October 2011
Dear Parents / Guardian,
2011/12 Carnegie ‘Blurb’ Book Club
The Kings’ English Department and Kings’ School Library are happy to announce the launch of
the 2012 Carnegie ‘Blurb’ Book Club to year 7 pupils. Meeting twice a half term, during a lunch
time, the club is an opportunity for pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 to meet new people, read some
great books, share ideas & opinions, run the Kings’ Carnegie Shadowing Website and generally
have fun.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. It
was established in 1936, in memory of the great Scottish-born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie
(1835-1919). His experience of using a library as a child led him to resolve that "if ever wealth
came to me that it should be used to establish free libraries." Carnegie set up more than 2800
libraries across the English speaking world and, by the time of his death, over half the library
authorities in Great Britain had Carnegie libraries.
While nominations for the award come out in November, the short list consisting of 6 books is
announced in April 2012, with the winner being announced in June 2012. We are currently
‘reading our way’ through the short list from last years award and hope to open our book club
up with recommendations for future books coming from the members.
The Carnegie Shadowing scheme encourages children to read a wide variety of genres of
fictional literature as well as opening up a wealth of opportunities to link with other local and
national schools who are also running the scheme. We have a dedicated page on the
Shadowing Website, which will allow us to challenge other schools, share ideas, hold voting
polls and run competitions amongst other things. This in itself gives ‘ownership’ of the ‘Blurb’
book club over to the pupils.
