From the Pastor’s Desk
A hearty thank you to all of our parishioners and
volunteers and staff who made this such a great
Easter!.....we will remember all of the faithful departed
commemorated in the Easter flower offering…..thanks to
the choir under the direction of Ms. Deana Muro for such
a great rendition of the “Halleluiah” chorus, to the
servers, Mr. Mike, liturgical ministers, ushers, Ms.
Audrey Wurst and youth group volunteers for
conducting youth who, thanks to our people, were able to
package nearly 200 boxes of goodies for our troops as part
of Operation Troop Support, which was conceived by
parishioner Summer Tissue, who also received the local
Citizenship Award for her work….please note the meeting
for the garden project, spring is here (really and finally!)
and soon it will be time to plant…..First Communions will
begin shortly, with groups attending the 10:30 and 12:00
Masses on Sunday, April 21….a hearty thank you to those
who have responded to the Parish Share Program….

Scripture Reflection
A TRIBUTE TO POPE BENEDICT, BY John Carr,
former director of human development for the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops, America magazine,
March 11 2013 p 9
I have been a great part of Catholic Charities in
the United States for years and I was always inspired by
Pope Benedict’s teaching: “Love for widows and
orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind is
as essential to the church as the ministry of the sacraments
and preaching the Gospel”
Though the media focus most of the Church
being against abortion and same-sex marriage, he had
other concerns. He always called for respect for the
poorest and most vulnerable, to avoid military force in
international disputes, care for the environment, and the
danger of a selfish and individualistic mindset which finds
expression in an unregulated financial capitalism.
Regarding Catholics and political life he
wrote: The preservation of freedom calls for the
cultivation of virtue, self-discipline, sacrifice for the
common good and a sense of responsibility towards the
less fortunate. It also demands the courage to engage in
civic life and to bring one’s deepest beliefs and values to
reasoned public debate. He also insisted that charity must
animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and the market
must not become the place where the strong subdue the
weak. It is not the church’s responsibility to make this
teaching prevail in political life. Rather, the church wishes
to help form consciences in political life and to stimulate
greater insight into the authentic requirements of justice as
well as greater readiness to act accordingly, even when
this might involve conflict with situations of personal
interest.
The stories of resurrection I heard at Catholic
Charities left me grateful to be part of a faith community
that does such lifesaving work. I wish I were part of a
political community that sees our church and its retiring
leader through more than issues of human sexuality. We
all need to appreciate that “Love” is at the heart of Pope
Benedict’s leadership and legacy.

for our organization. Your donations enabled the Youth
Group to pack over 200 care packages for the troops!
Your donation means a lot to the troops! At the current
time we are shipping to a lot of men and women from
across the country that are stationed overseas and they are
grateful for your support too. As always it is very hard for
the troops to be away from home and the care packages are
a great way for us to show support and let the troops know
they are not forgotten. I really appreciate you helping us
ensure that the morale of the troops stays positive! Thank
you for your incredible generosity! I look forward to
working with you in the future.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden will sponsor
EXPLORE!, an opportunity for seventh and eighth
grade and high school girls to learn more about the life
of a Sister at St. Joseph Convent in Baden. There are two
choices to attend, one on Sunday, April 21, from 10:00
am - 3:00 pm; the other is Wednesday, April 24, from
9:30 am – 1:30 pm. The day includes Liturgy with the
Sisters, lunch, input, reflection, sharing, and a social.
There is no fee for this event. For more information or to

Registration for next year's religion classes has
begun. This registration is for any student who will
be in Kindergarten through the eighth grade next
year. Registration can be completed by completely
filling in the registration form and returning it with
a check. (These forms may be returned to CCD class or
dropped into the collection basket in an envelope
marked CCD) Forms were sent home with all current
students and should be returned now. Please check your
child’s folder! (Forms are also available at
www.mystjoan.org) If you are an active member of
St. Joan of Arc parish, the materials fee is $45.00 for
the one child or $75.00 for two or more children. If
you are an in-active member or outside the parish,
the fee is $60.00 for one child, or $90.00 for two or
more children. (You are considered an active member
if you come to Mass regularly and contribute to the
church via the envelope system.) Register your child
NOW for CCD, late fees will be added September 1 st .
No special class requests will be honored after May
30th. Kindergarten is optional. Class size is limited,
so sign up early...first come first served. If you have

St Francis of Assisi High School Youth Ministry is
sponsoring a Vendor/Craft Fair to benefit Dove Bright a
20 year woman who is a quadriplegic. The event is on
Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 9am to 3pm in Finley Hall
on our parish property, Route 88, Finleyville. If you are
