new dinner menu insert has been popular with members.
Chef nate has introduced a weekly menu of fabulous
dinner selections offering a fine variety of entrees that
keeps the menu new and fresh each week. this weekly
menu also allows the chef to take advantage of the week’s
promotions on quality products from our vendors, which
combats rising food costs. in this way, the Club is able
to offer items such as fine seafood and beef entrées at
reasonable prices during these promotions.
i’m happy to announce that many new members have
joined Highland this season! Melissa is doing a fine job
by keeping abreast of marketing opportunities and maintaining
good follow-up and record keeping. We hope to
keep this momentum going! Please take a look at the list
of new members in each newsletter, and reach out to welcome
these new members. We are thankful for all current
members who are referring new members and forwarding
prospective members. Let’s keep the ball rolling!
As the spring rain has finally ended
and summer has arrived, the Fourth
of July weekend kicks off a month of
fun-filled activities. On Friday, we
will get the weekend started with
a ladies 9-hole shamble with the
“Firecracker” Cocktail Party in the
evening. Saturday morning, the men
will compete in a 4-man team point
event with the Ultimate Pig Roast
later that evening at the “night of
Blues”. On Sunday afternoon, the
holiday couples will take place,
followed by an all american BBQ
event in the evening. this will be a
wonderful holiday weekend to gather
the family and enjoy the club.
Following the long holiday weekend,
we will have the second Member
July Pro Shop Hours of Operation
SHOP: tuesday-Sunday: 8aM-7PM
RANGE: tuesday-Sunday: 8aM-7PM
Guest of the month; starting at 2PM on Thursday, July 14.
the Parent-Child will take place on Saturday, July 16, running
with tee-times from late morning through the afternoon.
this event is open to all ages and levels and is a great
way to get your son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter,
grandfather, or grandmother involved in a fun event. On
Sunday, July 17, we will crown the Couples’ Club Champions
in a Pinehurst alternate shot event. the tdga Jan taylor will
be held on Wednesday, July 20, at 1:30PM, with a dinner
following. For the final event of the month, we will have the
popular, rally for a Cure.
So far, we have had some wonderful events that have taken
place. This year’s Senior club championship gross title was
won by denny Spencer, who shot two solid 72’s for a 144
total. On the net side, dave Smith blistered the course with
a 13 under par performance over two days. Congratulations
to both and all who played over the weekend. In the
ESPN Challenge, Kevin Tackett and George Skaff captured
the net division with a great score of 57 in the 2-man best
ball event, while the gross title was captured by Rick Elrod
and Bill Holtfreter. Both teams advanced to compete in a
regional qualifier in August. In the first Member Guest of
the year, dave Varanese, lyle Vogel, Paul Symington, and
rick Vogel were victorious. to end the month, we had
the always fun Summer solstice, where Jake Holmes, Todd
hawley, Steve Mossing, and dave russell won the best
ball competition. In the Emergency Shoot-out, Joe Belinske,
Steve Welly, trevor Faust and Chuck Winger outlasted
everyone to capture the fun event.
as the spring has gone and summer approaches, the club is
off to a good start considering one of the wettest springs in
history. as we move forward, i would like to thank everyone
for the continued support and look forward to a successful
2011 season. Let us continue to make Highland Meadows
the place to be in the toledo area.

“It’s a sure sign of summer if
the chair gets up when you do”
-Walter Winchell
With July upon us, sticky, hot
weather is right around the
corner. With last year’s record
summer still fresh in our minds,
i thought of several misconceptions
about last summer that
got me some funny looks.
First of all, when you manage
turf at such low mowing heights
DATE CHANGE: 10 MiLE CREEK
Please note the date change for the annual 10 Mile
Creek tournament.
MOvED TO: Friday, August 26
(around an eighth of an inch for greens, and less
than a half inch for tees and fairways) it is important
to recognize that such diminutive plants don’t
stand up well to heat, humidity, and heavy foot/cart
traffic. Often, members will liken the conditions of
the greens to their brown lawns. Fortunately, your
lawns aren’t mowed daily at a fraction of an inch or
have 200 people walking around them in golf spikes
every day. It takes a slew of fertilizers, chemicals,
equipment, and careful attention to keep the playing
surfaces in acceptable shape.
That being said, there will be times during the summer
when certain maintenance practices will be implemented
to alleviate the heavy summer stress on
the small, delicate plants. First of all are everyone’s
favorite – the dreaded yellow ropes. the ropes are
not just for keeping carts out of wet spots, but more
importantly allow us to distribute and move cart and
foot traffic. If yellow ropes are near a green edge,
chances are we are trying to protect a section from
increased foot traffic. Please divert your foot path
around the ropes as much as possible. this spring,
ropes have been necessary to protect the areas
recovering from the spring water/heat damage.
Another practice we may use at times is the skipping
of ‘clean-up’ passes on greens, tees, or fairways. the
‘clean-up’ pass is where the mower cuts the outer
the rough. Since these areas get mowed and driven
over more than any other areas on the golf course,
we may stay off of them once or twice a week to
keep the turf healthy and reduce the compaction of
the soil. as you have seen in years past, when the
conditions get hot, it’s often the edges of fairways
and greens that struggle first.
Hopefully, Mother Nature will be a little kinder to
us this summer, and we won’t have to do anything
unusual. Just know that your maintenance staff is
always diligent and tries to do what’s best for the
health and long-term playability of your golf course.
If you ever have questions about what’s going on,
please contact me anytime. If such practices are in
use and noticeable, I will be sure to cover them with
photos and information on the maintenance blog.
now throw some sunscreen and bug spray in your
bag and get out there!
T.G.i.F Couples’ Golf League:
The Couples’ Friday Night golf season is still
going strong! The first night of TGIF golf was a
fun-filled scramble playing with the theme of
yellow, green, and red. The outfits were colorful
as was the food and drinks! the second
tgiF night was 60’s night. although we only
completed 3 holes of golf because of storms,
it was an entertaining night of 60’s clothes,
food, and camaraderie. We still welcome anyone
interested in playing with Friday night
Couples golf; it isn’t too late to join! We have
many more themed golf nights coming up!
SPeCial nOte: July 29 will be guest Couples’
night – all Couples’ league golfers are encouraged
to invite a guest couple to play with on
that night. if you have any comments or questions,
please email TGIF.2011@yahoo.com.
