MUD, SWEAT & GEARS
TEARS & JOY
BY MATT BAKER
In 2012 Mud, Sweat and Gears mourns the loss of John Williams. John was a popular and well
liked member of the cycling club. He had successfully competed in two King of the Mountain
events (KOM). We remember John with fond memories; we were blessed to share rides, stories
and coffee with him.
KOM 9 was held on March the 12 th this year. Amazingly God gave us yet another wet and
muddy day. Officials were certainly forced to run the event in trying circumstances. Despite the
rain there was a strong field present, with several athletes in the form of their life. In the end,
times were lost due to mud getting in the recording devices. However line honors were clear.
Kyan Chaplin, a previous KOM champion, finished in third place and James Beck, another
young gun, took out second place. However, despite the talented youth and the pressure they
put on the whole field it was the old boys who celebrated yet another win. Adrian Otte took out
the blue ribbon event.
In between races this year it all went down! Whilst training in the Adelaide Hills I was hit by a car.
I managed to pull over at the last minute to avoid a more serious crash. In the end I escaped
with shock and bruising to my right arm. The car raced off dangerously, and I was unable to get
the number plate. At least I was able to report the hit and run to the police.
Also this year, three cyclists managed to have three separate accidents on their way down to
McLaren Vale. Three out of three found their way to hospital! Praise God that Peter Johnson,
Mary Marston and Adrian Otte all survived and made it out of hospital to tell the story!
You could not have had a bigger build up to KOM 10. Form was good for a lot of riders. As usual
predicting a winner was almost impossible. Do you back the youth, who have proved they can
win, or do you look to the old boys for yet another champion. I don’t think anyone was looking to
the faster back runners, but then stranger things have happened in KOM history. In race 8, Brandon
Chaplin managed to get second place, and in race 6, Scott Inveldt also grabbed second
place. Equally as impressive however was Gavin Blieschke’s effort. He also achieved second
place in race 1. So although these talented riders had not yet grabbed a win, I guess you could
never count them out.

Congratulations Sigrid
Lundborg (3rd Place)

In the end it was the Chaplin’s again who dominated race 10, however this time it was young
Jack who won the event. He finished well above the majority of the competition. Jack commented,
’at the end of the race I still had lots of energy.’ Perhaps this is a warning sign to the
rest of the field for the future! Interestingly Jack was assisted by Linda Chaplin who rode as a
domestique for Jack to show him the way. Could this be the future of Mud, Sweat and Gears
Will more team players come into the race Well done Linda on a great team ride! Bailey Wells
finished in second place and Sigrid Lundborg came in third place. Sigrid’s performance is the
highest finish ever recorded by a female in Mud, Sweat and Gears history. Well done Sigrid!
The club is now in heavy training for the Tour Down Under community ride. Riders are looking to
challenge themselves and enjoy a long ride with close friends. You can choose from several
different distances. There is a 127km ride, a 92km ride, a 46.5km ride and a 20km ride. So
there’s something for everyone who enjoys riding. If you like cycling, then join Mud, Sweat and
Gears and thousands of others on a day that you will never forget!
I pray to God that everyone will enjoy the ride this year and that riders will keep safe in both their
training adventures and travels. I hope you also enjoy a big week of racing in Adelaide! The real
super heroes will be in town, although God thinks you’re a super hero too!
If you are interested in riding with us, please check out the BHBC website and follow the Mud,
Sweat and Gears link. We would love to have you on our Saturday morning rides. There is a
7:30am ride to Mount Lofty suited for advanced and experienced riders and there is a 9:00am
ride within the Belair National Park that allows all members to participate and enjoy. Once a
month we ride to McLaren Vale, everyone is welcome. Mud, Sweat and Gears hopes to catch
you on a ride soon!

EDITORIAL:
PROTEIN, CARBS AND SUGARS
When planning a long training session or in preparation to do an event, it is important to eat Protein,
Carbs and Sugars. This will give you a significant performance boast. Nutrition is a very
powerful way of achieving your full potential as an athlete.
What to do before the event Naturally the human body stores glycogen in our muscles. When
released this provides us with muscle energy and human movement. We can increase our performance
by eating a good diet. It is important that you start planning at least one day before the
event. A good start is fish for tea; however this is really not enough. Try to include sugars in
your snacks all day. Bread or fish or rice are on your menu. But don’t stop there! Try adding
sports drinks, honey, jam, cordial and bananas. Boosting sugar levels also really helps your
body to store higher amounts of energy. Your daily energy intake will be a lot higher than normal.
So this is not an everyday diet plan, but it really works for your special event to provide you with
the energy that you require to do your best.
Just as we need energy for human
movement, we also require energy to
carry out what Jesus has called us to
do. Encouragement is just one way
we can boost others up. Practice
giving encouragement to a friend or
someone you meet. Words from the
Holy Spirit can really lift others up
and help them through the day.
Through encouragement we may
have a spirit of unity. (Rom 15:5)
Jesus’ grace gives us eternal encouragement.
(2Th 2:16) Try to encourage
your family, friends and those
you meet in order to help people and
show Christ’s love to others.
Through the encouragement of the
scriptures we may have hope. (Ro
15:4)
FISHING
ADVENTURE
WITH DAVID STOCK
Recently I caught up with David Stock and we discussed fishing. ‘How long have you been into
fishing’, I asked David shared with me that he had been fishing for years and years. However
his first memories of an actual fishing group within the Church date back to a Moonta Church
Camp. From here on, a fishing group slowly developed. David learned that Ray Harris and Ron
Coleman also loved fishing adventures. These men got together to start an informal Blackwood
Hills Baptist fishing group.
David would ring them up and
away they would go. Most times
the fishing group would travel down
to Cape Jervis or to Second Valley.
Traffic was simply too slow to travel
north on a quick fishing journey.
WHAT A CATCH !!!
David expressed with me that they
had caught the bag limit before.
‘Mostly we catch Tommy ruffs,’
commented David. However there
are times when he admitted they
walked away with nothing. If there
was something around then most
times the group would be onto it.

‘COME, FOLLOW ME,’ JESUS
SAID, ‘AND I WILL MAKE YOU
FISHERS OF MEN.’
On the way down to the fishing adventure David shared with me that together they solved the
problems of the world. After fishing they would usually scale the fish down and then share tea
together. Coming home the group would chat away or sometimes they would simply listen to the
radio.
The group advertises once a year in the Church bulletin. Youth and friends have been along
from time to time. However if you’re interested in a fishing adventure give your number to David
Stock and he will contact you.
It is encouraging to hear about Christian
fellowship within the Church. Let us continually
encourage others and share the Word of
God with one another.
‘As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting
a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I
will make you fishers of men. At once they
left their nets and followed him.’ (Mark 1:16
– 18)
I pray to God that you also may continue to
follow Jesus in your daily adventures.
