Card skimming has become one of the financial
industry’s fastest-growing crimes and costs financial
institutions and consumers billions of dollars annually.
Losses caused by skimming go beyond the money
stolen through fraudulent withdrawals. After an
attack, substantial investments are required to reissue
compromised cards. Additionally, financial institutions

known skimming attack vectors, Diebold’s skimmingprotection
packages offer the latest generation of
proven technologies and leverage the most innovative
anti-skimming expertise in the industry. Five levels of
security are available to help guard against the most
sophisticated card-skimming attacks.

ATM SECURITY PROTECTION SUITE
level 1 Protection
Diebold’s skimming-protection solutions start with a
level of protection ideal for ATMs located inside the
branch or in locations where risk is minimal for skimming.
Multi-layered security features are integrated into the
card reader and feature a unique bezel design that can
help deter against skimmer attachment. Lead-through
indicator flashing LEDs can also alert consumers that
a skimming device has been placed on the front of
the card reader. Jitter, with speed control in both card
insertion and return, is also available for motorized card
readers and helps to prevent the capture of magnetic
stripe information. Diebold’s PIN pad shield, along with
surveillance technology helps prevent the capture of the
PIN as well as deterring fradulent behavior at the ATM.
level 2 Protection
For Opteva ® ATMs that require an advanced level of
skimming protection, Diebold offers award-winning
skimming-detection technology that detects a skimmer
and generates an automatic alert that a fraudulent device
has been added to the card-reader bezel. This alert can
be directed either to the branch alarm system or to the
ATM network monitoring system whenever a skimming
attempt is detected. Diebold’s advanced skimming
detector is combined with a highly sophisticated
proprietary detection algorithm that allows the sensor to
discriminate between skimmers, environmental factors
and cardholder activity—dramatically increasing its
reliability while helping to reduce false alarms.
level 3 Protection
Diebold’s skimming-protection solutions offer an
additional level of protection against skimming,
leveraging our self-service security expertise with TMD
Security’s jamming, anti-skimming technology. This new
generation skimming countermeasure is available for
Opteva, multi-vendor and legacy terminals with motorized
card readers and is an ideal solution for terminals located
where there is an elevated risk for skimming. TMD’s
jamming technology emits an electromagnetic field that
interferes with skimmers attempting to capture magnetic
stripe data. The jamming continues to protect the ATM
while transactions continue to be conducted securely for
motorized card readers. The TMD solution for dip card
readers does not permit the card reader and the skimmer
to read the card, so a transaction cannot be started—
taking the terminal out of service until the threat has been
removed, helping to protect cardholder information.
level 4 Protection
For the highest level of skimming protection, detection
technology is combined with the jamming feature.
Available for both motorized and dip readers, a detection
sensor continuously monitors the card-reader environment
and detects fraudulent objects placed over the card
reader. The sensor signals that a foreign object has
been detected and when connected to an alarm panel,
sends an alert to a central station/monitoring center
where appropriate action can be taken. The ATM stays in
service, offering consumers secure transactions. Diebold’s
expertise in self-service security helps to ensure proper
installation and performance of this solution. Integration is
easy for mixed fleets that include legacy and cross-vendor
terminals since there are no software requirements.
level 5 Protection
Pairing the latest technology in skimming protection with
award-winning outsourced monitoring, Diebold offers
ATM SkimmingAlert Monitoring Service—the industry’s
best anti-skimming solution. A monitoring-based solution,
ATM SkimmingAlert provides a real-time line of defense
with customized solutions for your customers’ protection.
Diebold’s solution offers customized response plans
featuring e-mail alerts and text messages from the
Monitoring Center, voice notification and follow-up, as well
as Diebold service technicians to inspect ATM and video
verification to confirm the presence of a skimming device.

In addition to implementing the latest security
technologies, the following best practices will also help in
mitigating skimming fraud:
• Build awareness among consumers, branch personnel
and ATM service teams to help in the detection of
devices added to an ATM fascia. Visual cues such as
tape residue near or on a card reader may indicate the
former presence of a skimming device.
• Alert systems monitor the routine patterns of
withdrawals and notify operators or financial
institutions in the event of suspicious activity.
• Video surveillance and monitoring are effective
methods for deterring or detecting placement of
card skimmers and other fraudulent devices such as
PIN overlays and mini-cameras.
• Implement multiple layers of security to help deter
and detect fraudulent attempts to provide the best
approach to anti-skimming.
