LIEBHERR GEAR-CUTTING MACHINES<br />

NEW FEATURES FOR THE GEAR HOBBING FUNCTION IMPROVE<br />

PROCESS MONITORING AND OPTIMIZE THE TOOL SERVICE LIFE<br />

In c<strong>on</strong>trast to processes where absolute inform<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> such as "tool<br />

breakage" or "missing tool" is sufficient, <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> requires<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinuous m<strong>on</strong>itoring, which reliably ensures to keep the wear of the tool<br />

strictly within the specified tolerances. For optimizing such <strong>hobbing</strong><br />

processes, ARTIS has developed a new fe<strong>at</strong>ure for the m<strong>on</strong>itoring functi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong>. It is already successfully in oper<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <strong>at</strong> ZF in Saarbrücken<br />

in the producti<strong>on</strong> of high-quality autom<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>gear</strong>boxes. All ARTIS products<br />

are exclusively marketed by the <strong>MARPOSS</strong> Group of which it is a member<br />

company.<br />

In their works <strong>at</strong> Saarbrücken, ZF Friedrichshafen AG develops<br />

and manufactures 6- and 8-speed autom<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>gear</strong>boxes for<br />

medium and upper class cars. The 8-speed autom<strong>at</strong>ic <strong>gear</strong>box<br />

8HP c<strong>on</strong>sists of four sets of planetary <strong>gear</strong>s and five shift<br />

elements with a total of 20 to 25 <strong>gear</strong>wheels. With an annual<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> of 1.9 milli<strong>on</strong> <strong>gear</strong>boxes in 2012, the <strong>gear</strong> cutting<br />

machines are in c<strong>on</strong>tinuous oper<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> – and reliable processes<br />

are required.<br />

Reliable <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> processes with ARTIS<br />

The ARTIS process m<strong>on</strong>itoring utilizes the measured torque of<br />

the milling spindle to obtain inform<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> about the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the tool. The torque curve is "taught" <strong>on</strong>ce and compared with<br />

the actual machining process. To m<strong>on</strong>itor breakage, the signal<br />

intensity is used. The product from power and time is visualized<br />

as area below the signal curve, from which the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

tool can be determined. The functi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> fully<br />

autom<strong>at</strong>ically records the wear without interventi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

machine oper<strong>at</strong>or "in full secti<strong>on</strong>" or in the range of the largest<br />

cutting forces respectively. Gear <strong>hobbing</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e of several<br />

methods th<strong>at</strong> can be selected for the process m<strong>on</strong>itoring system<br />

CTM from ARTIS. It has been especially c<strong>on</strong>ceived for the<br />

requirements and characteristics of <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> and has been<br />

in use worldwide since 2009.<br />

The new ZF-autom<strong>at</strong>ic transmissi<strong>on</strong><br />

gener<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> is based <strong>on</strong> a completely new<br />

transmissi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cept with four planetary<br />

<strong>gear</strong> sets and five shift elements.<br />

Optimiz<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> with ARTIS<br />

Savings in the cost of tools can add up to five-figure sums<br />

within a few m<strong>on</strong>ths. ARTIS c<strong>on</strong>tinually works <strong>on</strong> new<br />

developments th<strong>at</strong>, am<strong>on</strong>gst other benefits, could reduce the<br />

machining times in <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> in rel<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> to the load.<br />

Liebherr-Verzahntechnik<br />

The Liebherr <strong>gear</strong>-cutting machines, Type LC, bel<strong>on</strong>g to the<br />

machine park for producing <strong>gear</strong>boxes <strong>at</strong> ZF in Saarbrücken. In<br />

additi<strong>on</strong> to the producti<strong>on</strong> machines for the automobile industry,<br />

the portfolio of Liebherr-Verzahntechnik also includes universal<br />

machines for large workpieces and special machines for fine<br />

machining. For the process m<strong>on</strong>itoring <strong>on</strong> milling machines, the<br />

machine manufacturer already has already used ARTIS<br />

systems for many years. The <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> functi<strong>on</strong> is of<br />

particular interest for machine types<br />

which machine workpieces with a diameter of up to 500 mm. Dr.<br />

Oliver Winkel is head of the area of applic<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> technology /<br />

technology development for <strong>gear</strong> milling <strong>at</strong> Liebherr-<br />

Verzahntechnik. His c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>: "The CTM system from ARTIS<br />

assists our customers to ensure the daily number of units of<br />

<strong>gear</strong>wheels required and, simultaneously, protects the valuable<br />

milling tools and machines. A breakage not <strong>on</strong>ly means<br />

unplanned tool costs and rejects, but also downtimes in the<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> and, in the worst case, costly damage to the <strong>gear</strong><br />

<strong>hobbing</strong> machines. Briefly, the customer can reliably deploy the<br />

capabilities of the machine and tool."<br />

At Liebherr-Verzahntechnik, the m<strong>on</strong>itoring system CTM V5 is<br />

utilized, signal transmissi<strong>on</strong> is carried out without a sensor, via<br />

digital performance d<strong>at</strong>a (DTA, Digital Torque Adapter) th<strong>at</strong> is<br />

directly exported from the c<strong>on</strong>troller via a Profibus c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Up to the present, the new fe<strong>at</strong>ures for <strong>gear</strong> <strong>hobbing</strong> have been<br />

successfully utilized <strong>on</strong> Liebherr milling machines with Siemens<br />

840D SL c<strong>on</strong>trollers. The system also functi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> older<br />

machines with Siemens 840D PL or other c<strong>on</strong>trollers. There is<br />

also an opti<strong>on</strong> for analog measurement of the effective power.<br />
