Handsets
Handsets form the interface between user and
technology. They let you communicate clearly
despite background noise. They also provide a
certain degree of privacy when you do not want
to be overheard by people around you.
Our handsets are intended for mobile and
stationary use. Thanks to our modular design
system, the optimum configuration can be
created for every application.
If required, we will adapt our products to your
personal needs. We also develop custom
solutions to order.
HOLMCO products are made in Germany to the
highest quality standards. They are designed to
last, but if repairs are required we stock spare
parts to keep our products working even longer.
Microphone
Dynamic microphones
Dynamic microphone
Dynamic microphones use the principle of electromagnetic
induction. The dynamic microphones from HOLMCO work
on the moving-coil principle. They contain a diaphragm that
is fixed to a moving coil. The coil is positioned in a static
magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet. As the
sound waves hit the microphone, they set up vibrations in
the diaphragm, which are transferred to the coil.
The movement of the coil in the magnetic field induces a
signal voltage that is proportional to the incident sound.
Dynamic microphones do not need a power supply.
They can tolerate very high sound pressures and are also
extremely durable and reliable, so are ideal for use in harsh
environmental conditions.
Electret microphones
Condenser microphone
The electret microphone is a special type of condenser
microphone. A moving diaphragm and a fixed back plate
form a parallel-plate capacitor, which is charged with a
DC voltage. The sound waves hitting the microphone make
the diaphragm vibrate. As a result, the capacitance varies,
which causes voltage variations across the resistor that are
proportional to the incident sound signal. In the electret
microphone, an electric charge is permanently »frozen«
in the diaphragm or in the back plate.
This removes the need for a DC voltage for the transducer,
so an electret microphone only needs a power supply for its
output amplifier. The electret microphone has the merits of
good signal quality and low cost. Electret microphones are
extremely small, making them easy to fit even into compact
housings. They are relatively insensitive to electromagnetic
interference, which is particularly important for digital
radio communications.
3
Handsets
Directional pattern
The directionality or polar pattern of a microphone describes
how its sensitivity varies with the angle of incidence
of the sound. It is basically determined by the mechanical
design of the microphone.
Directional patterns
Omnidirectional
A microphone that has an omnidirectional pattern is equally
sensitive to sound waves from any direction. All ambient
noise is picked up, so that the user at the other end of the
line gets an acoustic impression of the situation at the
place of use.
The omnidirectional characteristic is ideally suited to applications
with low to moderate noise levels. If high levels of
background sound make communication difficult, however,
then a noise-cancelling microphone is preferable.
Cardioid
A microphone with a cardioid pattern picks up sound primarily
from the front and from the side. The microphone
largely screens out sound coming from behind.
This directional pattern is the ideal choice when the interfering
noise source lies behind the microphone. The cardioid
characteristic makes clear communication possible even at
high background noise levels.
Figure of eight
A microphone with the figure-of-eight pattern detects
sound from two opposite directions. Sound coming from
the side is suppressed. The figure of eight is useful when
unwanted noise is mainly coming from the side.
4
Handsets
Earpiece
In our headsets and headphones we use exclusively dynamic transducers as earpiece
capsules. These capsules contain a moving coil positioned in a static magnetic
field generated by a permanent magnet. The coil is fixed to a diaphragm.
The voltage signal applied to the earpiece causes the coil to vibrate, and these
vibrations are transferred to the diaphragm. The vibrations in the diaphragm
generate sound waves that are proportional to the applied signal voltage.
Dynamic transducers can produce very high sound pressures and are also extremely
durable and reliable, so are best suited for use in harsh environmental
conditions. They provide good sound reproduction quality at an attractive price.
Dynamic transducer
Cradle
For use in vehicles, the handset must be held securely in the cradle to prevent it
falling out when the vehicle accelerates sharply. This is achieved by a handset
retainer: a sturdy mechanism that holds the handset in place. Some handsets
include a special cradle-release button. For stationary use, for instance in
control centres, a special handset retainer is not required.
The cradle often includes a cradle switch. This is a switching contact that actuates
when the handset is removed or replaced, allowing detection of when the
handset is resting in the cradle.

Handsets
For roadside emergency phones
The N-40N handset is designed for installing in roadside emergency phone
units. A special cradle for vertical installation has been developed for this use,
ensuring the unit has a very low profile even with the handset in place.
This means that the N-40N can fit even in shallow enclosures. The handset has
no PTT button, but instead includes a reed contact for indicating on-hook/offhook
(cradle switch function). The noise-cancelling microphone enables good
speech quality even in noisy environments, for instance passing traffic.
The cradle has a purely mechanical function; the handset is not connected
to the cradle. The N-40N handset is held with an easy-release lock in the cradle
and can be picked up readily even by inexperienced users.
• The software that executes the operating functions can be modified
to meet customer requirements.
• The N-32 can be provided with software filters that are designed to a
customer specification for different ambient conditions, e. g. to suppress
noise or echoes.
• The N-32 can be delivered with an Ethernet interface
(that allows the use of VoIP) or a LVDS interface.
• Customers can select the colour they require for the body, keypad face and
coiled cable, as well as the lettering and symbols printed on the keypad.
• The N-32 can be fitted with a different cable if required.
