WHAT IS THE PARISH<br />
ACTION PLAN<br />
The b<strong>is</strong>hops <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United <strong>St</strong>ates define a Chr<strong>is</strong>tian<br />
steward as one who:<br />
Receives God’s gifts gratefully<br />
Cultivates those gifts responsibly<br />
Shares those gifts in justice and love, and<br />
Returns those gifts to <strong>the</strong> Lord with increase.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> week you will receive a Par<strong>is</strong>h Action Plan that will<br />
help you understand how stewardship affects our par<strong>is</strong>h<br />
and archdiocese. The objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>h Action<br />
Plan are:<br />
To tell you <strong>what</strong> resources—both human and financial—are<br />
necessary to provide all <strong>the</strong> current<br />
min<strong>is</strong>tries, programs, and services in <strong>the</strong> par<strong>is</strong>h.<br />
To tell you about <strong>the</strong> possibility and need for additional<br />
min<strong>is</strong>tries and services in <strong>the</strong> par<strong>is</strong>h.<br />
To help you see <strong>the</strong> connection between <strong>the</strong> sharing <strong>of</strong><br />
your time, talent, and treasure and <strong>the</strong> par<strong>is</strong>h’s ability<br />
to provide current and future min<strong>is</strong>tries and services.<br />
We hope that <strong>the</strong> <strong>plan</strong> will help you see <strong>the</strong> breadth and<br />
depth <strong>of</strong> min<strong>is</strong>try that takes place here at <strong>St</strong>. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Alexandria</strong>. We have many exciting things happening<br />
here.<br />
Please carefully read <strong>the</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>h Action Plan. Meditate<br />
on <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> stewardship. Most <strong>of</strong> all, let us pray<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
Lord, <strong>what</strong> do you want to do through me to<br />
accompl<strong>is</strong>h your will for your par<strong>is</strong>h

We extend our hands and hearts to you in Chr<strong>is</strong>tian hospitality, and thank God that<br />
you are with us, whe<strong>the</strong>r you are long-time, or newly arrived par<strong>is</strong>hioners. If you have not<br />
reg<strong>is</strong>tered, please pick-up a Reg<strong>is</strong>tration Form (at <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church), fill it out and ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />
place it in <strong>the</strong> collection basket or mail it to <strong>the</strong> par<strong>is</strong>h <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />
PARISH MEMBERSHIP: Reg<strong>is</strong>tration and regular use <strong>of</strong> envelopes are essential to <strong>the</strong> proper admin<strong>is</strong>tration<br />
<strong>of</strong> a Par<strong>is</strong>h and are necessary in order to become a properly identified member <strong>of</strong> a Par<strong>is</strong>h Family.<br />
ANOINTING OF THE SICK<br />
If you have a serious illness, are facing hospitalization and/or surgery,<br />
you should arrange to receive <strong>the</strong> Sacrament <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Anointing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sick.<br />
You may remember “Last Rites” but <strong>the</strong> correct name <strong>is</strong> Anointing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Sick, which <strong>is</strong> not limited to <strong>the</strong> dying and which should be celebrated<br />
before <strong>the</strong> sick person <strong>is</strong> unconscious, comatose or in <strong>the</strong> last stages <strong>of</strong><br />
death. The Anointing <strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered each weekday morning upon request,<br />
during <strong>the</strong> 7:25 AM Mass. If you or family members are unable to attend<br />
Mass, Fr. John will come to <strong>the</strong> home on THURSDAYS, 9:00 a.m.<br />
Arrangements must be made by <strong>the</strong> prior Monday afternoon to allow<br />
time for proper preparation.<br />
“The Sacrament <strong>of</strong> Penance”, can be celebrated during our monthly Reconciliation Prayer Service<br />
which <strong>is</strong> at 7:00 pm on <strong>the</strong> first Wednesday <strong>of</strong> each month.<br />
It <strong>is</strong> imperative to be present for <strong>the</strong> entire service for <strong>the</strong> participation in <strong>the</strong> service <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> penance.<br />
The next service will be<br />
September 2, 2009<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> Sacrament <strong>is</strong> also <strong>of</strong>fered by appointment only: (676-4403)<br />
Sacrificial Giving!<br />
A normal Sacrificial Giving program <strong>is</strong> a 10%<br />
contribution to a charitable organization or church.<br />
<strong>St</strong>. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine’s program asks for 4% <strong>of</strong> your income,<br />
2% for our general par<strong>is</strong>h support and 1% for<br />
maintenance and repairs, both through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> our<br />
weekly Offertory envelopes. Ano<strong>the</strong>r 1% goes to our<br />
ongoing faith formation programs through <strong>the</strong><br />
Diocesan Development Fund Drive (envelopes and<br />
statements sent by <strong>the</strong> Diocese). For example, if you<br />
make $500.00 a week, your total contribution at 4 %<br />
would be $20.00 a week.<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r way to give back to God a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blessings He has<br />
given to each <strong>of</strong> us <strong>is</strong> to mention <strong>St</strong>. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine’s in your will.<br />
Please give prayerful thought to supporting <strong>St</strong>. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine’s<br />
in th<strong>is</strong> way.<br />

MISSION 2009<br />
Join in <strong>the</strong> worldwide M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> Jesus…….<br />
Next weekend, we are invited to join in <strong>the</strong> world wide m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> Jesus through our prayer and<br />
support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Propagation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faith.<br />
What better way to celebrate 2009 than to help bring <strong>the</strong> life-giving message and <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t to<br />
millions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poorest people in <strong>the</strong> world today We can do th<strong>is</strong>—all <strong>of</strong> us—by praying daily for <strong>the</strong><br />
m<strong>is</strong>sionary work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, <strong>of</strong>fering our personal crosses for m<strong>is</strong>sionaries and those <strong>the</strong>y serve,<br />
and making a financial gift.<br />
Next weekend our par<strong>is</strong>h welcomes Deacon Richard Cover, to speak at all our Masses on our<br />
bapt<strong>is</strong>mal call to be “m<strong>is</strong>sionaries.”<br />

Small Faith Communities<br />
Min<strong>is</strong>try<br />
The “Small Faith Communities” Min<strong>is</strong>try invites all par<strong>is</strong>hioners to<br />
participate in a faith sharing process and to join <strong>the</strong>ir meetings on<br />
<strong>the</strong> week <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time starting<br />
August 17 through August 23, 2009. The goal <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> process <strong>is</strong> to<br />
ass<strong>is</strong>t us to deepen our relationship with Chr<strong>is</strong>t and have a living,<br />
vibrant relationship with him by reflecting, sharing on and<br />
responding to <strong>the</strong> Sunday readings. The Scripture message for<br />
th<strong>is</strong> week <strong>is</strong>: “To whom shall we go You have <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> eternal<br />
life.” As people <strong>of</strong> faith, we make that dec<strong>is</strong>ion to follow Jesus, but<br />
day in and day out we still are faced with indec<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> following<br />
through. Jesus <strong>of</strong>ten asks us to take <strong>the</strong> more difficult dec<strong>is</strong>ion.<br />
Sometimes, <strong>the</strong> signs are not clear and <strong>the</strong> way <strong>is</strong> cloudy.<br />
We need to allow time for prayer and to look for Jesus<br />
out ahead <strong>of</strong> us to go <strong>the</strong> right way.<br />
There are 17 Small Faith Groups meeting on different days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
week and on different times <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day. You may choose <strong>the</strong><br />
group that best suits your schedule.<br />

HELP OUR<br />
TROOPS CALL<br />
HOME<br />
The Knights <strong>of</strong> Columbus are once again<br />
collecting donations to purchase pre-paid<br />
telephone calling cards to send to our<br />
military men and women stationed in <strong>the</strong><br />
Mid-East and to <strong>the</strong> wounded recovering<br />
in military hospitals. Last year, because<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine's par<strong>is</strong>hioners<br />
along with par<strong>is</strong>hioners <strong>of</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>hes in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Temecula</strong> Valley areas, <strong>the</strong> Knights were<br />
able to send 800 cards to <strong>the</strong> troops over<br />
<strong>the</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tmas Holidays. Th<strong>is</strong> year we<br />
hope to send 1,000 prepaid cards to our<br />
troops. The Knights purchase special<br />
military telephone cards that allow a 30-<br />
minute telephone call to <strong>the</strong>ir loved ones<br />
back home from <strong>the</strong> Mid East and longer<br />
calls from military hospitals. The<br />
Knights are charged $10.00 for each card.<br />
The Knights are requesting <strong>St</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine's<br />
par<strong>is</strong>hioners to once again help <strong>the</strong><br />
Knights purchase telephone cards th<strong>is</strong><br />
year.<br />
One hundred percent <strong>of</strong> your donations<br />
will be used to purchase <strong>the</strong> prepaid<br />
telephone cards to our Troops. The<br />
Knights provide all admin<strong>is</strong>trative and<br />
mailing cost to send <strong>the</strong>se cards to <strong>the</strong><br />
Troops. To contribute to th<strong>is</strong> Calling<br />
Card Fund, mail your contribution to<br />
Knights <strong>of</strong> Columbus, C/O Fred Peri,<br />

Twentieth Sunday in<br />
Ordinary Time<br />
MAKING THE MOST OF THE<br />
OPPORTUNITY<br />
The Letter to <strong>the</strong> Ephesians speaks to us, urging<br />
w<strong>is</strong>dom in our d<strong>is</strong>cernment <strong>of</strong> how to live <strong>the</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tian<br />
life. We are to “watch carefully . . . making <strong>the</strong> most <strong>of</strong><br />
opportunity,” and “try to understand <strong>what</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Lord” (5:15).<br />
We are prom<strong>is</strong>ed a generous outpouring <strong>of</strong> God’s<br />
help in our attempts to live <strong>the</strong> gospel: <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t. Th<strong>is</strong><br />
<strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> “living bread,” <strong>the</strong> Body and Blood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord. To<br />
those who can only think literally, th<strong>is</strong> seems not only<br />
fool<strong>is</strong>h, but repulsive as well. We need to have more w<strong>is</strong>dom,<br />
understanding, and faith to understand properly<br />
<strong>what</strong> we have been asked to believe.<br />
For our bread, which <strong>is</strong> food, and our wine,<br />
which <strong>is</strong> drink, to be transformed from things that give<br />
life to <strong>the</strong> body into Chr<strong>is</strong>t, who gives life to <strong>the</strong> soul,<br />
ano<strong>the</strong>r great transformation must take place. Not only<br />
are <strong>the</strong> physical elements transformed, we are transformed<br />
as well. If we become people <strong>of</strong> W<strong>is</strong>dom, eating<br />
<strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> banquet, we become one with Chr<strong>is</strong>t, who <strong>is</strong> one<br />
with God. We become <strong>the</strong> Body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t, h<strong>is</strong> living and<br />
real presence.<br />
FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom for us <strong>is</strong> fool<strong>is</strong>hness to <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
But <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> a saying, “The pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pudding <strong>is</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />
eating.” When we eat th<strong>is</strong> bread and drink th<strong>is</strong> cup, we<br />
become <strong>what</strong> we eat; that <strong>is</strong>, we become one with <strong>the</strong><br />
Lord and with each o<strong>the</strong>r. The pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> in our love.<br />
If we love God, if we love each o<strong>the</strong>r, and if we love o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
and serve <strong>the</strong>m in charity, our love will be living<br />
pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> God’s life and work in <strong>the</strong> world. We truly become<br />
<strong>the</strong> Body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t.<br />

¿QUÉ ES EL PLAN DE ACCIÓN<br />
PARROQUIAL<br />
nuestra parroquia y nuestra arquidióces<strong>is</strong>. Los<br />
objetivos del Plan de Acción Parroquial son:<br />
Decirle qué recursos, tanto humanos como financieros<br />
se necesitan para <strong>of</strong>recer todos<br />
los min<strong>is</strong>terios, programas y servicios actuales<br />
en la parroquia.<br />
Informarle sobre la posibilidad y la necesidad<br />
de <strong>of</strong>recer min<strong>is</strong>terios, programas y servicios<br />
adicionales en la parroquia.<br />
Ayudarle a ver la conexión entre el compartir su<br />
tiempo, talento y tesoro y la capacidad de la<br />
parroquia para proporcionar min<strong>is</strong>terios y<br />
servicios, actuales y futuros.<br />
Esperamos que el <strong>plan</strong> lo ayude a ver la amplitud<br />
y pr<strong>of</strong>undidad del min<strong>is</strong>terio que se lleva a<br />
cabo en <strong>St</strong>. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alexandria</strong>.
parroquia<br />
