Bayliss Park & Veterans Plaza
1st Ave. & Pearl St. • Bayliss Park has been a
focal point of the downtown area since Samuel S.
Bayliss donated the 2.15 acres in 1853. The park
received a facelift and was rededicated in
spring, 2007. Veterans Plaza, dedicated July
4, 2003, was sculpted by famed artist John
Lajba. The wall lists those who died or are
missing in action from the Civil War through
Desert Freedom. The fountain and surrounding
area were designed by sculptor Brower Hatcher
and landscaped by Dolores Silkworth.
BAYLISS PARK
Broadway Fountain
Broadway & Pearl St. • The restored cast iron fountain was built
in New York in 1890 and was once the centerpiece of Bayliss Park,
the city’s oldest park. In May 2000, a dedication ceremony was
held for the completely refurbished “Old Rusty”. An old-fashioned
looking clock tower, lampposts, and flowerbeds have since joined
the fountain area.
Known locally as the “Black Angel,” this solid bronze
statue was inspired by three visions experienced by
the wife of Gen. Grenville M. Dodge in the fall of 1916,
before her death. Daniel Chester French, who created
the seated statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln
Eagles of Honor Project
Eagles of Honor are being sculpted by Neola
artist Russell Christensen. Christensen and many
towns across Pottawattamie County have a vision
of showing thankfulness and pride by creating a
Veteran’s Monument in every community.
In stunning bronze, each eagle is
unique. Each monument is a testament
that our county is strong, united, filled
with hard working people who appreciate
freedom and want to honor those who preserve
freedom for America. For more information, log onto
