The TMT Site Testing Team
The TMT site selection results presented here could not have been
obtained without the hard work of a large group of people :
– The core Site Selection Team : Bob Blum, Edison Bustos, Sebastian Els, Paul Gillett,
Brooke Gregory, Jerry Nelson, Angel Otárola, Reed Riddle, Matthias Schöck, Juan
Seguel, Warren Skidmore, Eric Steinbring, Tony Travouillon, Joselino Vasquez,
Konstantinos Vogiatzis, David Walker, Lianqi Wang
– Approximately 90 people were directly involved in the site selection work
– A special thanks to everybody who has supported, and is still supporting, the TMT site
selection program, in particular the people at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American
Observatory (CTIO), the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and the
AURA New Initiatives Office (NIO), the Universidad Catolica del Norte in Antofagasta,
the Observatorio Astronomico Nacional de San Pedro Martir, Gemini Observatory,
Palomar Observatory, the Submillimeter Array (SMA), the University of Hawaii Institute
for Astronomy (IfA), the University of Lethbridge, the University of Moscow, the South
African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), and the entire TMT project including its
partner institutions and external reviewers.
TMT Site Testing
We started by considering all potentially interesting sites, anywhere in
the world
Pre-selection of five candidate sites based on satellite studies of cloud
cover and precipitable water vapor and on previously existing
information
On-site testing with identical equipment
– April 2003 to November 2009
Strong emphasis on calibration of instrumentation to ensure data
quality and comparability of results
Final (TMT internal) site testing report and review in April 2008
Site Testing Computer System
Impractical for manual monitoring, control of site at all times
– Manpower
– 24/7/365 operations
If one robotic system is challenging, five could be a nightmare!
– Standardization is key: all sites must operate the same way
Hardware, software installation
Data quality
Reproducibility of results
Fault diagnosis
Custom software suite
– Several instruments used commercial software, integrated into system
– Robotic & instrument software created in house
– 7 operating systems
UNIX/Linux flavors, OS X, Windows
– 12 scripting and programming languages
IDL, Bash scripts, C, C++, awk/sed scripts, Expect scripts
GNUplot, Grace
