Introduction
Dear Student
It is with great pleasure that the staff and students of the BA (Hons) Commercial
Photography course look forward to welcoming you to the Arts University
Bournemouth in September.
The course will commence with an induction period of one week. During this time
you will have the opportunity to learn about your course, the environment at the
University and get to know your new colleagues and the Course Team. You will also
get the opportunity to discover Bournemouth and the surrounding area.
On the first day you will need to bring a pen, note pad and an academic diary for
2013/14 (electronic is fine if this is what you use). On the Friday of the first week
you will also need to bring the portfolio you presented at interview.
We want to offer you the best support while you are with us. If you have a disability
or additional needs, please discuss any matter confidentially with Barry Gilbert, our
Senior Disability Officer, by emailing wellbeing@aub.ac.uk or by calling 01202
363291. Student mentors will be around in the first week to offer support.

SUMMER PROJECT
Year 1 Summer Research Assignment 2014
During the induction week we will conduct portfolio ‘show and tell sessions’, so
make sure that you come prepared to apply the criteria below to one of the images
from your interview portfolio.
1. Why did you make the picture
2. What inspired you
3. Which photographers inspired you or may have made similar work
4. What did you want the image to communicate
5. Where might you see the work published or shown
6. How do you want your work to develop
Your research will form the basis of a number of the sessions in the early weeks of
the course including seminar debates and induction discussions. Ultimately you will
be able to use this preliminary research to feed into your written and practical work
during the 1st term.
Include images of your work and that of others as visual reference/illustration, to
support your text. The research should be seen as the start of your ‘sketchbook (A4
research and development file) for the coming term.

COURSE TRIP
During the third week of February 2015 (17-21) we are running an educational visit
to New York. On previous visits we have organised a varied and interesting itinerary
for the trip. This has included talks from prestigious photographers, agents and
agencies. We have worked collaboratively with Parsons School of Design, sharing
projects and lessons. During previous years, the students worked on a ‘live’ fashion
brief collaborating with Criminal Clothing and also a ‘live’ brief with New York
based magazine Re:Source. The course also visits all the major galleries and
museums during the visit. Previous students have found the experience to be a
rewarding one that has not only broadened their awareness of photographic
practice, but has also led to further opportunities in New York, including
internships and work experience.
The full cost of the trip will be approximately £799 (not including food and
spending money). This includes transfers, flights, shared rooms for 4/5 nights and
basic insurance. You will be expected to pay a deposit for the trip during the first
two weeks of October.

Enrolment is completed by an ID check during your first week at AUB. It is essential
that you bring the following ID with you to complete this process:

If you cannot bring any of the above forms of ID we will accept a photo ID plus one
