The Grand Encampment was where the Mormons met after traveling across 

Iowa. Twelve days after they arrived at the Encampment, the U.S. Army was 

seeking volunteers. Five hundred men, known as the Mormon Battalion, began 

their trek to Southern California.

Bayliss Park & Veterans Plaza 

1st Ave. & Pearl St. • Bayliss Park has been a 

focal point of the downtown area since Samuel S. 

Bayliss donated the 2.15 acres in 1853. The park 

received a facelift and was rededicated in 

spring, 2007. Veterans Plaza, dedicated July 

4, 2003, was sculpted by famed artist John 

Lajba. The wall lists those who died or are 

missing in action from the Civil War through 

Desert Freedom. The fountain and surrounding 

area were designed by sculptor Brower Hatcher 

and landscaped by Dolores Silkworth. 

BAYLISS PARK 

Broadway Fountain 

Broadway & Pearl St. • The restored cast iron fountain was built 

in New York in 1890 and was once the centerpiece of Bayliss Park, 

the city’s oldest park. In May 2000, a dedication ceremony was 

held for the completely refurbished “Old Rusty”. An old-fashioned 

looking clock tower, lampposts, and flowerbeds have since joined 

the fountain area.

the wife of Gen. Grenville M. Dodge in the fall of 1916, 

before her death. Daniel Chester French, who created

Memorial in Washington, D.C., sculpted a likeness of 

the angel in Mrs.

The park is situated on a 17-acre lake, offers camping, boating, fishing, and numerous other activities year 

round. You can stay in one of three rustic cabins, pitch a tent and rough it or use one of the 65 campsites

available. The lake is stocked with bluegill, bass and catfish. Enjoy a hike along the trail or you can rent a 

canoe or paddleboat.

Botna Bend Park is a favorite for campers who enjoy a small town atmosphere. Enjoy hiking, fishing,

Located in the Loess Hills, Hitchcock has some of the largest remaining prairie remnants in Iowa and 

provides refuge for plants and animals found nowhere else in the state. The 1,268 acres are open every day 

of the year for hiking, camping, picnicking, bird watching, snow sledding. A 22-acre modern campground 

is equipped with 18 RV sites, shower house, two group tent sites, three cabins, and overlook deck. There is 

a fully furnished lodge for meetings, events or retreats. Attend seasonal recreation programs such as hikes, 

Monarch butterfly tagging, Night Sky Viewing, “HawkWatch” Programs, Mushroom Hunts and more.
