Entrance<br />
The members <strong>of</strong> Convocation in<br />
their academic robes march in<br />
procession into the ceremony in<br />
the following order: Graduands<br />
in the order in which their<br />
degrees are to be conferred;<br />
Faculty; Board <strong>of</strong> Governors;<br />
Senate; Guests <strong>of</strong> Honour; The<br />
President; The Chancellor;<br />
The Lieutenant Governor. When<br />
the members <strong>of</strong> Convocation reach<br />
their places they remain standing<br />
during the Vice-Regal Salute,<br />
the singing <strong>of</strong> O Canada and the<br />
Invocation.<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> the Ceremony<br />
The first business is the Conferring<br />
<strong>of</strong> Honorary Degrees, followed by<br />
Convocation Address, President’s<br />
Statement to the Graduands,<br />
the Conferring <strong>of</strong> Degrees and<br />
the Presentation <strong>of</strong> Awards. The<br />
meeting is closed by the Chancellor<br />
rising and asking the audience to<br />
join in the singing <strong>of</strong> God Save the<br />
Queen and leading the procession<br />
in the reverse order out <strong>of</strong> the hall.<br />
Degree Ceremony<br />
the petition<br />
The <strong>University</strong> Secretary on behalf<br />
<strong>of</strong> all the Candidates, addresses<br />
the Chancellor and Senate in these<br />
words:<br />
“Eminent Chancellor, President, I<br />
present to you the petition that the<br />
candidates to be named, having<br />
fulfilled all the requirements <strong>of</strong> the<br />
statutes, may be admitted to the<br />
degrees and certificates to which<br />
they are entitled”.<br />

The Chancellor then addresses the<br />
candidates in these words:<br />
“By virtue <strong>of</strong> the authority vested<br />
in me by the Legislature <strong>of</strong> this<br />
Province, and with the consent <strong>of</strong><br />
the Council <strong>of</strong> this <strong>University</strong>, I<br />
consent to admit you to the degrees<br />
and certificates to which you are<br />
entitled and to invest you with all<br />
the powers, rights and privileges<br />
pertaining thereto.”<br />
the PRESENTATION<br />
The Dean <strong>of</strong> the Faculty, or<br />
designate, followed by the<br />
candidates <strong>of</strong> that Faculty,<br />
“Eminent Chancellor, on behalf <strong>of</strong><br />
the Faculty <strong>of</strong> ______, I present to<br />
you these Scholars and ask that you<br />
will confer on them the degree <strong>of</strong><br />
______ .”<br />
As the Dean speaks the candidate’s<br />
name in full, the candidate moves<br />
forward in front <strong>of</strong> the Chancellor.<br />
Then the Chancellor says, “I admit<br />
you” and the <strong>University</strong> Secretary or<br />
the Registrar places the hood over<br />
the candidate’s head. Hereupon the<br />
candidate passes to the Chancellor’s<br />
right, is greeted by the President,<br />
and receives the degree parchment.<br />
Degrees in Absentia<br />
In such cases, the <strong>University</strong><br />
Secretary says:<br />
“Eminent Chancellor, in the name <strong>of</strong><br />
the Faculties, I ask you to grant the<br />
degrees and certificates, in absentia,<br />
to those students whose names<br />
appear in the printed program and<br />
who were not able to be present<br />
today.”<br />
The Chancellor replies:<br />
approaches the Chancellor from “At the request <strong>of</strong> the Faculties<br />
The ceremony comprises the Petition, the left and presents the candidates I authorize these degrees and<br />
the Admission, and the Presentation.<br />
