Thank You, from Banner Health Ken Van Winkle, chairman of the Banner Health Foundation board of directors, will end his four-year term in December. The role of chairman of any nonprofit organization comes with much responsibility. Those who accept the challenge typically have a few short years in which to spearhead initiatives that have a lasting impact. For the past four years, Banner Health Foundation has been fortunate to call Ken Van Winkle chairman of its board of directors. Under his leadership, we have experienced great philanthropic rewards, reached many milestones and paved the way for future success. One of the things we’re most grateful for is Ken’s ability to focus on strategies for long-term success. His vision helped transform the Foundation from an organization that focused on fundraising through events to a more comprehensive fundraising institution. This shift required recruiting additional board members who share an understanding of philanthropy’s impact on our community. Ken has been instrumental in bringing experienced, engaged individuals to the table. With the right people in place, he turned his attention to helping build the Foundation’s first strategic plan. His unbiased assessment and recommendations led to a plan that ensures our areas of fundraising focus continue to align with the needs and priorities of Banner Health. Through it all, Ken has challenged us to be better, to remain flexible and to adapt to today’s economic environment. In doing that, he has helped us reach new heights. Among the most notable accomplishments of Ken’s chairmanship is the successful execution of Banner’s first capital campaign effort. The Through the Eyes of a Child Capital Campaign to build the new Cardon Children’s Medical Center on the Banner Desert campus raised more than $21 million, which included a generous contribution from the Van Winkle family. Knowing that one capital campaign can’t possibly meet all the health care needs of our community, Ken helped lay the groundwork for our next campaign. The campaign to help make the new Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center a reality is underway. Thanks to Ken’s connections and commitment to improving the health and well-being of our community, the campaign got a celebrity boost when Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald signed on as honorary chair. As we prepare to say farewell to Ken as chairman, we thank him for his leadership, his enthusiasm and his drive to improve the quality of health care in our community. His philanthropic vision and dedication to the Banner Health mission will continue as he will remain a member of the Banner Health Foundation board of directors. 4 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G
