Dear Readers,
For us, comfort is a long-standing tradition. Already since 1774 we have been doing our best in order
to enable as many people as possible to walk and stand comfortably in our products, both at work
and during their leisure time. In order to be able to provide you with top quality we use the best
natural materials, for example, high quality jute and fine natural cork. We also make sure that the
manufacturing process is carefully monitored. The basis of our sandals, clogs and shoes is the flexible
deep footbed which is adapted to the anatomy of the foot. The original Birkenstock product.
For an optimum fit, we offer our footbed in two widths. Please note the corresponding symbols before
the Item numbers.
On the following pages we are presenting you our 2007 collection. You will find something brand new
on pages 62-63, where we are show casing our closed shoes for sophisticated tastes for the first
time. Incidentally: if you have an individual wish, for example, if you are looking for a particular model
in a different colour or require a particular size, contact your retailer or simply contact us. You will find
more information on this on page 41.

The Birkenstock-Fitness-Sandals
The first Birkenstock sandals were launched in 1964. Their
name: “Fitness Sandals”. Today, this model is also known
under the name of “Madrid”. The original name appropriately
describes the function of this model. Because
Birkenstock Fitness Sandals offer you a bonus: they exercise
your feet and legs with every step you take.
And this is how the Fitness-Sandals work:
The relationship between the strap and footbed causes a
gripping reflex of the foot with every step taken. During the
gripping reflex, both the feet and ankle muscles are tensed,
as the muscles responsible for the toe movement are
located in the ankles. The muscles are then totally relaxed
again when the heel is set down. In this way, there is constant
tensing and relaxing of the muscles with every step
taken with the Madrid model. Gentle exercise for your feet
and legs. In addition, the circulation of the legs is boosted.
The model “Ibiza” also has this effect- you can choose either
of the models.

Birkenstock’s thong sandals are made with the utmost care. We have meticulously tested and adjusted our thong
sandal – until it was best suited to the foot’s anatomy. By the way: prolonged wearing of fashion shoes that are
too narrow can result in your toes being painfully constricted – Birkenstock’s thong sandal helps return your toes
to their natural position. We therefore recommend that you choose the “normal” width when selecting a model.
The “narrow” width footbed has been designed specifically for very thin feet. Our two-width system means that
you’ll always find the perfect fit. Try it out for yourself!

cut gives your feet a good hold in the footbed and guarantees natural movement.
The cut form of the model “Monterey” has an extra long foot guide, thereby distinguishing

For a shoe to fit perfectly, it has to have the proper
length and width. When making your purchase, be sure
that your foot has enough room in the width as well as
several millimetres of space in the toe and heel areas
to allow you to move freely.
Our tip: always try on new Birkenstocks while standing,
leaving the straps unfastened – you’ll find it easier to
determine the ideal width and length for you. As a
result, you’ll have a better posture and your
Birkenstocks will last longer.

stability while the upper, denser jute layer absorbs

Our materials: natural
Sandal or Clog - the foundation of each and every
model is a footbed fashioned from natural and renewable
materials. We only use the finest, high-quality cork
made from cork oak bark, which grows back on the tree
after removal. The rubber tree’s natural sap (latex) is
another crucial component of the footbed. Each
footbed also contains two layers of jute yarn, made
from the fibres of a plant that grows in the Southeast
Asian marshlands. These quality materials come
together and – by virtue of their composition – form a Carefully peeled: bark from the cork oak Valuable resource: bark of the cork oak
flexible, light, moisture-absorbent, heat and cold-resistant footbed. All these factors contribute to the high comfort
level and the pleasant foot climate provided by Birkenstocks.
Our fit: perfect
Many shoes are tailored far too narrowly to accommodate the foot’s natural shape. Our models are made to
be comfortable – with plenty of toe room so your feet can stay healthy. The original Birkenstock footbed was
designed to mirror the shape of a healthy foot. It supports the foot while allowing it to move freely. Since
healthy shoes are a product of the perfect fit, each of our models comes in two different widths: normal for
sturdy feet; and narrow for particularly narrow feet. Pay close attention to the corresponding symbols and try
out the two-width system yourself.

Comfort is a difficult thing to describe. It’s something that’s much easier to sense – slipping into a pair of Birkenstock
sandals, for example, after a strenuous day in pumps, pointy-toed, flats or narrow-fitting shoes. The Birkenstock comfort

Sandals and other heelless shoes enable you to walk
naturally and help you to assume natural body posture
(Fig. 5): your calf muscles relax allowing for 90 per cent
of your bodyweight to be supported by the rear of your
foot – in particular by the heel bone, the foot’s strongest
bone (Fig. 3). The heel bone works as a natural
shock absorber with every step you take. It is equipped
with a strong layer of protective tissue that cushions
every bit of physical impact. A pump works differently:
bodyweight is shifted forward – forcing the ball and
front of your foot to carry up to 50 per cent of it (Fig. 4).
Toes and the midfoot bones are subjected to excessive
stress, causing the calf muscles to contract. The
body assumes an unnecessarily crooked position –
with the pelvis tilting forward and the spine contorting
in an unnatural position. Switching to heelless shoes is
therefore advisable to avoid foot, leg and back injuries.

The Birkenstock-materials
Smooth Leather
The leather we use is super thick (about three millimetres) yet supple. Natural leather is instantly
identifiable by its smell and the different contours and colours that characterise its surface. We do
not use any artificial dyes to cover up these differences as we want to keep the leather open-pored
and breathing.
Suede Leather
We only use extra-strong, highly durable leather for our suede leather shoes. Here too, the
slight differences in the structure are the hallmark of real leather.
Nubuk Leather
For Nubuk leather the natural structure of the leather is buffed up, giving it a velvety look.
Embossed Leather The bark-like surface structure gives the Birkenstock leather a particularly
expressive character.
Birko-Flor ®
Birko-Flor is a skin-friendly, tear-resistant, easy-care material. The upper layer of this material has
a leathery structure and a soft fleece is built into the lower layer. Birko-Flor is a progressive and
inexpensive alternative to leather.
Birko-Flor ® -Nubuk
A special finishing process gives this material a surface layer which doesn't just look like leather
but feels like leather too.
Birko-Felt
Birko-felt is made of a woolpulp mixture and synthetic fibre felt. This mixture is practically untearable, but still
permeable to air and skin-friendly.
Microfibre
The high-quality microfibre we use for our Birkenstock shoes has a delicate look that resembles
Nubuk leather. This material is especially light, very permeable to air, durable and skin-friendly.

Birkenstock quality
Quality is our top priority. For our leather models we use only cow leather which is 2.8 -3 millimetres thick. As it is
unsplit, all valuable qualities such as the typical surface structure, toughness and longevity of this natural material
are preserved. Leather of this thickness is not readily available everywhere. Due to the particular breed and husbandry
conditions of the cattle as well as climatic conditions, only leather originating from Central Europe meets our criteria.
In addition, we only buy from tanneries which comply with the strictest environmental regulations. Moreover,
our strict quality controls guarantee that only pieces of leather without any defects are used. Pieces having cicatisation
caused by mosquito or tick bites or thorn scratches are sorted out.
When selecting the raw materials for our footbed, only the best will do: only especially
pure and high-quality natural cork is used here. And the latex milk taken from the
bark of the cork tree is processed in many steps subject to careful controls into an
adhesive substance which holds the cork granulate together. Due to its tensile
strength, latex keeps the footbed elastic and ensures a long lifetime wear. The textile
plant fibre jute also has to first be roasted, peeled, combed, cleaned and then made
supple before it can be spun into jute fabric and then used to stabilise our footbed and
absorb moisture.
Cork bark, stamping residue
and granulate
Another quality feature that distinguishes Birkenstock
from other brands is the elongated cut of the upper
material toward the heel. This holds the feet firmly in the
footbed and brings them to their optimal position when
the heel is set down during the walking motion.
Our buckles are also made with the greatest care: each
buckle is protected against corrosion with baked-on
enamel, making them especially durable. The clamps
attaching the buckles to the upper material are curved
inwards so that they cannot be felt. For an optimum
hold, the buckles are clamped in four places.

sole. We place great value on the soles in use. They are
made of EVA (ethylvinylacetate) and are distinguished
by a high degree of abrasion resistance and insulation
properties.

Many times we are required to spend a fair amount of time on our feet. Without supportive
footwear, foot and leg fatigue can set in very quickly. Even worse, permanently
damaged feet and a variety of other health problems can result. Our recommendation is:
