About Old Dominion University
At Old Dominion University we understand that there’s more to education than
books and classrooms alone can provide.
We are a versatile university, committed to our students, their education, personal
development, and overall success.
Because of our location, Old Dominion can offer programs that
other universities can’t. The city of Norfolk is situated on
the Chesapeake Bay and within a short drive to
Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks of North
Carolina; students use the local water
as their oceanography classroom.
Specialized engineering courses
that deal with bay dredging and
bridge building are also offered.
Our campus is thirty miles from
the NASA/Langley Research
Center, and many students
learn from shared faculty, facilities,
and research technology.
The Hampton Roads area is home
to internationally recognized business
and industry giants, setting the
stage for courses in business and international
relations. Students enjoy a lively cultural
community with theater, music and museums.
Welcome Letter
Why Monarchs
When Jim Jarrett arrived on the campus of Old Dominion University in the fall of 1967
as a Health and Physical Education professor, he had little idea that his tenure would
be counted in decades. During that time span, he has led the program from a well
respected NCAA Division II member to a nationally respected Division I power that has
captured 25 national championships.
Jarrett began his 36th year as athletic director in 2006, taking over the reigns in 1970
when Bud Metheny stepped down from that position. As one of the youngest
athletic directors in the nation at that time, Jarrett quickly began
to make a name for himself and ODU. He committed early on to
a philosophy of “selective excellence,” whereby the department
“selected” its competitive sports and committed
itself financially, academically and competitively to the
sports it felt the University could best excel.
In 1974, Jarrett became the first athletic director
in the state of Virginia to award grant-in-aids to
women student-athletes. It was a bold move
at the time for a young athletic director and
equally young University, but one that paid
great dividends. Just five years later, in
1979, the Lady Monarchs won the first of three
national championships in women’s basketball,
and led the nation in attendance.
Under his leadership, the department’s athletic
venues have tripled and are considered
state of the art facilities. They include the
construction of the Bud Metheny Baseball
Complex, the Sailing Center, the Athletic
Administration Building and the 8,500 seat
Constant Convocation Center. Currrently, Jarrett
is overseeing construction of the ODU Soccer
Building, an indoor tennis facility and renovations to
the Athletic Administration Building, which include a
new weight room, training room and academic advising
area.
For all his efforts, Jarrett’s has been honored many times by national
and local groups. Most recently, Jarrett was given Lifetime Achievement
awards from NACDA and VaSID. In 2003, he was named the Southeast Regional
Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA. Other awards he’s received include the
Collegiate Director’s Award from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and
the Norfolk Sports Club Man of the Year. He served as a member of the NCAA Women’s
Basketball Committee and is a past president of the Colonial Athletic Association and
the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
Many people have wondered how the
Old Dominion University athletic teams
came to be officially knows as the
Monarchs.
For many years, the athletic teams of the
Norfolk division of the College of William
& Mary (as Old Dominion was formerly
called) were known as the Braves. This
was a derivation of the William & Mary
nickname of Indians. As Old Dominion
achieved its own four-year status and
saw its enrollment surpass that of its
Williamsburg neighbor, it was no longer
suitable or acceptable to have its teams
called the Braves.
The name Monarchs evokes much of
the early history of the Commonwealth
of Virginia and of Old Dominion’s mother
institution, the College of William &
Mary. The nickname “Old Dominion”
was first coined to the Virginia colony
by King Charles II after Virginia’s loyalty
to the crown during the English Civil
War. Furthermore, William III and Mary
II, whose patronage helped found the
College of William & Mary in Virginia in
1963, ruled England at the invitation of
Parliament as “joint monarchs.”
The Monarch used by Old Dominion
has a royal crown on a lion’s head, representing
an historic past and a strong
future.
An avid golfer and tennis player, Jarrett and his wife Sugie reside in Norfolk.

of 2004. Sugie has received numerous tennis
awards for her energetic commitment to
Hampton Roads tennis. Her father, Tom Scott,
was the first athletic director of Old Dominion
University and her husband Dr. James Jarrett
is the current athletic director. The “Sugie”
endowment was created in four days when
over 100 of her friends contributed over $30,000
to honor Sugie. The endowment was presented
to her as part of tennis appreciation night at Old
Dominion University in 2001.
Public Schools, and helped establish the Donna Doyle Scholarship
in 1975 with the creation of the Donna Doyle Scholarship basketball
game. Proceeds from the Lady Monarch game were
earmarked for women’s athletic scholarships. Following
coach, Scott’s 1932 team finished with a
9-1 record and competed against the University
of Miami in the Orange Bowl. As an outstanding
athlete in his own right, Scott was inducted posthumously
into the VMI Hall of Fame (his alma mater), the
Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Old Dominion Sports
Hall of Fame. The scholarship is currently earmarked for an
“Enhancing the opportunity for excellence.”
RECRUITMENT GOAL
The Old Dominion tennis program strives to recruit talented student-athletes
with athletic ability that can compete for conference championships and
is judged on how well the student-athletes do in college and after college. In
addition to representing Old Dominion University, the tennis program is also
representing the Hampton Roads area. The tennis program would like to thank
the many people who have supported the tennis program over the years
and for their continued support.
COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
The Old Dominion tennis program has participated in
various tennis clinics throughout the Hampton Roads
community and other community service projects.
The student-athlete in the tennis program realizes
program has hosted USTA $10,000 Women’s Satellites, USTA Adult
League Championships, USTA CTC Junior Rally, various USTA junior
tournaments, and Nick Bollettieri Summer Tennis Academy.
SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISING
Scholarships for the men and women’s tennis team are funded from the university,
annual contributions, scholarship events and interest off of endowments
given to the intercollegiate foundation for tennis scholarships. The NCAA allows tennis
to utilize 4.5 to men scholarships and 8 scholarships for women’s tennis. To fully fund
the tennis scholarships at Old Dominion for one year would cost approximately $275,000.

ANNUAL FUND
Annual cash gifts are essential for the present success of the program. Annual cash gifts
allow the tennis program to offer scholarships to current recruits.
ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
Endowments provide long-term success for the tennis program. The approximate 5%
interest off of the endowment provides funds for scholarships and a portion of the interest
is put back into the endowment allowing it to grow with inflationary cost. An endowment
can be named after an individual and can be established with a $25,000 contribution.
Various recognition is offered for endowments depending upon the level. The tennis
program currently has endowments in the name of Sugie Jarrett, Robert Furniss, Tom
Scott, and Maurice Steingold. Contribution can be made to the existing endowments,
the general endowment, or create a new endowment. The tennis program has
approximately $500,000 in endowed scholarships.
SCHOLARSHIP EVENTS
The tennis program’s flagship Old Dominion Scholarship Tennis Tournament provides the
opportunity for the tennis program to associate with the tennis community and assists
in providing annual money for scholarship. In addition to participation, the tournament
provides sponsorship opportunities.
FACILITIES
There are naming right opportunities for the eight indoor and twelve outdoor courts at
the Old Dominion Tennis Complex.
