NSP 4625C<br />

Transcultural Nursing<br />

Immersion Course,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Offered as needed)<br />

This course unfolds in two phases:<br />

a comprehensive Orientation and<br />

Education Phase (I) and a Population<br />

Service Phase (II). The two stages<br />

are designed to be synergistic in<br />

nature. Phase I helps students to<br />

develop a deeper appreciation for an<br />

underserved region of the world. Phase<br />

I will set the stage for the immersion<br />

and learning that will take place during<br />

Phase II when students will provide<br />

basic healthcare and health education<br />

to an instructor chosen underserved<br />

population in the world. Air and<br />

ground travel are required. Current/<br />

valid <strong>Florida</strong> Registered Nursing<br />

License, good health, and a clear<br />

Background Check/Drug Screen are<br />

required. An International Passport<br />

may be required. Expenses associated<br />

with the course are the responsibility<br />

of the student. Prerequisites: Student<br />

must be a Registered Nurse and have a<br />

clear background check/drug screen.<br />

The Professional Nurse<br />

Manager and Leader,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Spring)<br />

This course outlines the roles and<br />

functions of nurses in executive<br />

practice using the competencies<br />

identified by the American<br />

Organization of Nurse Executives<br />

(AONE). Successful nurse leaders<br />

and managers exercise complex<br />

leadership responsibilities that directly<br />

affect the quality of patient and<br />

family care in today’s multifaceted<br />

healthcare management systems. This<br />

course will address competencies in<br />

communication, knowledge of the<br />

healthcare environment, business skills<br />

and principles, and professionalism.<br />

The course content also provides<br />

a review of the material covered in<br />

the Certified Nurse Manager and<br />

Leader examination conducted by<br />

the American Organization of Nurse<br />

Executives Credentialing Center that is<br />

available to B.S.N. prepared Registered<br />

Nurses. Prerequisite: Student must be a<br />

Registered Nurse to take this course.<br />

NUR 3067C<br />

Health Assessment,<br />

4 Credit Hours,<br />

(Fall)<br />

This course is designed to develop<br />

the student’s knowledge for<br />

obtaining and recording a systematic,<br />

comprehensive health history,<br />

psychosocial assessment, and physical<br />

examination of the adult. The course<br />

involves the synthesis of nursing,<br />

biologic, psychologic, and sociocultural<br />

knowledge and theories as they<br />

apply to the findings obtained in the<br />

comprehensive health assessment<br />

of clients of various ages. During the<br />

fieldwork experience, emphasis will<br />

be placed on collection of a database<br />

through physical assessment, history<br />

taking and interviewing. Prerequisite:<br />

Admission to the RN to B.S.N.<br />

program.<br />

NUR 3080<br />

Dimensions of<br />

Baccalaureate Nursing Practice,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Fall)<br />

This course will provide Registered<br />

Nurses, who are returning to<br />

school to earn a Baccalaureate<br />

degree, an opportunity to advance<br />

professional practice concepts. As<br />

designed, the course engages the<br />

student intellectually in an ongoing<br />

professional dialogue and journey<br />

with peers, colleagues, and instructors<br />

that serves to broaden the student’s<br />

professional development and<br />

builds on preexisting knowledge and<br />

experiences. The course curriculum<br />

is written for adult learners with the<br />

characteristics of self-direction, prior<br />

experience, applicability to practice,<br />

and motivation to meet the challenge<br />

to expand their knowledge base and<br />

to utilize advanced critical thinking<br />

skills. Prerequisite: Student must be a<br />

Registered Nurse to take this course.<br />

Nursing Care of<br />

Vulnerable Populations,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Summer)<br />

Caring for the vulnerable members of<br />

society is a function nurses perform<br />

without regard for their own ambitions,<br />

personal safety, and financial security.<br />

This course is designed to pull together<br />

material from different cultures and at<br />

risk groups of individuals considered<br />

vulnerable populations. Key concepts<br />

will be discussed that will provide<br />

a basic structure for caring for the<br />

vulnerable, the relevance of nursing<br />

theories to vulnerable populations,<br />

nursing research showing the kinds of<br />

phenomena nurses study, and many<br />

ideas about learning to work with and<br />

advocate for vulnerable individuals.<br />

NUR 3767<br />

Nursing Care of Complex Clients,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Spring)<br />

This course assists the RN to B.S.N.<br />

student in the assimilation of<br />

pathophysiology, assessment, and<br />

pharmacological nursing concepts<br />

with variety complex client issues. This<br />

course provides expanded concepts<br />

related to nursing care for individuals<br />

experiencing complex alterations<br />

in health problems as they progress<br />

through a variety of healthcare<br />

delivery systems and environments.<br />

Prerequisites: NUR 3067C, NUR 3080.<br />

NUR 3826<br />

Nursing Ethics,<br />

3 Credit Hours,<br />

(Spring)<br />

This course provides an in-depth<br />

exploration of ethical principles and<br />

moral reasoning as the foundation of<br />

nursing practice. The ANA Code of<br />

Ethics will be used as a framework for<br />

examining current issues in healthcare<br />

delivery across the age span from<br />

reproductive issues to end-of-life care.<br />

Prerequisite: Students must be RNs or<br />

enrolled in a nursing program.<br />

NUR 3837<br />

Health Care Issues,<br />

2 Credit Hours,<br />

(Spring)<br />

This course provides a forum for the<br />

exploration and evaluation of concerns<br />

germane to contemporary nursing.<br />

The focus of this course is on the<br />

nursing profession and current major<br />

issues and problems that concern it.<br />

Social forces influencing changes in<br />

the nursing profession are analyzed<br />

in terms of historical antecedents and<br />

their current manifestations. Recently<br />

passed, and pending legislature at<br />

both the national and state levels is<br />

emphasized. Prerequisite: Current RN<br />

Licensure.<br />
