FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 17, 2013
Scripture Reflection
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SAY THAT CHRIST
DIED FOR OUR SALVATION
It is a doctrine of the Church that Christ died for our sins according
to the Scriptures. Our attempt to try to understand this is
“theology”, in other words, “how does it work”, “what is
happening to Christ and to us and to God”
Scripture uses many metaphors to explain it, like
“sacrifice”, “shedding of blood” “ransom”, and so on. Origen, one
of the prominent early theologians in the Church, said that Christ
paid a ransom to the devil by dying on the cross. St Augustine said
that Christ’s death satisfies the death sentence placed upon us by
our sins. Our sins are “transmitted” from one to another whenever
we are born, and this is what he calls “original sin”. This thinking
prevailed in the western Church for the first thousand years, and
people were constantly reminded of what great sinners they
were. The “bigger” sinners we were, the “more” an infinite God
was displeased
In the middle ages, St. Anselm said it was ridiculous to
think that Christ had to pay a ransom to the devil, who is nothing
but an “out-law” So he developed the theory that sin offended
God’s honor which had to be restored, and only God could restore
it, so Jesus, being God and man, fits in perfectly.(an offence against
an infinite God could only be repaired by one who is also infinite,
that is God.) Once Christ paid the “ debt”, God could shower us
with mercy provided we repent.
St Thomas Aquinas taught that Christ, being divine, could
repair the “damage” done to the honor of an “injured” God.
Duns Scotus taught that God was willing to accept us
sinful people out of His own magnaminity, without any “shedding”
of blood.
Peter Abelard developed the theory that Christ’s life and
death was a path that we could follow and therefore become
“saved”
The Protestant reformers, Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, thought
that Christ took on the punishment of God’s wrath upon our sins.
By breaking God’s law, we had to have justice restored to God and
us. Christ substituted for us and took on the punishment, so that we
could be “declared “ innocent by God. So devotion to the Blood of
Christ grew by leaps and bounds both among Catholics and
Protestants, but in different ways. Mel Gibson’s movie “The
Passion of Christ” is a good example of people focusing on the
“blood of Christ” as He was depicted in the movie, being viciously
beaten by the Romans.
`
We can see the fruit of these different theories by the way
people talk about it. We hear some say “Christ did it all for
me!” “Wash yourself in the blood of the Lamb” “Are you
saved” “When were you saved”
Having grown up with going to the stations of the
Cross with emphasis on the shedding of Christ’s blood and death
on the cross, we probably figure that Christ had to go through all
that in order to make God pleased with us. But such is not the
case. He went through all that to show us how much He and His
Father loved us, even to the point of death and that love conquered
even death itself.
More recently, some theologians have studied it all and
come up with something that seems to match scripture and tradition
in a better way.
God made us good but because of our freedom we chose to
act against God’s plan and so sinned. God was ever ready to help
repair the damage. So after sending the prophets of old He sent His
Son into the midst of human experience. God’s life and love are most
fully revealed in Christ’s life and act of giving Himself on the cross
for us. And He continually offers Himself to us every day, to bring us
into greater communion with Himself, God, and others. So we
shouldn’t ask “When was I saved” but “How is Christ reaching out to
save me each moment of my day”This happens in the events of life
and how I respond. In the choices I make, I decide to accept or reject
Christ, and in this way, I work out my salvation. In this way His death
and resurrection saves me. Through the Church and sacramental life,
Christ unites Himself to us and helps us, energizes us, to follow
Him. Hence for us Catholics, the term which we use most regarding
Christ (follow me) ought to make sense.
So when another Christian asks “are you saved” simply
respond “I’m responding to God’s love as best I can.” “And I trust the
grace of the Holy Spirit at all times!”
Please remember that these are all simply attempts by
believers to try and understand what Christ’s death is all about. Please
note “try” This might be too “heavy” for some, but in the end, Christ
saves us, and all we do is “participate” in His love.
Dear Joan,
I was interested in the comments of Cathy Catholic in the
March 10th Bulletin. I am pretty sure that the idea of flat screen TV's
in a Church the size of St. Joan would be more of a hindrance than
help, but I understand the comments about not being able to see or
understand the happenings on the Altar during Mass. I handle the
training of the Altar Servers and one of the things I do is get all the
items used for the Mass and explain what they are. This includes the
Priest Vestments and even the Candles used for Mass. I was amazed at
the parents response and how much they appreciated the
presentation. As a favor to Sr. Kathy, I spent about an hour with the
RCIA Candidates to give them an idea also. I would be happy to
spend time with any interested parishioners (either some evening in
church or a Saturday) to illustrate what goes on during the Liturgy.
Signed Mr. Mike (Donahue)
Parish Share Assessment: $111,723.00
Anything over and beyond the assessment stays in our parish. Extra
monies would be used this summer, for our treatment of all the
parking lots and to help support the youth group administration, adult
education, and the Life Enrichment program and CCD program. We
are looking for a minimum of a $250 pledge payable over ten
time, the Pastor, Pastoral Council, and Finance Council thank all for
their cooperation!
