Travel to Tanzania
Travel to Africa is not included in the course fee and can be
organized by the course organizers or by the participants
themselves. Meeting point for the start of the course is in Dar es
Salaam. Accommodation in Dar es Salaam and Ifakara will be
organized by the course organizers.

Clinical Course
Dental Practice with Limited Resources
October 24 – November 5, 2011
Ifakara and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
A 2-week course organized by Secours Dentaire International
In collaboration with the Swiss Tropical Institute, University of
Basel, Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, University of
Bern (Switzerland), the St. Francis Designated Referral Hospital,
Ifakara, Tanzania and the Tanzanian Tranining Center for
International Health (TTCIH), Ifakara (Tanzania).
Postgraduate training for young dentists in basic surgery in a
dental clinic of a tropical hospital with limited resources.

Learning objectives
The course that will be held in the SDI-dental clinic of the
St. Francis Designated Referral hospital Ifakara (SFRH), as well as
in the modern Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health,
aims to teach young graduated dentists with limited clinical
experience in basic oral surgery in managing clinical procedures
like simple and complicated tooth extractions, abscess incisions,
management of traumatic maxillofacial injuries and other
surgical treatments.
The participants will have the opportunity to see behind the
curtain of the daily routine in a tropical hospital guided by
doctors of the St. Francis Referral hospital and get a picture of a
typical African Country from a non tourist point of view.
The diversified program includes
City tour of Dar es Salaam and overview of dental practice in
the largest town of Tanzania
Course fee
The total course fee is CHF 2’900 and must be paid in advance.
This sum includes the registration fee (CHF 500) which is due at
the moment of acceptance, the tuition fee and travel within
Tanzania, as well as accommodation and full board during the
time of the course.
As SDI is a non profit organisation, all of their experts as well as
the instructors of the course are voluntary. The full course fee is
invested locally and is part of the strategy to make the SDI-Clinic
of Ifakara financially in depended.
Participants
Due to the infrastructure, the course is limited to 8 participants.

• Transport to Ifakara by the Tanzanian-Sambian-Railways or Minibus
• Clinical and theoretical Course at the SFRH, Ifakara
• Prophylactic visits in schools of Ifakara
• Get a overview of the acuctual Malaria research of the Swiss
tropical Institute
• Walking tour in the Udzungwa
National Park to the Sanjee water
falls
• Stay one night in the Mikumi National Park and sea the unique wild
life with game drives
