(Located inside the Briar Ridge Subdivision, South and East of the Roswell Country Club) OTHER NEW DEVELOPMENTS: The Alien Apex Resort Theme Park will offer more for visitors to do when they come to Roswell, while adding competition to existing gift shops to stabilize retail prices, making our visitors happier with their Roswell UFO/Alien encounter. This project will draw more tourists to Roswell, the annual UFO Festival and to our UFO retail stores, while promising hundreds of new jobs to the economy. The next step in this process is to secure the business plan, development plan and six other financial support documents. To do this, Mayor LaGrone and others went to Santa Fe on 12-5-06 and 1-11- 07 to get support from the Governor and the NM Department of Tourism Cabinet Secretary Cerletti. This project has been submitted to the State Legislators to gain the State’s backing and financial assistance to help pay for these professional and financial services.......more to come!!! SBDC DIRECTOR HONORED Gene Simmons, director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at ENMU-Roswell, has been named the 2006 winner of the New Mexico SBDC’s Estrella Award. The annual award, first presented in 2003, was established to recognize outstanding, exemplary service by SBDC employees from any of the state’s 19 centers or the Santa Fe lead center. Award recipients are nominated by their peers, with special emphasis given to the “star” qualities exhibited by the honoree in working with small business owners and entrepreneurs in their communities. Simmons has been the director of the Roswell SBDC since 1989. In that first year, the center served 87 clients and the total amount of approved loans was only $135,000. In the years since, the center has worked with more than 5,000 clients and has helped them to obtain more than $112 million inloans to start or expand their businesses. In 2006, the center worked with 390 clients, helping them obtain $8,973,239 in capital with which they started eight new businesses and expanded 15 existing businesses. This in turn created 250 new jobs and helped retain an additional 45 jobs. Not all clients, of course, are seeking help in obtaining capital. Clients can request individual business consulting, assistance with marketing research, help with patents, referral to programs such as Sandia Laboratory’s free technology assistance program, import/export assistance, financial analysis, or any other assistance that could help them start or grow their business. Services at the center are free and available to all, whether they are current business owners or are just exploring the idea of starting their own business. In addition to his position as director of the Roswell SBDC, Simmons is the vice president of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico and is an ex officio member of the board of the Chaves County Development Foundation. He has served on many business and economic development committees in both Chaves and Lincoln counties, and has owned numerous businesses over the years. He currently owns Town and Country Entertainment Center in Roswell. He is also the co-inventor and co-owner of two patents, one of which is currently in negotiation for development. A graduate of Union College, Cincinnati, Ohio, Simmons is a Certified Professional Manager and a Certified Business Analyst. These qualifications enable him to perform intricate cash market value analyses of existing businesses and produce economic impact studies. These services are also offered free of charge at the Roswell SBDC. In addition to the Estrella Award, Simmons was the recipient of the New Mexico SBDC’s first Star Performer Award in 2000. 11
