MORE COFFEE
LESS LYCRA

MORE COFFEE LESS LYCRA
Are you a little put off by the thought of climbing big hills on a bike Doing
100kms on a Saturday morning is really just not your thing. Or perhaps you
don’t like all that sweat in the other bike club! It may even be the thought of
tight body fitting lycra that’s stopping you from heading out on the bike. Well
if that’s your problem then maybe there’s a bike club just for you! I recently
caught up with Rod Wearn to find out what More Coffee Less Lycra is all
about.
When did the club start Rod ‘The group started in late 2009. At the time
to be fair, Mud, Sweat and Gears was a very male dominated club. The
group came out of a response from our wives. They were keen to do some
exercise. So the group was very much less gender exclusive and having a
lower fitness standard it met all of our needs.’
When do you ride ‘We ride on Sunday afternoons after church. It’s on
most weekends except in the rain.’ What’s the dress code ‘Definitely no
lycra, unless it’s hidden.’ What’s the game plan ‘We usually meet for
lunch these days. We head off from Seacliff and then travel down to Henley
Beach and return. It’s a 20km ride, but it’s all flat.’ And the Coffee Yes the
coffee is most important! We usually stop off for a 1hr coffee break and its
good coffee!
Exercise and fellowship is very important to the group. There is good talking
time at the café. It’s a chance to get to know each other much better.
It’s easy going and there’s no pressure.’ It’s a very important group in the
church as it gives us great balance.
‘The group ranges in size from 12 to 3 or 4. All are
welcome to join the group.’ If you are interested
please have a chat to Sam and Sue Thomson or
Rod Wearn.

EDITORIAL:
What is core work Core work can be very
simple but it can also be very complex.
There are lots of ways in which we can develop
and strengthen the core. We may do
this through sit ups, pilates, physiotherapy exercises, light weights and general exercise such as
bike riding and swimming. There are many exercises which are very effective for core development.
Why should we do core work Core work helps body alignment. It increases power from the
pelvis and the trunk, which in turn helps us to move more effectively. It reduces rocking and side
to side movement in all sports. It improves technique, flexibility and reduces the risk of injury.
Core work reduces back pain.
What you need to do before starting core work It is important to see a Physiotherapist before
commencing core work to ensure that your work out is appropriate for your physical needs
and demands. By doing this you may isolate and target specific muscle groups. You also may
be able to learn how to best deal with any existing injuries or pain. After experiencing back pain
you may need training and conditioning to re-fire muscle groups.
A good example of core exercise is leg raises! Lying
face down with your stomach and hips aligned with the
floor lift one leg and point your toes. Hold this position for
5 - 10 seconds. Then slowly lower and repeat with other
leg. Repeat 5 times.
Having Jesus Christ at the core of our life is
really important. Christ lives in us. (Galatians
2:20) Placing Jesus at the center of our life
gives us power and strength to do all things
through him. God is at work in us. (Philippians
2: 13) Jesus is the rock and the cornerstone
of our church. Our foundation is built upon
Christ at our core. Jesus invites us to build
upon his Kingdom. He is our rock. He is our
strength; he protects us from injury and from
our enemy. With Jesus at our core we have
power and strength. Praise God for Christ at
the centre of our lives!
CORE WORK

MEGA
SWIMMERS
Linda Chaplin is one of our very talented swimmers at Church. I caught up with her and discussed
what the Swim Club has been up to this year. How often do you train ‘I usually train
once a week, but in the build up to main events I train twice a week.’ The group trains at the
Unley Swimming Pool on Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and Friday mornings. During
the winter months the team trains at the Westminster pool or the new Marion aquatic centre.
What has the club done this year ‘In January and February we had 2 events which we participated
in. On Australia day we entered the “Jetty to Jetty” swim and we also did an event
called the “ Mega Swim.” The Jetty to Jetty is on Australia day. The swim is from Henley Beach
to Grange. This year’s swim was particularly difficult. It was a lot harder than normal. We were
against the current and there was a little bit of chop. At times I felt as if I was moving backwards
as I swam across the top of the waves.’ Linda shared that this year’s swim took her an extra 10
minutes. ‘Usually I can finish in around 40 minutes, but this year I took 50 minutes. We had 10
members from the club do the swim on the day.’ The group had some amazing results. Brandon
Chaplin came 3 rd in his age group, Linda Chaplin came 6 th in her age group and Oliver Kerr also
placed well. The results are a testimony to the strong training efforts by the club members.
‘Members receive a trophy for completing the event 10 years in a row, so that is something for
us to aim for’, said Linda, ‘Brandon is almost there!’
‘The Church Swim Club was asked to join the Unley team in the Mega Swim. The Mega Swim
was a 24hr endurance race designed to raise money for MS. Each team had one lane and only
one member could swim at a time. As part of the competition the church group swam for 4 hrs.
In this time we swam 15kms. Each member would swim 500 meters and then we would swap
over with a new team member. We would rotate like a relay. Our team came second. We were
beaten by a strong swim club, but only by 1500 meters in the end.’
If you are interested in joining the Swim Club please contact Katrina Beck or have a chat
with Linda Chaplin. All members are very welcome.
NICHOLAS THE NEW KING
OF THE MOUNTAIN
It was a glorious day for the April 2011 King of the Mountain event. You may remember last
years race was held in pouring rain and very heavy track conditions. This years race was the
complete opposite. The air was cool, there was no breeze and the sun was still warm. The temperature
was perfect and the track had hardened up again after some recent rain. Despite all
these factors for fast times the course had been lengthened by a good 150 meters this year.
Morris Allan, key official, prayed to God and thanked him for the gift of such a beautiful day with
the whole Mud, Sweat and Gears Team. It was a special moment as we all connected with God
and gathered together before the days racing was under way.
Again it was the youngsters that took the glory on the mountain. Nicholas Blieschke was far too
quick for anyone else this year. He won the event by a clear margin! Congratulations Nic on an
outstanding win and huge personal best! Those young guns are getting faster and faster every
year, definitely something to watch out for in the future!
Check out the full race results on page 6.
