Wind Power 6 To help save the environment, Bob and his team build a recycling plant and wind farm in Sunflower Valley. Wind turbines generate power by using the wind to turn the blades of the turbine. The kinetic energy of the turning blades is converted into mechanical energy that can be used to generate electricity. A wind farm is a group of wind turbines in the same location used for production of electric power. Individual turbines are interconnected with a medium-voltage power collection system and communications network. A large wind farm may consist of a few dozen to about 100 individual wind turbines, and cover an extended area of hundreds of square miles, but the land between the turbines may be used for agricultural or other purposes. A wind farm may be located off-shore to take advantage of strong winds blowing over the surface of an ocean or lake. Build It! Pinwheels are like wind turbines—they need wind to move. Fun Facts • In 200 B.C., people in China and the Middle East used windmills to pump water and grind grain. • The first modern wind turbine was built in Vermont in the early 1940s. • Wind farms currently produce enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 600,000 families in the United States. • The largest wind turbine in the world, located in Hawaii, stands 20 stories tall and has blades the length of a football field. • An average wind speed of 14 miles per hour is needed to convert wind energy into electricity. • A single wind turbine can produce enough electricity to power up to 300 homes. Did You Know The Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm is the first wind farm to be built in New Jersey, and the first coastal wind farm in the United States. The wind farm is located in Atlantic County, NJ and is visible to more than 30 million Atlantic City visitors each year from downtown Atlantic City and the Atlantic City Expressway.
