At <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>,<br />

we are believers.<br />

We believe that everyone has<br />

the capacity to change their<br />

life no matter what terrible<br />

thing has happened to them or how<br />

desperate their circumstance.<br />

We believe, because we see it every day,<br />

that people do triumph over tragedy<br />

and trauma born out <strong>of</strong> violence, crisis<br />

and poverty.<br />

But we know change does not come<br />

easily. It comes as a result <strong>of</strong> the hard<br />

and courageous work that is done by<br />

the women, men, and children who<br />

walk through <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />

doors to confront what seem like<br />

insurmountable problems.<br />

Many years ago, a counselor at <strong>The</strong><br />

Women’s <strong>Center</strong> was asked how she<br />

managed to work every day, all day with<br />

sexually abused children – how she was<br />

able to hear and know the worst that<br />

could happen to a person. Her response<br />

was riveting then, and it is riveting still<br />

today. “I have to know the worst, but I<br />

am also privileged to know the best…<br />

that the resilience <strong>of</strong> the human spirit<br />

is a miracle. People can overcome<br />

anything with hope and a little help.”<br />

We are determined at <strong>The</strong> Women’s<br />

<strong>Center</strong> to inspire that hope, to provide<br />

that help, and to make possible happy,<br />

healthy futures.<br />

As you read this annual report, you will discover the depth and breadth <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />

Women’s <strong>Center</strong>’s programs and services. You will also meet Peter, Susan, Nancy,<br />

Audre and Donna. <strong>The</strong>y are representative <strong>of</strong> the thousands <strong>of</strong> people we serve<br />

every year, and they are the reason we believe. We hope they will make believers<br />

out <strong>of</strong> you as well.<br />

“Thank you from the bottom <strong>of</strong> my<br />

heart for making this dream possible.”<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong><br />

is filled with hope!”<br />

Peter’s dream was to provide a good, secure life<br />

for his children. After his wife died in Kenya,<br />

he remarried, and moved to the United States.<br />

Unfortunately the marriage failed and he and his boys<br />

were homeless – no money, no food, no job. Finding<br />

work making minimum wage cleaning airplanes, Peter<br />

moved into subsidized housing. But he needed more to<br />

support his family. He discovered <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />

job skills training program funded by United Way <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Tarrant</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s Earn Well Initiative. His world changed.<br />

Peter became a certified truck driver and was soon hired<br />

by Sky Chefs at DFW Airport. “Along with the training,<br />

they show you how to apply for a job and secure it. I owe<br />

my current job to this wonderful and well thought-out<br />

initiative at <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>.”<br />

Peter’s sons have excelled in Advanced Placement classes at<br />

school, and plan to attend college: George to study business/<br />

marketing, and Allan to become a rocket scientist.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> is invaluable, and touches in a real and<br />

most practical way the lives <strong>of</strong> the people in need to give them a<br />

second chance at life. I am a better father to my kids. Thank you<br />

from the bottom <strong>of</strong> my heart for making this dream possible.”<br />

Susan came from a life <strong>of</strong> privilege, and never felt<br />

she would need a place like <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>…<br />

until she and her four children escaped from an<br />

abusive husband and father. She was desperate to find a<br />

job, but worried about her prospects. Though she had<br />

worked hard volunteering, she had not been employed<br />

in over 20 years. While filling out forms at the district<br />

attorney’s <strong>of</strong>fice, someone told her <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong><br />

could help her find a job.<br />

“I felt I didn’t need to be here, because I had a college degree.<br />

But I found people in the same situation as me – some<br />

with higher degrees than mine, some with less education. I<br />

realized I was wrong and there was hope for us all!”<br />

Today Susan is Development Director at a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it, a job she<br />

loves. She tells her friends that <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> is a place<br />

to go, no matter your social status or economic background.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> is a very critical place for women in<br />

difficult situations. It is filled with hope. <strong>The</strong> help you get<br />

makes you strong.”<br />

Serves unemployed and under-employed women and men.<br />

• Women and men find the best possible job in the shortest possible time.<br />

• Low-income women and families overcome problems that keep them in crisis and unable<br />

to be successful at work.<br />

• Low skilled women and men receive training in order to become employed, advance on<br />

the job and improve wages.<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Record <strong>of</strong> Service<br />

1,087 People Served<br />

73% <strong>of</strong> Jobs NOW! clients became employed.<br />

Average wage at placement was $ 11.92 per hour.<br />

82% <strong>of</strong> clients who found jobs were still employed after one year.<br />

612 people completed training and learned skills to advance on the job.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first day I walked into <strong>The</strong> Women’s<br />

<strong>Center</strong>, I felt defeated, confused. I was<br />

shaking. I just did not know why I felt<br />

like this. <strong>The</strong>n I learned about trauma, and felt<br />

validated – I was not a cry-baby.”<br />

Nancy had never talked about the rape that<br />

happened in her own home by the man who<br />

sold her a car. She was in denial. She was<br />

physically sick for months afterwards and<br />

could not work. So her employer sent her to<br />

a counselor where she was diagnosed with<br />

PTSD. But she didn’t get better until she<br />

learned about <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

Nancy learned to overcome triggers that made<br />

her sick. “I gave away my living room furniture,<br />

where he had raped me, and repainted the walls…<br />

I kept singing the whole time “I’m gonna paint<br />

that man right out <strong>of</strong> my head.” And it worked.<br />

“My shame is gone.”<br />

Low self-esteem…distrust…self-doubt. This<br />

was Audre’s life. As a teen, her first<br />

boyfriend was sexually, physically and<br />

emotionally abusive. As a result, she became<br />

promiscuous and acted out with drugs, alcohol<br />

and more abusive men. Moving to North Texas<br />

to start over, Audre found <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong><br />

on the internet. As she read the web pages, she<br />

started to cry. This is what she needed. Audre<br />

began individual and group counseling, and<br />

started her transformation.<br />

“I was so ashamed for so long. But the minute I<br />

walked into <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> I found genuine<br />

compassion and acceptance. <strong>The</strong> group sessions<br />

made me feel so much better…I was not alone. It<br />

was a safe place – a ‘sisterhood’ where I could be<br />

honest, and that made me stronger.”<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> taught me to say YES – yes<br />

to loving myself, yes to having boundaries, and<br />

yes to having control. No one has power over me<br />

anymore. My shame is gone.”<br />

“I learned you have to love yourself to give yourself<br />

the time to heal. I did the work, but <strong>The</strong> Women’s<br />

<strong>Center</strong> gave me the tools to make myself better.”<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> is the most important call<br />

you can make.”<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Record <strong>of</strong> Service<br />

3,826 Children and Adults Served<br />

2,372 people called the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline.<br />

• Child and adult victims heal from rape, sexual abuse, and other violent and traumatizing crime.<br />

• Children and adults reduce their risk <strong>of</strong> victimization.<br />

• Police, courts and hospitals are supported and assisted in their work with victims.<br />

95 children and 398 adults and their 413 significant others were counseled at local hospital rape exam sites.<br />

483 abused and victimized children and their significant others received therapy.<br />

433 adult victims <strong>of</strong> sexual assault and other violent crime and their significant others received therapy.<br />

21 victims and their significant others were accompanied through criminal justice processes.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Legal Clinic saved my life!”<br />

Play it Safe! teaches tens<br />

<strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> children<br />

every year how to reduce<br />

their risk <strong>of</strong> abuse, and provides<br />

children the tools to tell someone<br />

about their abuse and get the<br />

help they need to heal. In <strong>2012</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong> received<br />

two grants to create new movies<br />

to accompany each grade level<br />

curriculum, Pre-K through 12th<br />

grade. To date, elementary grade<br />

movies have been completed<br />

and five additional movies for<br />

middle and high school will be<br />

completed in 2013.<br />

Pre K: Tick Tock<br />

1st Grade: Mae Shares A Secret<br />

<strong>The</strong> response from teachers has<br />

been overwhelmingly positive.<br />

One 4th grade teacher said: “<strong>The</strong><br />

video update increased the quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> an already excellent program,<br />

and I feel, made it very relevant.” 4th Grade: Chase Steps Up 5th Grade: Aiden’s Discovery<br />

Donna originally came to <strong>The</strong> Women’s<br />

<strong>Center</strong> after a suicide attempt.<br />

Depressed and self-mutilating, she was<br />

diagnosed with bipolar disorder and referred for<br />

counseling by John Peter Smith Hospital. While<br />

at <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>, Donna disclosed that<br />

her husband was abusive. So her counselor sent<br />

her to the <strong>Center</strong>’s free legal clinic. Upon hearing<br />

Donna’s story, the lawyer told her to leave that<br />

night – get out <strong>of</strong> the house now. She did. “I know<br />

the Legal Clinic saved my life.”<br />

Today Donna is working on her bachelor’s degree<br />

– even becoming a member <strong>of</strong> the National<br />

Honor Society. She is self-sufficient, confident<br />

and happy.<br />

“I never thought I would be more than mentally<br />

ill. From the time I walked through the door <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />

Women’s <strong>Center</strong>, I was greeted with care from every<br />

single person. I can trust people again.”<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Record <strong>of</strong> Service<br />

88,023 Children and Adults Served<br />

83,214 children and adolescents participated in child abuse and sexual assault prevention programs. As<br />

a result, 181 children disclosed their current or past abuse in <strong>2012</strong> to a Women’s <strong>Center</strong> trainer (does not<br />

include children who may have disclosed to another trusted adult).<br />

3,442 adults received sexual assault prevention training.<br />

1,339 pr<strong>of</strong>essionals were trained in sexual assault, primary prevention and victim assistance issues.<br />

3,050 people called the Helpline for crisis counseling and problem<br />

solving assistance.<br />

152 people received individual and/or group therapy.<br />

318 homeless children and their 176 parents living in shelters<br />

received support services.<br />

“I get so much more in return.”<br />

One night Christi Cameron was<br />

called to the hospital for a rape<br />

survivor who was elderly and<br />

deaf. Christi was the only support person<br />

present with the survivor. She held her<br />

hand during the woman’s examination,<br />

getting her juice and anything else to give<br />

some comfort. Afterward, when the<br />

woman was being taken back to the facility<br />

where she lived, she signed to Christi “I<br />

love you.” Recounting this story with a<br />

quavering voice, Christi says THIS is why<br />

she volunteers in Rape Crisis and Victim<br />

Services. For those people who have no<br />

one…for people who don’t know what to<br />

expect…for survivors who are scared.<br />

“I get so much more in return than I can<br />

ever give back. When you leave the hospital<br />

or get <strong>of</strong>f the phone with a survivor, you<br />

know you’ve helped someone.”<br />

More than volunteering, Christi is an<br />

outspoken advocate for rape survivors,<br />

talking about her own horrifying<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> sexual assault. She also<br />

volunteers elsewhere at <strong>The</strong> Women’s<br />

<strong>Center</strong> – working on the Victory Over<br />

Violence Walk/Run committee and<br />

wrapping Christmas presents for clients.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> her passion and commitment<br />

to helping survivors, we are proud to<br />

honor Christi Cameron as <strong>2012</strong> Volunteer<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Significant Facts<br />

In <strong>2012</strong>, 502 volunteers provided 12,566 hours <strong>of</strong> volunteer work.<br />

More than 75 organizations, businesses, churches and school groups participated in community<br />

service projects with <strong>The</strong> Women’s <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

Over 85% <strong>of</strong> volunteer hours were direct service to clients.<br />

<strong>The</strong> value <strong>of</strong> volunteer service for <strong>2012</strong> was $268,205.<br />
