examples of recent developments in drug delivery, ligand targeted therapy and diagnostic
imaging techniques. One section is devoted to the latest developments in nanomedicine - theranostic systems - which combine
therapeutic delivery with diagnostic imaging capabilities in the same device. Such systems will play a crucial role in developing
personalised medicine.
Update on Polymers for Ocular Drug Delivery
Author
Atish S. Mundada
The eye is the most easily accessible site for topical administration of a medication. Drugs are commonly applied to the eye for
localised action on the surface or in the interior of the eye. A major problem in ocular therapeutics is the attainment of an optimal
drug concentration at the site of action. Poor bioavailability of drugs from ocular dosage forms is mainly due to the precorneal
loss factors which include tear dynamics, non-productive absorption, transient residence time in the cul-de-sac, and the relative
impermeability of the corneal epithelial membrane. Due to these physiological and anatomical constraints only a small fraction of
the drug, effectively 1% or even less of the instilled dose is ocularly absorbed.
The effective dose of medication administered ophthalmically may be altered by increasing the retention time of medication in
contact with the surface of the eye. To date, Pharmaceutical Technologists have tried to develop different novel formulations like
gel, ocular inserts, collagen shields, implants, liposomes, nanoparticles, penetration enhancers and in-situ gelling systems, in
order to increase the bioavailability and duration of the therapeutic action of ocular drugs and polymers plays an important role
in all these approaches.
This book provides detailed information regarding all such polymers which have been used and shown to be excellent in
improving the bioavailability of ocular drugs.
Update on Polymers for Oral Drug Delivery
Authors
Fang Liu
Emma McConnell
Samuel Pygall
The preferred route for drug delivery remains the oral route, but oral drug delivery has now developed beyond traditional dosage
forms such as tablets and capsules. Nowadays it is possible to use polymers to allow drugs to be targeted to specific sites in the
gastrointestinal tract, and to extend the drug release profile. In addition, polymers can be engineered to allow oral delivery of
such complex molecules as proteins, peptides, and even genes.
This book gives a comprehensive summary of oral drug delivery systems, both conventional and novel, and the ways in which
polymers have been adapted for these systems. Particular attention is devoted to gastrointestinal physiology and the physiochemical
properties of polymers in order to understand the factors affecting their performance in practice.
This update will interest everyone involved in the pharmaceutical world, whether in academia or in industry. It will be of particular
value to those responsible for designing new oral drug delivery systems involving polymers. It will provide a useful reference
text both for researchers and manufacturers, and will also be a helpful introduction for students of all levels to the application of
polymers in pharmacy.
Applied Polymer Composites
This international peer-reviewed journal, will cover all aspects of polymeric composites. The journal has been specially created
to publish significant results immediately as Rapid Communications, and important results as short papers; in addition to regular
Research Papers and Review Articles.
The aim of this journal will be to provide a balance between materials science and mechanics aspects, basic and applied
research, and high technology and high volume (low cost) composite development.
The launch of a new international peer-reviewed journal needs some justification in an already well covered subject area of
composites science. We believe the journal will offer a unique opportunity for authors and researchers to publish their latest
results in an optimum amount of time.
The Journal offers rapid and reliable communication of new basic fundamental results and of experience gained during
development of technology from laboratory to pilot plant to industry and finally into the market. The Journal aims to bridge the gap
between research and development and the practical, commercial applications of polymers in a wide range of industries.
Current developments and likely future trends will be covered across key areas of the composites industry, together with existing
and potential opportunities for the innovative use of composites materials.
