Welcome to the 108 th annual meeting of the Cordilleran
Section of The Geological Society of America, hosted by
Centro de Geociencias and Instituto de Geología of the
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México . The meeting
theme “The Southern Cordillera and Beyond” emphasizes the
fact that geology does not stop at the U .S . border . Canada,
the United States, and Mexico share the same tectonic plate
and also face similar environmental and resource problems .
In an effort to promote a more active communication among
geologists from the three countries, the 108th meeting of the
GSA Cordilleran Section is being held in Querétaro, central
Mexico, at Hotel Misión Juriquilla .
Querétaro lies at the crossroads of three main geologic
provinces: the Neogene Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the
mid-Tertiary Sierra Madre Occidental silicic large igneous
province, and the Cretaceous-Paleocene Sierra Madre
Oriental fold-thrust belt . The urban area occupies a continental
basin bounded by the intersection of two late Tertiary
extensional fault systems affecting late Miocene and early
Pliocene volcanic rocks . Classic fossils sites with Hemphillian
to Blancan vertebrate fauna are located only 25-30 miles to
the north .
Mexico is a key region for understanding the geologic
evolution of North America as well as an important tectonic
element that interacted with South America and the
Caribbean . The meeting will focus on the advances in the
geology of the Southern Cordillera, including such topics as
silicic magmatism, rifting of the Gulf of California and Gulf
of Mexico, the Laramide fold and thrust belt, the Trans-
Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Middle America subduction
zone, and Caribbean interaction with North and South
America . The meeting will also host a symposium on the
Amalgamation and Breakup of Pangea (IGCP Project 597),
along with an array of applied theme sessions on water management,
soils subsidence and fracturing, ore geology, and
geothermics .
Venue
Located in the geographic center of Mexico, Querétaro
is a modern industrial city, built around a beautiful colonial
center . The meeting is being held at Hotel Misión Juriquilla,
which occupies the main building of an 18 th century hacienda
and includes large patios, two restaurants, a pool, and
a spa . The hotel is located just 15 km away from the historic
downtown, which was declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO, for the exceptional examples of baroque architecture
and for having retained the geometric street plan of the
Spanish conquerors side by side with the twisting alleys of the
Indian quarters .
This field trip in the Acatlán Complex of southern
Mexico will examine the geological record of an orogen on
the western periphery of Pangea: 1) Triassic-Jurassic deposition
of a clastic sequence intruded by tholeiitic mafic dikes
that underwent high-grade metamorphism and migmatization
and exhumation on the western margin of Pangæa;
2) Late Carboniferous – Early Permian synchronous arc
magmatism and pull-apart basin sedimentation followed by
Triassic thrusting on the western periphery of Pangæa; 3) A
Devonian-Permian sequence synchronous with Carboniferous
extrusion of high-pressure rocks into the upper plate above a
subduction zone on the western periphery of Pangæa .
2. The Late Cretaceous Mexican Fold-and-Thrust
Belt and its Possible Relation with the Accretion of
the Guerrero Terrane. Michelangelo Martini (mmartini@
geologia .unam .mx), Elisa Fitz, Timothy Lawton . Sun .–Tue .,
1–3 April . US$344 .
The fieldtrip will provide a comprehensive overview of
the Mexican Fold-Thrust Belt (MFTB) in the Sierra Madre
Oriental of central Mexico, and the possible suture belt of the
Guerrero Terrane in the Sierra de Guanajuato . During the
first two days we will visit the Sierra Gorda and Tolimán area
in Querétaro state with spectacular landscapes, and excellent
exposure of the MFTB structures . Aspects on the regional
structure, syn-tectonic sedimentation, deformation style,
shortening gradients, temperature and timing of deformation
will be addressed during the first day of the field-trip . During
the second day we will observe changes in the Cretaceous
stratigraphy and structure as we move to the western edge of
the MFTB in the Tolimán area . We will discuss the tectonic
setting of the Tolimán rocks and of their secondary structures
. During the third day of the trip we will move to the
Guanajuato area, where we have the opportunity to observe
the suture belt between the Guerrero and Sierra Madre terranes
. This belt is a ~70 km-wide deformation zone, where
continent-recycled meta-sedimentary rocks of the Sierra
Madre terrane overthrust arc-recycled meta-sedimentary
rocks of the Guerrero Terrane . Based on the fieldtrip geologic
observations we can discuss the possibility that the Guerrero
Terrane accretion triggered the Late Cretaceous MFTB of the
Sierra Madre Oriental .
3. Environmental Geochemistry of the Pozos Mining
District, Guanajuato, East-Central Mexico. Alejandro
Carrillo (ambiente@geociencias .unam .mx), Juventino
Martínez, Gilles Levresse . Wed ., 28 March . US$80 .
2012 GSA Cordilleran Section Meeting 33

The participants will explore the Mining District of
Mineral de Pozos and its environmental aspects (mine tailings
deposited without any environmental concern whatsoever) .
This historical mining site is one of the oldest in Mexico,
beginning in the 1600´s . The exploitation was focused on
silver and gold in the sulfur-rich epithermal veins hosted by
deformed Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks . The site
was abandoned by early 1940´s, with a “Bonanza” between
1892 and 1897 . We will visit several ancient exploitation
“Haciendas”, which look more as ”ghost places”, than exploitation
plants . Have your camera ready for “shoots into the
past” from this, once very active and economical center of
central-east Mexico . The field trip is one full day from 7 am
to 7 pm .The field trip will include lunch, and will start, and
end, at the lobby of Hotel Mision Juriquilla, Querétaro .
4. Sierra de Catorce: Remnants of the Ancient Western
Equatorial Margin of Pangea in Central Mexico. José
Rafael Barboza-Gudiño (rbarboza@uaslp .mx) . Universidad
Autónoma de San Luis Potosí; Roberto S . Molina-Garza .
Centro de Geociencias, UNAM; Timothy F . Lawton .
New Mexico, Las Cruces . Sun .–Tue ., 25–27 March . US$520 .
This field trip begins and ends in San Luis Potosí
(~200 km north of Querétaro) . Participants will explore
turbiditic and wildflysh sequences of a triassic submarine fan
system (Potosí Fan) or Upper Triassic Zacatecas Formation,
and volcanic successions of the Lower Jurassic volcanic arc
of western North America in north-central to northeastern
Mexico (“Nazas Arc”) . Both paleogeographic elements,
outcropping in the Mesa Central province, are linked to the
ancient western equatorial margin of Pangea during the early
Mesozoic time . The trip will examine also the Middle to
Upper Jurassic continental fining upward succession (La Joya
Formation) and transgressive Upper Jurassic-Cretaceous
cover exposed in the Sierra de Catorce uplift, including their
stratigraphic and tectonic relations . Several stops will show
sampling sites of new geochronologic data, which have implications
for tectonic and paleogeographic reconstruction of
central and northeastern Mexico . Field trip ends on March 27
in San Luis Potosí at 18 , but participants have the option to
stay in San Luis Potosí that night at own expense and travel
on March 28 with the field trip leaders to Juriquilla with a
stop at the spectacular La Joya Honda maar, arriving in time
for the opening reception . No additional cost will be charged
for this optional trip .
5. Late Pleistocene Rhyolitic Explosive Volcanism at
Los Azufres Volcanic Field, Central Mexico. José Luis Arce,
Instituto de Geología, UNAM, (jlarce@geologia .unam .mx);
José Luis Macías Instituto de Geofísica, UNAM, (macias@
geofisica .unam .mx) . Sun .–Tues ., 25–27 March . US$450 .
The Azufres Volcanic field, which lies in the Trans-
Mexican Volcanic Belt, holds the second most important
geothermal field in Mexico . This volcanic field is located
within the remnants of a caldera structure . At depth, the
Azufres volcanic field rests upon Miocene rocks (Sierra de
Mil Cumbres), and Miocene-Pliocene volcanics (Sierra de
Santa Inés) . The oldest volcanic products of the volcanic
field are 1 .4 Ma old basalts, followed by a stratigraphic succession
of andesites, dacites, and rhyolites forming domes,
34 2012 GSA Abstracts with Programs
lava flows, stratovolcanoes, plateau lavas, and pyroclastic
deposits with ages as young as 26 ka . In the fieldtrip we will
examine the young rhyolitic pyroclastic sequences exposed in
the southwestern sector of the Los Azufres volcanic field and
discuss the relationship of this rhyolitic volcanism with the
nearby volcanic structures (domes, stratovolcanoes) . During
the fieldtrip we will visit outcrops of pyroclastic deposits
associated to Plinian and sub-Plinian eruptions, and discuss
the vent source, dynamics and magnitude of these eruptive
events . In addition, we will observe the morphology of faults
transecting the geothermal field and some kinematic indicators
of fault movement.
This field trip begins on March 25 in the morning at
the International airport of Mexico City and ends at Hotel
Misión Juriquilla, Querétaro (meeting headquarter) no later
than 8 p .m . on March 27 . Breakfast of the first day and lodging
for the night of March 27 are not included in the fieldtrip
fee . The nights of March 25 and 26 is spent in Ciudad
Hidalgo . The driving distance from Mexico City to Ciudad
Hidalgo, Michoacán is ~375 km (233 miles) (driving time
~4 .5 hours), and from Ciudad Hidalgo to Juriquilla is 360 km
(236 miles) .
6. Ground Deformation Related to Anthropogenic
Activities in Urbanized Areas of the Mexico Basin.
Mariano Cerca (mcerca@geociencias .unam .mx) and Dora
Carreón, Centro de Geociencias, UNAM . Sun .–Mon ., 1–2
April . US$288 .
The modern Mexico megacity occupies almost all the
surface of the Valley of Mexico and is exposed to natural and
man-induced hazards affecting many aspects of urban development
. In Mexico City, groundwater has been over-exploited
for human consumption during the last fifty years, leading to
a dramatic decline of piezometric levels and to the associated
land and subsoil deformation . In this two-day fieldtrip we will
examine regional land subsidence and the vulnerability to
fracturing of the lacustrine soils of Mexico City .
7. Geology and Tectonics of the Southeastern Portion of
the Sierra de Guanajuato. José Jorge Aranda-Gómez (jjag@
geociencias .unam .mx); Pablo Dávila-Harris; Luis Vassallo .
Sun .–Tue ., 25–27 March . Cost: US$380 .
Sierra de Guanajuato is located in central México in a
region where several major geologic and tectonic provinces
join . Rocks exposed in the Mesozoic basal complex are keys
to understand the Guerrero terrane concept and the evolution
of the southern part of the North America craton during
the early Cretaceous . A Tertiary volcano-sedimentary succession,
unconformably resting on top of the basal complex,
includes one of the best documented continental red bed
deposits in central México, which was accumulated immediately
after the end of the Laramide orogeny and records
the earliest pulses of extension in the region . Resting atop
the red beds is a volcanic succession genetically related to
the Oligocene activity of Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic
province . World-class silver deposits that have been
exploited for nearly four centuries are hosted in the Tertiary
volcano-sedimentary succession, as well as in the rocks of the
basal complex . The rocks of the basal complex and regional
tectonic features are the focus of the first day of the field trip

and the last two days are devoted to the study of the nature
and probable source of the volcanic rocks, which immediately
preceded the ore deposition along two conspicuous sets of
normal faults .
8. Recent Volcanism and Hazards at the Eastern
Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Gerardo Carrasco-Núñez
(gerardoc@geociencias .unam .mx), Pablo Dávila-Harris,
Nancy Riggs, Michael Ort, Brian Zimmer, Chris Willcox and
Mike Branney . Sat .–Mon ., 31 March–2 Apr ., US$270 .
In this field trip we will examine examples of recent
(late Pleistocene and Holocene) volcanism in the eastern
Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, where a diversity of volcanism
and spectacular exposures can be seen . We will explore the
complex pyroclastic succession and caldera-rim effusions of
Los Humeros caldera volcano and geothermal field . We will
also examine a very interesting vitrophyric rhyolite dome
(Cerro Pizarro) and the structure and evolution of two contrasting
maar volcanoes: Atexcac (a classic basaltic maar)
and Cerro Pinto, a rhyolitic tuff ring-dome complex .
9. Geology and Geochronology of Tláloc, Telapón, and
Iztaccíhuatl Volcanoes, Sierra Nevada, Central Mexico. José
Luis Macías . Instituto de Geofísica, Unidad Morelia, UNAM,
macias@geofisica .unam .mx, José Luis Arce, Instituto de
Geología, UNAM; F . García, Instituto Politécnico Nacional,
Paul W . Layer, University of Alaska at Fairbanks, G . Reyes-
Agustín, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, F . López-Pizaña,
Instituto Politécnico Nacional, H . Rueda, Posgrado de
Ciencias de la Tierra, UNAM . Sun .–Wed ., 1–4 April .
US$ 477 .
The field trip will focus on late Quaternary geology, morphology
and geochronology of volcanoes of La Sierra Nevada
volcanic range . This range includes, from south to north, the
active Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl, Telapón, and Tláloc volcanoes
. The trip will highlight recent work, including mapping,
stratigraphy, and geochronological data . The trip will include
brief roadside stops, several short hikes to reach outcrops, and
strenuous long hikes at altitudes over 4,000 m . Topics covered
at fieldtrip stops are: 1) Evidence of late Pleistocene explosive
activity at Tláloc volcano accompanied by effusive activity,
2) Effusive build-up of Telapón volcano and surrounding
domes with episodes of dome destruction, 3) Major collapse
of Los Pies cone at the southern edge of the Iztaccíhuatl volcanic
complex and, 5) Popocatépetl´s latest explosive episode
which occurred in January 2001 and generated a 6-km long
scoria flow deposit .
This field trip begins at Hotel Misión, Juriquilla,
Querétaro and ends at the Mexico City International airport
. Participants on this field trip should eat breakfast (not
included in the fieldtrip fee) before departing . The fieldtrip
fee includes lunches for the four days, three breakfasts, and
dinner for the third night . During the first day, the driving
distance from Juriquilla, Querétaro to Tláloc volcano is about
280 km (~4 hours), and during the second day, the driving
distance from Popocatépetl volcano to the Mexico City
International airport is 75 km (~2 hours considering traffic) .
We plan to return to the Mexico City International airport
around 6 pm .
