<strong>of</strong>fer programs lasting longer than eight weeks, compared with 35% <strong>of</strong> medium libraries<br />
and 33% <strong>of</strong> large libraries. According to these figures, nearly all children in Pennsylvania<br />
have access to summer reading programs lasting between four and eight weeks.<br />
Program administration. When it comes to running a successful summer reading<br />
program, libraries find they must integrate their own ingenuity with available outside<br />
resources. Our survey found that:<br />
• Most <strong>of</strong>ten, the children’s librarian runs the summer reading program. The survey<br />
showed that in 43% <strong>of</strong> the libraries, the children’s librarian organizes the<br />
program. Another 17% reported that the head librarian runs the program.<br />
• Many libraries depend on outside sources to ensure the success <strong>of</strong> their summer<br />
reading programs. According to the survey, 65% <strong>of</strong> the libraries report that<br />
community agencies assist them with the summer reading program, whereas 30%<br />
reported no such assistance. <strong>Libraries</strong> receive this assistance from a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
sources. For example, community organizations such as the Rotary Club or<br />
Kiwanis Club may donate money, supplies, food, or prizes. Local merchants (e.g.,<br />
bookstores, grocery stores) may <strong>of</strong>fer money, in-kind services, or gift certificates.<br />
McDonalds, Burger King, and Pizza Hut may sponsor programs and workshops<br />
and make monetary donations. Finally, government programs, including Even<br />
Start and Americorps, may lend long-term volunteers.<br />
Many libraries are using the Internet to communicate about their summer reading<br />
programs. At least 47% <strong>of</strong> the libraries responding said they use a web page to<br />
describe the summer reading program; 45% said they do not.<br />
