The <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> C<strong>on</strong>temporary Art Australia (MCA) announces <str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>Focus</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>temporary <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>art</strong>, a group exhibiti<strong>on</strong> exploring innovative approaches<br />

to fibre and <strong>art</strong> in a c<strong>on</strong>temporary c<strong>on</strong>text.<br />

The presentati<strong>on</strong> brings together over 20 Aboriginal <strong>art</strong>ists from across Australia who work with expanded<br />

noti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> textile and craft-based traditi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The <strong>art</strong>ists and <strong>art</strong>ist groups presented in the exhibiti<strong>on</strong> include T<strong>on</strong>y Albert, Jean Baptiste Apuatimi,<br />

Boolarng Nangamai Aboriginal Art + Culture Studio, Frances Djulibing, Robyn Djunginy, Lola Greeno,<br />

Dale Harding, Thelma Juds<strong>on</strong>, Evelyn McGreen, Lipaki Marlaypa, Dhundunga Mununngurr, No<strong>on</strong>gar Doll<br />

Makers, Laurie Nilsen, Alis<strong>on</strong> Page, Regina Pilawuk Wils<strong>on</strong>, Jimmy Pike, Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, Tjanpi<br />

Desert Weavers, Vicki West and Yirrkala Printmakers.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g> presents a diverse range <strong>of</strong> works which engage with textile <strong>art</strong>istic traditi<strong>on</strong>s including<br />

sculpture, photography, painting and video. The exhibiti<strong>on</strong> is fore-grounded by the work <strong>of</strong> Yirrkala <strong>art</strong>ist<br />

Lipaki Marlaypa whose traditi<strong>on</strong>al hand-made woven <str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> acts as a c<strong>on</strong>ceptual st<strong>art</strong>ing point.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> works in <str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g>, such as those from Ramingining and Yirrkala will become p<strong>art</strong> <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MCA Collecti<strong>on</strong> and have a direct lineage back to the MCA’s history.<br />

One such work, and a pivotal <strong>on</strong>e, a Yukuwa (Yam <str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> vine) by Frances Djulibing is a reprise <strong>of</strong> an<br />

earlier piece that bridges the MCA past and present.<br />

MCA Director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE said: ‘<str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a multi-disciplinary c<strong>on</strong>temporary tribute<br />

to the rich textile traditi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Aboriginal <strong>art</strong>ists and takes as its st<strong>art</strong>ing point the way in which the MCA‘s<br />

collecting policy has always acknowledged such work as c<strong>on</strong>temporary <strong>art</strong>.’<br />

A key comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g> is people. People talking and people making. In Dale Harding’s work,<br />

ideas and objects grow out <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>versati<strong>on</strong>s with the <strong>art</strong>ist’s grandmother and mother, slowly evolving into<br />

<strong>art</strong>works that tell the hard truths <strong>of</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> history.<br />

The Tjanpi Desert Weavers’ tactile envir<strong>on</strong>ments are a culminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> discussi<strong>on</strong>, travel across vast<br />

distances and hands-<strong>on</strong> work between <strong>art</strong>ists and <strong>art</strong> workers in communities, cities and towns, n<strong>on</strong>-<br />

Indigenous and Indigenous, working together.<br />

The exhibiti<strong>on</strong>’s curator Glenn Barkley said: ‘<str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a scientific principle that posits a <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>of</strong><br />

everything. In the exhibiti<strong>on</strong> it implies expansi<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> across time and space, porous and openended<br />

embracing diverse approaches to the idea <strong>of</strong> ‘fibre’ or craft-based disciplines.’<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>string</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>theory</str<strong>on</strong>g>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>Focus</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>temporary <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>art</strong> is presented in the Level 3 Galleries.<br />
