It is with great pleasure that I
applaud the efforts of all of our members
in the past several months. I was
amazed on the success of our Veterans
Tribute chaired by Nivia Myers, which
was held at the lodge on the 15th of
November 2008. It showed exactly
what can be accomplished when all
members pull together for one common
cause in pursuit of producing an

of those who have been taken from
our midst in the preceding twelve
months, as well as prior years, we will
conduct a program of remembrance
for both Elks and Elkettes.
This service will be held in our
Lodge Room at 1:30 pm December
7th, 2008. Please join us on this very
solemn and special occasion.
outstanding event. I also had the pleasure
of attending our annual Veterans
Thanksgiving Day Luncheon for our
Homeless Veterans which was also held
at our lodge on the 17th of November
2008 which was attended by 55 homeless
Veterans. I would like to mention
several members who I feel have contributed
significantly to our success
during my term. Ralph Chislett, as to
his participation during all our Bingo
Events, Yard Crew and House
Committee member; our Esteemed
Leading Knight Bill Henderson during
his facilitation of our annual Charity
Ball; Oscar Erice our Esteemed Loyal
Knight for the upcoming Children’s
Christmas Party, and finally Ron
Simpson, our Esteemed Lecturing
Knight for his aid in balancing our
financial business as it pertains to the
lodge and the club in general.
I personally would like to wish all
of our members a safe and wonderful
Christmas Season as we move this
lodge forward towards being one of the
best and well run lodges in our district
and our state.

THE JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL PARADE

The Junior Orange Bowl parade, which
will take place on Tuesday, December 30th,
2008, is a wonderful time for Elks to participate
in this youth orientated parade.
For the last two years, Elks have had an
inter-lodge event, taking the Drug Awareness
trailer, antique cars, Elroy the Elks mascot, and
members from Miami Lodge, North Miami
Lodge, and South
Miami Lodge. We
pass out drug
awareness packets
to youngsters along
the parade route.
The most fun
is trying to keep up
with Al Reker
who’s driving the
truck that pulls the drug awareness trailer! We
certainly get our exercise!
If you are interested in participating, please

good time will be had by all.
HELP OUR DISABLED MEMBERS
If you have a walking cane that is no longer
being used, please consider bringing it to the
lodge for our supply room. We do get calls for
this type of item that may seem unimportant;
however, for someone who needs cane assistance,
it can be a precious loaner.

BLOOD DRIVE
Tuesday, December 9th • 4 to 9 pm
What better way to finish out the year than
by helping our fellowman. We are very proud of
our last one where 28 pints were collected.
Please make this our best one yet. Bring a
friend. As we have told you previously, you are
treated warmly by a professional team. You are
checked out thoroughly to insure your own
safety and your blood can help to save the life of
someone in need. If you donate, you are given
a spaghetti dinner and quality T-shirt.
Our love goes out to our partner in this venture,
Theresa Beno, who became ill on a recent
visit to North Carolina. We wish her
a speedy recovery and return to us

NOW ON SALE IN LOUNGE

Miami Elks Lodge 948 Charity Ball, you missed
an extraordinary event. You also missed out on
receiving a copy of the stunningly produced
Charity Ball Journal. This year’s Journal truly
accentuates the event’s theme “New York, New
York” and contains many new sections that
showcase Committees, Lodge Trivia and Past
Exalted Rulers to name a few. You can get your
copy at the Lodge Bar for the very reasonable
price of $15. Just come in and ask one of the
bartenders for a copy today.

Elkette’s News & Views
When you read this, Thanksgiving will have
passed. My hope is that you spent a happy
and joyous day surrounded by all those you love.
Good news! Our bakeless bake sale was a
resounding success! We are well over our budget,
thanks to Rita Shannon’s hard work.
The Bazaar, held in October, brought us
$1,800+ for our charity fund. Thanks to Florence
Allen and all who participated.
The December business meeting will be held on
December 10th, the SECOND Wednesday of the
month. This is a very important meeting as we will
form a nominating committee, hear the first reading
of a proposed by-law change (see below) and finalize
our Eggnog party plans.
It is my hope, that every Elkette who possibly
can will join us at the Eggnog party on December
17th at 8 p.m. in the ballroom. We will feast on the
good food we bring to share, drink Edie’s special

punch, and share our good times with the Elks when they join us after their meeting.
Please notify Pat DelToro (305) 598-2671 of the dish you will bring to our feast. It should
be enough to serve at least 8 people. Meat will be furnished.
Those who wish to participate in the gift exchange are to bring a $10 gift, wrapped
in holiday paper with YOUR name inside so that the recipient can thank you. Give the
exchange gift to Bea Castro and she will give you a ticket which will identify that you
have brought an exchange gift. Prizes are given for most beautifully wrapped, most
unique, etc.

Eliminate Article 4, Section 3, which says “The term of service of any officer, with
the exception of the Treasurer, shall not exceed two (2) consecutive years.”
Reason: There are often qualified ladies who would be willing to remain in office
beyond the two year limit.

OUR ANNUAL
HOOP SHOOT
COMPETITION

We’re all set to go on the morning of
December 6th
at 9:00 am with contestants; officials, line
judges, scorekeepers, etc. The local competition
is being held at Boys and Girls
Club of Miami, located at 9475 North
Kendall Drive.
One week later, on December 13th,
the District Hoop Shoot, also at the same
location, will start at 10:00 am under the
expert direction of Jack Lopez. We kindly
ask that contestants arrive thirty minutes
earlier in order to be registered and be
ready to start at the times listed above.

Seven

The number 87 has tender significance
to me. No . . . I’m not 87 years old.
Eighty seven months ago the then
Exalted Ruler of our Lodge 948, Andy
Sipos, asked me if I could write and would
I be responsible for our monthly newsletter
“The 948 Reporter”.
Without hesitation to both questions, I said
“yes”.
That was 87 months ago.
Hey! That’s only seven years and
three months.
I want to thank all of you. It’s only as
good as that which is given to me.
There’s a P.S. to this story. I’m a firm
believer that God directs our paths.
On Sunday afternoon, November
16th, I walked into the Lodge lounge to see
Dolphin football and there sat Andy Sipos,
P.E.R. with his wife, neither of them whom
I had seen in a very long time. We pleasantly
spoke of the above No. 87. He was
pleased and I...truly delighted.

Barbara “Bobbie” Wooster had been a member for
several years when we got to know her. She really
loved the Elks and her club. She loved to meet some of
us for lunch, dinner, or breakfast, and she loved the friendly chatter that went with it.
She loved the table shuffleboard game and the shuffle boarders. After her Stan
passed away, she gravitated to the Elks – and especially to the game room – as a balm
to her grief. Between her own games, she liked to sit near the score board and watch
and listen as players exchanged humor or banter or our current problems and triumphs.
Of course, Bobbie loved her Hattiesburg, Mississippi family more than anything.
In keeping with her wishes, her son Michael Wooten requested that, instead of flowers,
we send donations to:

In Michael’s words, “Dubard is the school that has been such a blessing to our
son/her grandson, Connor, in our pursuit to assist him in developing communication
skills. It was especially dear to Bobbie, too.
Bobbie was what I call a “sunshine person,” who always talked “up” instead of
“down,” often complimented but seldom complained, even of her own health as it
worsened.
She loved the Palace. When shuffle boarders and other Elks went there to visit
her, she always complimented the Palace staff on their care, friendliness, and willingness
to help.
Our last visit, before she left for Mississippi, included several of the shuffle board
women. Bobbie looked darling, neat as a pin and perky as usual. She was in an
ebullient mood as we talked and laughed for hours about a variety of subjects from our
collective youthful shenanigans to ex-husbands.
We are so thankful to have shared these wonderful moments and this laughter with
her while we still had her.
A RING OF GOLD
More than a month ago, a gold ring was lost in
our lounge area. It was found and turned in by
Charlie Williams. After much perseverance and
insistence of our good member Bob Schmidt and
after a small article for the November Reporter was
printed; it did indeed locate the rightful owner of
the ring. After a detailed description and ultimately
a perfect fit, it was returned to Member Donald
Roskind.
Two things were proven:
a. that Elks are honest and
b. The Reporter is read.
Thank you Bob Schmidt and Charlie Williams.

THANKSGIVING CAME EARLY!
At noontime on November 17th our Crystal Room was filled with
Veterans from the V.A. Hospital who had been brought here by bus to
enjoy their delicious annual Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, dressing and
all the trimmings of the season. They were the guests of our Lodge for
this special occasion and were under the special direction of our Rosalie
Walfish, our Chairlady of National Service and Veteran’s Affairs. We
were honored by our own Milton Muller, Exalted Ruler and Bill
Henderson, Esteemed Leading Knight. These are the events that make
you proud to be a member of our Miami Elks Lodge No. 948.
In addition, we owe Rosalie Walfish a special note of gratitude for
donating Thanksgiving decorations to our own Thanksgiving dinner on
Thursday, November 27th.

SUCCESSFUL VETERANS CELEBRATION
Dear Friends,
Thank you for making our Veteran’s celebration held on the
evening of November 15th a huge success. We recognized and
honored more than 100 veterans who came with their families and
friends to the marvelous celebration that we dedicated to them.
It was heartwarming to see them as they humbly arrived to
our Lodge to celebrate the freedom of this country. It was very
humbling also to listen to their stories as they were told during the
night. The Color Guard was beautiful; Jim from the Earthshine
did a wonderful job playing Taps to recognize our fallen veterans.
Walter Cordle touched everyone with his two songs. The Veterans
enjoyed going around the room looking for their young pictures in
uniform.
We want to thank the Church who meets in our Lodge for
gracefully allowing us to use their equipment to show the slide
presentation.
I want to thank The Activities Committee who worked so
hard with me for months trying to put this event together. More
importantly, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude
to all our dear members who came to the Lodge on Saturday
very early in the morning. They worked so hard in decorating the
hall, cooking for you, serving dinner, collecting tickets, doing
whatever was needed to make sure that the evening was nice and
smooth.

SMILES! On the evening of meeting night, Nov.
12th, a second event was ongoing. It happened to be the
birthday of our Exalted Ruler, Milton Muller. So smiles
were in order and in addition, “Happy Birthday” was
sung by the membership at the close of the meeting.

as a Guard to the Unknown Soldier in Washington D.C.,
the highest honor in the military service.
