CPS Members have Success in Antarctic Competition
As part of the celebrations of 50 Years at Scott Base the City Council and Leigh's Construction ran a photography
competition. In the Cold Snaps section of Antarctic entries Annette Preen and Ron McKie were finalists. Congratulations!
New Members
There are three new members this month: Gay Clearwater, Mark Fuller and Fleur Wiig.

CPS FIELD TRIP ' Urban Views - Lyttelton' which was not held on October 14th and did not
leave from Van Asch College at 8.00 a.m.
Due to somewhat unpleasant weather conditions I cancelled the trip. I was most gratified that one
good keen man did turn up and I was reluctant to turn him away. However! The rain was just
starting and the wind was reasonably ferocious and I felt that even the heaviest tripod would
have trouble staying vertical.
I have found a piece of poetry which I feel says everything about the day - and it is as follows :-
When the hounds of Spring are on Winter's traces
The mother of months in meadow or plain
Fills the shadows and windy places
With lisp of leaves and ripple of rain.
Algernon Charles Swinburne 1837 - 1909
Those present on this non-field trip were Brian Milner and Chris Newman. The Quiz wasn't but will
be next time - perhaps.
CPS FIELD TRIP TO SUMNER HELD ON SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2007
We met at 7.00 a.m. on a sunny Sunday morning at the Wind Surfers' area off Linwood Avenue. The
light was past it’s best but there were some swans swanning and some rats - er - ratting I was
informed by a passer-by that the rats were over half a metre long, so the ones I saw must have been
just babies! Tahi - Dave and Nancy's bull mastiff hunter/killer was shown a nice fresh rat hole and
ignored it with spectacular disinterest! The swans did what swans do. It was low tide and even the
mud was only muddy and just slightly pongy. We
moved on. Tidal Way with it’s uncompleted multistory
appartment block and big crane was more
interesting. The dribble of water running over the
mud was worth a shot or two. Moving on again
we stopped briefly at the Yacht Club where
nothing was sailing because it is hard to do so
successfully in mud - or so I'm told! On to
McCormacks Bay where there was bound to be
birdlife to photograph, or at least people, or even
dogs. Birds, yes, two paradise ducks and
seventeen grey ducks, white faced herons nil;
people one, dogs two (with the one person). Nice
walk though.
Sumner clock tower with CPS loungers lounging, Photo by
Dave Robertson
Next move was to Monks Spur lookout. Big ship
off Godley Head but too far away to photograph well. Nice view across the water to Shag Rock - with
sun straight into the lens! Down from Monks Spur to Shag Rock with Peacock's Ride on the other
side of the road. With an incoming tIde, we had to make reasonable haste to photograph the rock
with all its homing pigeons and no shags. Then we adjourned across the road to Peacock's Ride for
morning tea.
Our next stop was the clock tower beside Scarborough Fare in deepest Sumner where some persons
were able to photograph board riders, and other people other people. Some, like me, just lolled
3

against the wall! Then it was up to Nicholson Park on top of
Scarborough Hill where we were able to shoot flowers and people,
loll about, think about having lunch and the quiz, do the views,
walk, play with the cat and walk to the vehicles to get things, then
walk back again for the forgotten things and then back again for
the forgotten, forgotten things, then finally sit down to have lunch
and then amend the quiz because it was the Coastal Views quiz
and didn't quite fit for Sumner.
After all this eating and wandering and playing, we went over to
Captain Taylor's Mistake where we were amazed by the number of
bodies spread out over the sand and the many people walking the
tracks. The trip ended here.
Lesley Tuffley won the single pen - single brain section of the quiz
with Percy Acton-Adams coming a close second. The multi brain -
single pen section was won by Dave and Nancy Gibb.
Those attending this trip were the aforementioned four plus Judy
Reij, Chris Newman, Brian Milner, Dave Robertson, Dave
Rushworth and Diana and Ian Andrews.
BELGIAN ART PHOTOGRAPHY 1900
I had a totally charming experience recently. A friend lent me a book of autochrome images by a
Belgian photographer, one Laendert Blok (born in 1885 and died in 1986). He was in the vanguard of
early photographers who in 1907, worked with early colour. At this time there was the first debate as
to whether photography was or was not an art form. Autochrome has a pointillist, soft romantic look
quite beautiful to behold. Blok was ahead of his time in another aspect of his work. He made large
panaroma landscapes up to two metres wide and large format photographs. But his true passion was
for autochrome. This was an early type of coloured slide made by baking wafer-thin emulsion of
different coloured starch grains onto a glass negative. A laborious process where the optimal mixture
could ultimately be viewed as a colour slide.
In addition Blok used spectracolour, where each shot produced three negatives in colour and then
three colour positives. These were laid one on top of the other to produce a composite slide. So
sandwiching is not new!
Other photographers such as: Hector Collard, Edmond Sacré, Gustave Marissiaux, Léonard Misonne
and Edouard Hannon along with Leendert Blok wished to use photography for reproducing beauty
and express their inner feelings and thoughts. Their vision had been disputed by painters and art
critics, who were of the opinion that photography, being a product of a technical device, did not
belong in a museum. The invention of the ‘fuzzy rendering process’ and the introduction of the
manipulated image moved photography closer to the contemporary art movements in painting.
Previous objections gradually disappeared.
Some of those named above were not enamoured with autochrome, because it could not be
manipulated in any way, but Gustave Marissiaux certainly used the technique as did Blok.
Alfonse van Besten around 1900 coloured his black and white plates by hand and became enthused
with the artistic possibilities of autochrome. To him it meant at last there was a means to recreate on
a glass plate the colourful world of pictorialism.
Paul Sano’s interest lay in exploring the limits of the autochrome process. He created collages and
experimented with multiple exposures and microphotography. Charles Corbet delighted in creating
delicate images of his beloved posing in naturalistic and outdoor settings.
Florent van Hoof in September 2007 expressed, on seeing autochromes by Charles Corbet, “I was
awed by the delicate colours, the pointillistic effect – and of course – by the images. The drawing
power of an autochrome pulls one inside its image and the intimate feeling creates joy which is
endlessly fascinating. Autochromes take you back to another age with sheer delight and pure
nostalgia – I confess … I lost my soul.” She claims that autochromes deserve a rightful place in the
photographic pantheon, I share her wonderment in this medium and as a purist I am very much at
home with the concept and execution of the works.
Behave honourably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs
all you can give."
